New Computer!!!

edited February 2007 in Technology
Well, I finally upgraded my old computer and my new computer ships on Monday. The specs are:

250 GB Hard drive
2 GB of RAM
AMD Athlon 3200+
Nvidia GeForce 7400 with 256 mb of space
Integrated 7.1 Audio. Thats the most but the one problem is it comes with Vista.

  • So... take Vista off and load it with something else.
  • You didn't build it yourself?

    *shakes head in disappointment*

  • Nvidia GeForce 7400 with 256 mb of space
Space? What is it a coffee table?
  • I'm afraid Vista is currently incompatible with Nvidia cards. You're gonna have to wait a month or two until the service pack comes out. That's why I'm holding off on my laptop purchase.

I did tell what I wanted but technically I didn't build the computer. To tell the truth, I don't have the know-how.

I will probably boot Ubuntu Linux after I get a compatible printer.

I didn't know that. Thanks for the heads up but i guess that's another reason to boot Ubuntu Linux.

Nvidia Ge Force 7400 with 256mb of space

    Well it said

As long as they include the Vista disc, then at least for now. When the service pack comes out, you can reinstall Vista. If you're buying a higher end laptop like this and not just some lightweight from New Egg, then in my opinion you should go back to Vista after all the problems are fixed.

  • That's what I might do. I'm not sure just yet though.... Right now I'm just worried about backing up all of the files on my old computer. There are a lot of them. ;(
  • Just got my new machine:
    >less /proc/cpuinfo
    processor : 0
    model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5650 @ 2.67GHz
    processor : 1
    model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5650 @ 2.67GHz
    ...
    processor : 22
    model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5650 @ 2.67GHz
    processor : 23
    model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5650 @ 2.67GHz

    >less /proc/meminfo
    MemTotal: 24720848 kB

    >sudo hdparm -t /dev/md
    /dev/md3:
    Timing buffered disk reads: 1100 MB in 3.00 seconds = 366.65 MB/sec
It's a little light on the memory side, but it'll do.

Could be a Dell Poweredge too.
  • 24 cores x 24 GB ram huh, time to rip all DVDs, ever.

It's an HP, I saw the machine for about five minutes before it was stowed away in the machine room. I wonder if I could get away with running a Minecraft server on that thing ;-).

Or rip a few DVDs and save them to a RAM disk, just for the hell of it.
