How to identify a bad anime, just by looking at the box.

edited May 2007 in Anime
If the box includes any of the following:

- The tittle includes the name of any fruit.
- The tittle includes the name of any dairy product.
- The tittle includes the word 'melty'.
- There are tentacles anywhere on the box doing anything to anybody. The only way this could be untrue would be if there was some awesome anime in which every character and creature was a squid or octopus and they never touched eachother.
- It has maids anywhere on it with the only possible exception being "Emma".
- It says 'Tenchi' anywhere on it, even if it has nothing to do with the actual Tenchi universe. The name is tainted.
- Any female character anywhere on the box is dressed in what can amount to only goggles and an eye-patch (not on their face, stupid), or less.
- It has to do with Gundam (with few, very rare exceptions, like 'War in the Pocket')
- It has the logo of Fox4Kids, Bandai TV, or JetX.
- It has the word 'Geist' anywhere on it.
- It has more than 78 episodes. (I get this number from Slayers. Most shows jump a shark or just drag on after 3 seasons, with few exceptions.)
- One of the episodes has the word 'hot springs!' in it anywhere. (This includes, but is not limited to 'Let's go to the hot springs!', 'Hot springs panic!', or 'We couldn't think of any other way to fit fan-service into the show other than needlessly sending the characters to hot springs!'. Just go buy porn of you want to see naked anime characters that badly.)

Anyone care to add or find exception?

  • Anything where the girls on the cover are wearing tops so tight you can see their nipples

What? That means it will be a good anime!
  • Also, I object to Gundam and Tenchi being labels of bad anime. The earlier things from these series were quite good. With exceptions(like G Gundam) I think you have to set the good/bad cutoff date around 2000 or so

    Good Tenchi:
    The original OAVs
    Tenchi Muyo in Love

    Marginal Tenchi:
    Manatsu no Eve
    The first TV series

    Garbage:
    Everything else

    Beyond Garbage:
    Tenchi Muyo GXP

If you are talking about personal opinion, then I don't mind putting Tenchi on the list. I really don't like the harem genre, so Tenchi doesn't do it for me. If you are talking about quality in general, then I can't say that anything Tenchi is automatically bad. Sure, there are quite a few Tenchi movies, TVs, and OAVs out there, and some of them are terrible. Despite that, the original Tenchi pioneered the modern harem genre. While I may not enjoy it, it is definitely way better than many later examples from the genre, and it was revolutionary in many aspects. It was also a significant show in terms of introducing anime to the US audience.

I do strongly object to the Gundam label automatically meaning a bad anime. Sure, there are bad Gundams out there. There are quite a few actually. And by no means is something with the Gundam label on it guaranteed to be good. However, there are numerous excellent Gundam properties, especially in the anime. Most of the big Gundam series are excellent. The original Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, and the original Gundam Seed are quite awesome science fiction epics. War in the Pocket, 8th MS Team, and Char's Counterattack are also well worth watching. There are probably more bad Gundams than good, and G Gundam is outright horrendous. Still, saying that anything with Gundam on it is automatically bad couldn't be further from the truth.

If you disagree and think that all Gundam does suck, then answer this question. What Gundam have you seen? If you haven't at least seen one of the three major TV series, then you can't talk.

I admit it's been a while, but I do recall enjoying Pretty Sammi(the OAV) as an enjoyably silly little parody of magical girl shows, so I'll defend that, too.
  • You have to take tentacles off the list because of the Slayers movie with the Octopi. Also, Detective Conan has well over 78 episodes. So does Galaxy Express 999.

Come to think of it, Dragonball and of course DBZ are longer than 78 episodes. Dragonball is definitely quality. Dragonball Z, say what you like about it, is not that awful in the grand scheme of things. It is what it is, the shining flag bearer of the shonen fighting anime, but it is NOT that bad.

    Yeah, it is that bad.

Fist of the North Star, or even One Piece, is a much better fighting show.
  • I haven't seen One Piece, the anime, but the manga looked like it was very similar to DBZ with a bit more silliness. I wouldn't call it much better.
  • Many (emphasis: MANY) harem shows are thinly veiled softcore porn.

Which leads me to: If you see one guy surrounded by a mass of assorted attractive rainbow-haired large-bosomed girls/one girl surrounded by assorted rainbow-haired exceptionally bishounen dudes.... probably not an awesome anime.

    ... unless it is Ouran.

Why bother with that? Just grab the box with naked chicks and get over it.

Hey, have you watched that yet? You still have all my VCDs. XD
  • The tittle... The tittle...The tittle
Uh, do you mean "title"? Is there some weird alternate spelling I'm not aware of?

Mmhmm I like me some tittles
  • Any art box that has a little girl cosplaying as a cat or vampire
Any art box that has a girl under the age of 18 that looks that is longing for some one (Koi Kaze)
Any anime that does not have a giant robot, or a spaceship, or a crazy cast of characters on the background.
Any anime that is not based on a manga from Naoki Urasawa
Every anime that is made by Ken Akumatsu

Also G GUNDAM IS AWESOME, and if you do not believe then ask Dary Surat, Dave and Joel and many people from the frontbeat forums, except Gerald cuz he hates it with passion, the same passion that Domon uses to create his burning finger :P

  • I might be able to like G Gundam better if they didn't so blatantly recycle the same frames of animation every show for him starting up his Gundam
  • Hey, the best way to call a Gundam is by using the fingers in a very manly way. I would have chosen whistling at the Gundam but using the fingers is also cool :P
  • ... unless it is Ouran.

You really need to do an update on that anime. I'm really want to know what you think of Ouran High School Host Club.
  • Ouran is cool and the coolest part is that there is very little romantic connotations on that anime, is more about the strength of friendship.
  • How do I know if an anime is bad just by looking at the cover?
Step 1.  Does it say "Akira" on the cover? If yes, continue to step 2.
    Step 2. Put it back.
Also, I remember back in the days when I would rent EVERYTHING  Blockbuster got in.  Those days ended after I rented "Earthian."

As does Slayers the series, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Also Kodomo no Omocha (195 eps) which is another series I really liked.

  • Wait, are you saying that Akamatsu's anime are bad? That man is bad and his writing is bad.  Love Hina was drivel.  Utter drivel.  If you want to watch a harem show, at least watch Tenchi instead.
God...  I could do an entire show on how bad Love Hina is.

Sweet Jesus, Earthian. I accidentally rented that one when I was 12 or 13 or so. What a horrible mistake... the gay-angel sex scene in that last episode kind of ruined my childhood.
