New to Anime - looking for some good stuff

  • Next week, we'll be doing a show on how to get into anime. ^_~
  • Has anyone heard of S-cry-ed? The back of the case at best buy made it sound halfway decent but I'm not sure from that if it's worth the $40 admission price.

I'd agree with Trigun, it's highly entertaining. R.O.D. is also very good. I'm also a fan of the One Piece Fansub...and to those of you that DON'T like One Piece...well...that's just like, your opinion man.

I watched the first episode or two when it was new on fansub a few years ago. I'm pretty sure it's just generic sci-fi shonen fighting.

I have to second the "do not watch Akira" vote.

Having it be the FIRST anime I ever watched... My impression of anime became "WTF."

    General Starting Anime: Cowboy Bebop

    Shoujo type: Ouron Host Club

Political: Ghost in the Shell SaC

    Mix of everything...: Escaflowne

Classic Movies: Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away

    Things to Avoid:
    - Titles based on video games (namely .hack// and Final Fantasy Unlimited)
    - Non-original shows in a series (Tenchi in Tokyo. Gundam SEED Destiny, Tenchi Muyo GXP, Tenchi Muyo: Ryo-Ohki, Nuku Nuku TV). While some are good, use extreme caution with these kinds of anime.
    Another thing to avoid:
-REALLY long series anime. Although some are good, most generally run dry rather fast (Naruto, Inuyasha, Bleach...)
-Pretty much everything done by 4Kids.

    Heres my top 20 list.

    #1. Tenchi Universe.
#2. Tenchi Muyo. The new Muyo Esp. that came in 2003 I think, are only OK so far. I would recommend that you want the old DVD to Muyo. The one's from 1992. To get some the best of Tenchi.
#3. His and Her Circumstances. The manga name is Kare Kano.
#4. Maison Ikkoku. The best love story in anime.
    #5. Blue Seed.
    #6. Ah! My Goddess.
    #7. Outlaw Star.
    #8. Cowboy Bebop.
#9. Hana Yori Dango. Boys over flowers here stateside.
    #10. Hellsing.
    #11. Tenchi in Tokyo.
#12. Please Teacher. Onegai Teacher in Japan.
    #13. Revolutionary Girl Utena.
    #14. Ai Yori Aoshi.
    #15. Princess Nine.
#16. Lupin the 3rd TV or what lupin fans like to say is the Red Jacket series.
    #17. Strawberry Eggs.
#18. Martian Successor: Nadesico. Thank to Giant robot week on CN or may have miss watching this one.
#19. Kimagure Orange Road. This one would have been in my top five if they would dub it in eng and not just have eng subtitles.
    #20. Diamond Daydreams.
GOd, this list is...I don't even know what to say to this one...Jesus some of those are terrible.... TERRIBLE. Allow me to hit em one by one.

To save myself some time here....anything Tenchi is awful. It was a staple back in the day when it was all we could get, but the entire thing has always been bad. It's JUST A HAREM SHOW. Not even a particularly touching or funny one. So I'd avoid #2 and #11 as well. I can't emphasise this enough....Tenchi was never good.

Mason Ikkoku is mediocre. You have to like Rumiko Takashi's style of drawing out a plot way longer than is necessary, often with unsatisfying results. This show did not pass my one-episode test.

His & Hers Circumstances starts out strong, but gets weak after the first 4 episodes. I never finished this series, which is a shame because it looked like it was going to go somewhere.

Blue Seed is decent, but not GREAT. Again, this anime has some things in it that might turn off someone new to the genre, like Momiji's problem keeping her panties from becoming exposed. It's sort of a funny running gag, but can prove embarrassing if you're not expecting it.

Ah! My Goddess! is an old standby. This is an example of the harem-show genre that actually goes somewhere great. The manga is actually quite good if you ever get around to reading it.

Outlaw Star is a decent action show, but I was unhappy with how it ended. While most of the show is quite good, this suffers from the "Now that we need to wrap the show up, we're going to do something inexplicable and weird to try and come off as really deep" syndrome.

    Cowboy Bebop, yes, god yes.

Hana Yori Dango is an older show, and drags on a bit near the end, but I enjoyed it. If you like highschool romance type shows, this is a decent choice.

Hellsing: Fun, violent, action packed. A good choice.

Onegai Teacher: Are you out of your fucking mind?! Why are you recommending shows that are one step from porn?! Gawd.

Utenna: Heh, this is a great one. It can get kind of deep seeing as the whole show is a metaphor, but has some great moments.

Ai Yori Aioshi: Again, why are you recommending a show that basically de-porns itself to try and be a normal show? Just another bad harem show, don't bother with this one.

Princess Nine: This is sort of the basic 'team' or 'sports' anime that you see a lot of. Not an amazing show, but I watched it. The characters are a bit cliche, but then again, if you've never seen a show like it, it's new to you.

Lupin the 3rd: With the exception of a couple of bad movies, this show and most of the series/movies/ovas that surround it are great.

Strawberry Eggs: Okay, what? This show was barely funny. Guy dresses up as woman to teach at all-girls school and then he's up to his eyeballs in nubile teenage lesbians who all want him/her. This show was stupid.

Orange Road was another one of those 'okay' love stories. It's decent, but ends up not going anywhere in the end. There's no resolution.

Diamond Daydreams is actually one I have never seen or heard much about although I know of it.

Also, while Ouran is hai-larious, there may be some anime 'in jokes' that a newer fan may not get. The twins and their farcical boy-love thing that they do, for instance.

  • Whoa, pwned.
  • I am with you ArtBoy most of those series sucked.
  • I guess the key question here would be what kind of show are you looking for? I can name many a good anime but they are good for different reasons and so, I inquire as to what sort of anime you like or what kind of entertainment medium you generally enjoy.
  • Alright - after a long while I downloaded all of Eva. I'm done up until "Purest Heart for You" - I watched the original finale and was awe-struck in multiple fashions. I REALLY hope there's an afterthoughts episode so I can see if I have the slightest idea as to what happened. I finished "Air" which was so much different than the rest of Evangelion... Almost can't wait to see how it ends. Sadly I acquired the English dub having watched 26 subbed episodes. Quite bizarre in English. Trigun is on the go right now, went back and listened to that show in prep actually... I purchased, on a total whim, six DVD's of Fullmetal Alchemist. 24 Episodes of what I hope is something decent... I watched the first couple and I don't mind the dub at all so that's a bonus... I think I'll marathon what I have of FMA (Which I found out I only have half of now... Ugh) tomorrow and then Bebop all week.

    Woo.

    Cool. Thanks again everyone.
  • I don't think the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a good anime for an anime beginner. It's definitely a show that requires you to have seen a good amount of other animes before-hand, simply because a lot of the jokes and visual gags are making fun of other animes (not directly, but definitely making fun of certain cliches.)
  • You may like or not like my list of animes that I love. At least I put my list up and let it speak for it's self. Unlike some people I know on this message board.

I'd agree. It's like Sgt. Frog in that regard. It's an anime for anime fans.
  • Trigun is a given by now. Also Naussica is a good anime along with Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Cutey Honey, Ruroni Kenshin, Voices of a Distant Star, Galaxy Express 999 and anything within the Matel Galaxy Express universe, and yes Ghost in the Shell. But...

    /evil grin.

Even though it is a shitty anime once you get a bit more into it OOODDDIIINNN. That is if you don't fall asleep first while attempting to watch it.
  • Anime Movies:

    Bebop movie
    Tokyo Godfathers
    Steamboy
    Laputa (miyazaki)
    Nausica (miyazaki)

For some Wierd and crazies and some dark anime:

    Ergo Proxy
    Mousou Dairinin
Animatrix (though one of them is chinese cartoon)

    and Cowboy Bebop. given
  • Alright, I know I'm reviving a dead thread, but whatever!

I've got quite a bit of money to spend, and I want to buy some anime. I've made some choices, and I've decided to buy the box sets of Cowboy Bebop, Azumanga Daioh, Escaflowne, and some other anime merchandise (some PVC figures, etc.). I've done a bit of research, and I want to make sure that these are the right sets, and that the website is reputable. Any experience with it? Here are the links for the boxed sets:

    Escaflowne Boxed Set
    Cowboy Bebop Boxed Set
    Azumanga Daioh Boxed Set

I'm also thinking about getting Eva, but I'm not sure whether to get the Platinum set or the Perfect collection. The website has a lot of things ridiculously cheap, but I'm still not sure if it's reputable.

    That is okay and encouraged.

Well, their prices are ok looking, but they seem to be out of stock. Also, some of the stuff looks bootleg, and some doesn't. If I were you, I would buy them all from Deep Discount DVD. Their prices on these items are better than Amazon's, and they have everything you are looking for.
  • Ah, I forgot to look. Oh well, they still have the figures and Azumanga Daioh, so all is not lost! I'll also take a look at the site you linked to.
  • Onegai Teacher: Are you out of your fucking mind?! Why are you recommending shows that are one step from porn?! Gawd.
Are you out of your mind? Have you even seen Please Teacher? If you have, you would know that it is far from hentai. Ikki Tousen way is closer to hentai than Please Teacher was. Please Teacher barely had any fanservice at all, and actually got somewhat metaphysical and Eva-ish towards the end. The Please Teacher OAV, maybe, although it only had just a little bit more fanservice. In fact though, I thought that I needed the OAV after the end because anything Eva-ish or metaphysical (most of the time) makes me extremely fucking depressed. The OAV helped to cheer up the mood, and really was needed in my opinion for the series to end on a lighter note.

Again, please watch a series before you label it as 'one step away from porn/hentai'. You'll miss out on a lot of shows that way. Ai Yori Aoshi was also not close to being hentai, although it was a harem show and had a lot of fanservice, it was a better show that you probably realize.

But what I saw of it, it had a LOT of fanservice. A LOT.

Yeah, it did have a whole lot of fanservice, but it had plot, too, at least later on in the series. Of course, Scrym and many other people on the forums are anti-romantic comedies and anything with a tinge of fanservice in them, so they would tend to disagree with a lot of my opinions on anime.

I enjoyed Tenchi Muyo quite a bit. There's nothing wrong with either romantic comedy or fanservice. But, from what I saw of Onegai Teacher, I'm of the opinion that it's pablum plain and simple.

I also enjoy Tenchi Muyo; I'm watching it right now. No offense of course (although I don't believe it was implied ^_^), I just got that jist over listening to the show and posting in the forums for the past couple of years. Maybe watching Please Teacher wouldn't do, but reading a episode list on Wikipedia or a full synopsis might explain some of the later plot in it.

Yeah, the manga's like that - hell, in the manga he becomes a teacher to hook up with schoolgirls(Though, he never succeeds and this changes over time), but it's far more subdued in the anime - he's still a bit of a peeping tom, but he's far less about just shagging the shit out of schoolgirls.
