MW

edited November 2007 in Manga/Comics
Anyone else get their copy today? I got my hardcover (20 bucks!!!!!!) in the mail with the rest of Oldboy! :D I can't wait this is going to be a lonesome geekend.

I read the first chapter of MW and it covered a lot of interesting ground. It looks to be very interesting so far - more to come! :D

  • I'm hoping it's some kind of MechWarrior game.
  • Yeah, I got mine in the comic box on Tuesday. It is indeed hardcover. I'll be reading it soonish.
  • Ok, here is the thing. I have to study for some exams that are at the end of the month. I know this is gonna be good but is it good enough to take time from my study time?

Read it during your study breaks.
  • It's huge. It's like 600 pages or something ridiculously awesome like that. The characters are all incredibly compelling, and the one guy (Yuki?) is... he's pretty fucking weird. This story is awesome, but "This is fucked" kept popping in to my head. So far so good at chapter 8.

MW moneys on it standing for "Million Women", some kind of Ãœber harem manga.

  • I'm sure it's not that. XD
  • It's explained on like page 10.

Why is no one saying what this is? -__-

  • I just finished it. The climax had me literally stop afterwards, because the realization of "Oh, fuck... no way! It couldn't be... OH SNAP!" hit me hard and fast. This is a fucked up book - it deals with a lot of issues, such as homosexuality and similarly to Appolo's Song (which I've not yet read), it deals a lot with love, love and how it blinds people... It makes you trust someone you might not fully understand, or if you do, maybe you love them so much you don't try to help them with their problems because they would change or fall out of love with you.

Very gripping throughout for me, I'll be re-reading it for sure.

MW is a weapon. Leave it at that for now. Read it.

Mitchy D, you are thick. They were asking what MW was, not what "the" MW was.

    It's a Tezuka manga.

I was under the impression we knew it was a manga... Because he said it was a manga. Apreche also said it came in his comic box... and that it was a hardcover.

    Either way, meh.=D

  • So, I have not buy it yet, however a friend showed me the drawing on the back cover, and it scared the heck out of me. So how many of the scenes are on the book. "Not that there is nothing wrong with that " ( Oh Seinfield, how I love you? , but that kind of things are not my cup of tea.
  • I read all of Mw. It is awesome and hardcore.

Hardcore pretty much sums it up. Damn, I want to read it again.

If homosexuality scares you bud, stay away. Very. Far. Away.

It is not that scares me is that I cannot stand extremely graphic scene. I mean Ode to Kirhito had some pretty strong scenes but they were not very graphic.
  • Nothing graphic. There's lots of waist-up-nakedness but nothing I'd worry about. It's not like dudes have their weiners floppin' around everywhere.
  • Ok, them I will check it out :D
  • Just read MW today, and gotdamn is that crazy hardcore. I think I may actually be a little disturbed by the whole book, its really rather bleak.

I do have to say that I did see the twist coming at the end during the climax, but it doesn't mean it still wasn't a good twist.
  • This manga should be a mini series.

It is a very interesting, disturbing read. Its not what is actually shown, there is no super gore or pornographic sex, but some of the violence and the killings that happen have such a psychopathic coldness to them that it makes this manga truly upsetting. Tezuka, you are one versatile mofo, that's for sure.

  • I just finished reading it. It was a pretty good read and I very much agree with Emily here. However, I do have a few complaints.
One is Tezuka's BS in his reluctance to specify certain things, such as dates or places. The "Prefecture S, 196X, R Air Base, Nation X" kind of stuff just annoys me to no end. There is simply no purpose to it.
Secondly, the pacing is a bit weird, but that could be a problem with the translation and the rewrites due to it being published flipped.

Also, the twist at the very end [Spoiler: When the surviving brother in fact turns out to be Michio] was telegraphed to no end.
  • The "Prefecture S, 196X, R Air Base, Nation X" kind of stuff just annoys me to no end. There is simply no purpose to it.
    Timelessness.
  • Spoiler:
Or was it? I think the best part of this is that you really don't know if it was one way or the other.

    Timelessness.
How is "196X" timeless? And how is putting something in a context anything bad?

Crowbaring these attempts at "timelessness" into it is simply completely unnecessary, especially considering the direct mention Tezuka makes of the Vietnam war.
