Computer Names '08

edited October 2008 in Technology
Nineless started this thread about a year ago and I just wanted to get an update on what computers on peoples' networks are called as well as what you name your gadgets, if you do.

Currently on my network:
1) PanzaPanda (My laptop)
2) Herbert (My Dad's desktop)
3)Olgra (Sister's PC, not active since she left)
4)Totoro (Server and wireless router for "Totoronet".)

    Famfam - Family desktop
Goliath - The media server (my old main rig; a PIII 550MHz Compaq DeskPro EN. Weight: 33lbs [hence the name])
    Nexus - The router
Jenga - My (unstable) dev/sandbox server for web applications
  • I can't wait to see Thead/Thaed's entry.
  • Ah geez...lessee if I can remember 'em all.

    iBook: Thelesis
    iPod Classic: Kylie
Desktop PC: Bitch (until further notice or a new name is appropriate)
iPhone: Phone (newish, hasn't told me its name yet)
    Powerbook: Jone (broken-ish)
    iPod Mini: Galatea (broken-ish)

...I'm not as much of an Apple whore as it looks like. Really. The Mini and the iPhone were both free.

Also, it strikes me as odd that my DS Lite never seemed to want a name.

It does not require you to tell it its name. It'll respond to anything.

My comp is now called Zearth. Why, because it's a big, black box with a single light in the front. And a blinking red one... but I can tape that up if I want to. He's been through a lot for Nine standards. And my iPod nano is still called HINA ICHIGO. I don't remember if the all-caps was on purpose, or just a limitation of the software used to name it.

EDIT: Oh, forgot, my partitions are still called/mounted at: Gienah, Marfak, Segin and Talitha. All 100Gigs large and filled for 93%, 85%, 77% and 61% respectively.

    DS Lite: Rorschach
    Wii: AWESOM-O

  • I named my three PCs after the hosts of Anime World Order. I suppose this trend started since I named the first one while listening to the podcast.
  • I don't name my electronic devices. Is that odd?
  • I've given tentative names from the Culture Minds to all the devices on a network I'm planning.

MacBook: Captain Aardvark Fireball (or just "The Captain" for short).
iPod: Admiral Wolverine Lighteningbolt IV (because it is my fourth iPod).
    PSP: Major Echidna Tornado.
    DS: Commodore Geoduck Hurricane III
    Wii: Lieutenant Armadillo Earthquake

When I set up the Captain to be a wireless router, the server's name is "Belouve". 10 points to whoever can guess what the password for it would be!

    Not even for networking purposes?

Lol! I've been avoiding this thread. :-)

It's ok. We don't mind if you need to use a second post for all of your computers.

I didn't really name the 360, PS3 or Wii other than with the gaming handles.

When the Nehelem Mac Pros come out, I'm going to buy one. I also want to build a Skulltrail box but we'll see.

No, there is Kate's Laptop and Kate's iPod, etc. My husband named his desktop "Precious". To me, naming my computer is like naming my hammer or screwdriver.

Without a name, how do you connect to it over the network? ;^)

If I'm on a network, I call it TheWhaleShark.

    Fear my creativity.

EDIT: My disks are named Exdeath and Behemoth. Exdeath is a 7 year old Western Digital drive; Behemoth is my far newer 500 gig Western Digital drive.

Darn, I need more computers. And yeah, I counted the laser printers. They are technically networked computers, just very specialized ones.
Thaed, with all those servers, why don't you make a computing cluster out of them? Maybe start some SETI@home action? And if your linux box stops working, do you say "oh no, I just died." ?
