Outside of the actual formats used to save files (docs, etc...), what features or capabilities does Microsoft Word have, which you need, that are not available in alternative word processing programs?
    Absolutely none.
I use notepad for generic stuff that I need to keep on the computer. I use Google Docs for schoolwork.

  • I also use mostly Google Docs. If I want to write/ edit some HTML I usually use gEdit, since it highlights all the different tags.
  • It's aesthetically nicer than any open source word processors I've seen.
  • In writing class, we do "workshops" for homework where we read different people's work and use Microsoft Word to add comments. I use NeoOffice, but I just go on a public computer for that.
  • Word's auto-summarize feature is surprisingly helpful in skimming large documents quickly.
