Regarding linux & the Playstation 3

edited November 2006 in Everything Else
For the person that wrote in asking about linux on the PS3:
I just wanted to make sure you were aware that sony has an information page about this topic, and it seems they're adding content to it over time. There's some info about what will and not work available here

  • The real killer will be when we get the HowTo on putting PS3 on your Linux box!
  • Did some reading. It looks like everything works except for the video card. Because they don't let you have direct GPU access, you can't do awesome 3D stuff on the PS3 with Linux. At least, you can't do awesome 3D stuff with the help of the GPU. You can try to do it with just the Cell processor if you want to. Either way, this means you can't set the video mode or run X in the usual fashion. Instead, you have to run X on the kernel framebuffer. This is not hard, but it isn't ideal either. You can still get HD resolution, but not easily enough.
