Games for the PSP

edited May 2007 in Video Games
Due to an interesting turn of events I may soon be getting a PSP. What games should I look into getting for this device?

  • What games? There are no games!

Anyway, to be serious, there really aren't that many good PSP games to look out for. The only ones that are notable are Portable Ops and maybe Puzzle Quest. The rest are generally shite. My PSP is collecting dust, and that's even AFTER I hacked it for homebrew/ISO capabilities.
  • PSP doesn't have too many new games worth getting other than the Puzzle Quest and Lumines. I would go for the compilations or remakes of old games like the Taito Legends, the Mega Man game, the Sonic collection, etc. Sony was smart enough to realize hey, people are just playing old games on our system. Let's just sell those old games and maybe people will buy them.
  • I'll second that about Metalgear Solid: Portable Ops and Puzzle Quest, and I'll add a recommendation for Test Drive Unlimited and Exit. I was really surprised how well TDU translated from teh Xbix 360 to the PSP, and Exit is a really innovative environment-based action puzzle game about rescuing people from natural disasters, and has some of the most unique graphics ever. Loco Roco is fairly addictive as well. The U.S. release of Armored Core Formula Front is pretty entertaining as well.
  • Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is your best bet at this moment in time.
  • Things are slim, but they're not as dire as one might expect. Lumines, Ridge Racer and Wipeout Pure are still awesome, and Mega Man Powered Up is pretty boss from what I hear. Crush is also supposed to be pretty amazing, as is Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles, but expect to wait a while to see that one. Daxter, Ratchet and Clank Size Matters and Metal Gear Portable Ops are all supposed to be good, but suffer slightly from the PSPs controls. If you don't have Advance Wars, I hear Field Commander is good.

If you start moving into the realm of ports and things that are also on (or going to be on) other platforms, there are a few more options. Puzzle Quest, Exit and Every Extend Extra are all solid, and Burnout Dominator is also supposed to be decent. The abovementioned compilations like the Gradius one are also supposed to be pretty good.

The PSP don't got much, but there are a few gems. I'm also thinking of picking one up again (I had one last year but sold it to get a DS, which I don't regret in the slightest) but I'm waiting for just a few more titles (which hopefully will be forthcoming).
  • Is there a way to watch my anime torrents on this thing?

Make a web page that shows the status of your torrents. Visit the web page with the PSP browser.

Can I easily copy the xvid (HD) files onto the PSP and watch them on the go?

I have some software to convert the files to ipod format but the scaling kills the subtitles.

According to the Wikipedia "As of firmware update version 3.30, MPEG-4/H.264 AVC Main Profile (AVC CABAC) video files of the following sizes can be played: 720 X 480, 352 X 480, or 480 X 272." Either download fansubs that are already in one of those formats, or transcode to get existing videos into one of those formats. Many video transcoding programs have an option for PSP. Just copy the resulting files onto a memory stick, and you're good to go. The only problem is that transcoding video takes a hella long time, and it can sometimes be tricky to maintain high video quality when compressing.
  • Do a search for PSP Video 9.
  • PSP Video 9 is what I use as well. I also use their iPod video converter. Videora is the name of the company that makes those programs.
  • Looks like I am not getting a PSP after all...

To make a long story short:

Due to my blog gaining a lot of traffic and moving up in the world of blogs that cover video games I was approached by a company that wanted to send me some free review pre-release games for the PSP. They were not willing to send me a free PSP though. So, unless I can get one on the cheap I will have to pass on this opportunity to get free PSP games.
  • Well... I managed to acquire a PSP for next to nothing. A used PSP that is.

The first thing I notice is that the USB plug on this thing is non-standard!!! Looks like I'm going to have to setup some sort of local webserver to transfer video to this thing.

I also got my game to review, it's a date sim.
  • I am staring at my PSP right now.

What crazy-ass USB plugs are -you- using?
  • Yeah, I agree. That there would be a USB mini-B plug wouldn't it? The EXACT same plug that most digital cameras the I have ever seen use. Hell, when i got my PSP, I already had four of those cables just laying around. It's also the exact same plug that Motorola Razrs use for both charging and for data transfer, and my phone uses it as well. THAT plug is far from non-standard or proprietary.
  • Well, nothing I have uses it. I have the fat ones with the two cut corners and the small square ones. I just do not have this one. I thought I might have had one but I can't find one in my house...

It's standard on pretty much every small device that uses USB. You must just not be a gadget person.

I bought my digital camera 5+ years ago. It has a proprietary cable.
I also have an iPod and iPod shuffle both use proprietary cables.
I have an old iRock player, it uses the small square USB connector.
Otherwise all I have is USB printers.

So no, I'm not much of a gadget guy. I do have an SD card reader but it also uses the "Fat" USB connector that my printers use.

Can I get one of these for cheap or will I be stuck buying some gold-plated monstrosity for $25? What about an adapter for cheap?
  • The cable I use came with my Sony digital camera I purchased 3-4 years ago. Try ebay.
  • Hell, I'd go as far as saying that I wish EVERYTHING used that plug, MANDATORY. The simple fact that my PSP doesn't use that port for both data transfer AND charging is my biggest complaint about the thing. If Apple ever went to that plug for the iPod or iPhone, I would immediately go out and upgrade to that model, while shitting myself in pure joy!
  • Now that I think of it, my PS3 came with one of those as well...it's what you use to charge the controller.
  • Aww, come on Apreche :)

I love my PSP. Syphon Filter Dark Mirror is a REALLY AWESOME shooter, Sid Meier's Pirates is a really great pirate Sim, Killzone, Ratchet and Clank, Field Commander, Jeanne D'Arc is coming... Lots is coming :|

    Of course, Lumines. :)
  • I'm concidering picking up the Pirates game. How does it compare to the old DOS-style Pirates game? Obviously I'm talking Game-Play not graphics.
  • Well, If you're into RPG's there's a new one coming soon, Dragoneer's Aria, which is looking pretty promising.
  • For older RPG's, I feel it necessary to plug Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth.
I found the story to be solid, with a slight twist on the "Saving the world" scenario.
  • Now, when it comes to rpg's, the PSP isn't hurting for games. Astonisha Story(I think it is), that PO
oPoLaCrois (or whatever) game is supposed to be really good, and the Y's game, just to name a few, are easy to find. And, again, if you like racing games, I can't reccomend Test Drive Unlimited enough.
  • Importing seems to be the way to go for PSP software, particularly if you're a fan of Bemani action. "DJ Max Portable 2", just released a few months back, is a great example of this and has an English option. If you can read Japanese, you're even better off. As far as I'm concerned, nothing beats the fun of "Tokimeki Memorial - Forever with You".
  • I'm finding this Date-Sim game to be something of a "guilty pleasure". I did not think I would like it but it is mildly addictive. It's also the sort of game you would not want to tell your friends that you are playing because you just know they would tease the hell out of you!
  • I can't wait for the upcoming Rondo of Blood remake. But I don't think that's coming out until November or around there.

Dating simulation games are awesome as long as they aren't pornographic. Of course, most of them are. The Tokimeki Memorial series is pretty much the only ones worth playing. They work best when played in a group.
