Boston in June (now also going to MoCCA NYC on the 6th)

edited February 2009 in Everything Else
So, I'll be in Boston for SUSY09 at Northeastern University between 5-10 June. Apart from the obvious "where is the best gaming store / arcade / bar?" question, I want ask whether anyone here knows about reasonably priced (<$100/night/person) hotels close to campus. Also what is the public transportation like in Boston?

Of course, the floor is open for suggestion as to what to go see and experience while in / around Boston. I do know that the MoCCA art festival is on the 6th and 7th, so any good info on how to get to NYC cheaply and conveniently is appreciated.

    You take the T.

You take the cheap-ass China Town bus. It's slow, and breaks down all the time, but it gets you there cheap. If you want to make the trip reliably and quickly, you can pay big money to take the Amtrak Accella train.

The China Town buses are not that bad time wise, and normal Amtrak fare for a round trip is less than a hundred bucks, which is still almost bearable. Regardless, I would be spending eight hours in transit, which is a much higher cost and not so bearable.

Anyone in the forum have access to a Gulfstream?
  • A flight on Jet Blue from BOS to JFK is about $65 not including the extra taxes and such. It's also incredibly fast. However, a lot of that fastness is lost because of the time it takes you to get to the airport, go through security, wait in the terminal, etc. Also, I don't know how difficult it is for foreigners to take domestic flights without getting held up. If you can manage all those issues, it will probably be a lot faster than Amtrak for a similar price.

Dude, Obama is prez now, I thought all that shit is behind us!

Just kidding, I have actually not had any trouble on US domestic flights. However flying will not save any time when going from downtown to downtown, and the cost would be close to double that of Amtrak. What I may try, is talk to people when I arrive, and find and persuade one of the local geeks to take a road trip to NYC :-) (It worked in L.A. with going to Vegas).

That's not a bad idea. I know a person or two in Boston. I will talk to them.
  • I live in Boston. Take one of the dozen buses to New York. Takes four hours. Many pick-ups and drop-offs. One way = $15, usually. On BoltBus or similar buses, if you reserve far enough in advance, you pay $1.

Do Americans pay money for anything? Oh wait, yes, church donations and lots and lots of food.

Soooo Alex, you wanna go to the MoCCA Art Festival? ;-)

Anyway, thanks for the bus tip. Any idea for good geeky destinations in Boston?

Actually, yes, I would totally be up for that! MIT is certainly a geeky destination, but you won't find much unless you're a college student and either 1) go to MIT, or 2) hack your way into MIT events (pretty easy).

Unfortunately, there are only a moderate number of comic book & anime shops. On top of that, we no longer have an arcade in the Greater Boston area (the last one, TGA, just closed down)! Anime Boston's happening at the end of May, though.

Science Museum is fun, but geared toward kids.

The Boston tech scene is slowly picking up though, so you can easily find a lot of stops to hit up, if you're into that.
  • Comicopia is a good comic shop in Boston.
  • So, just to give one more shout out to anyone who might be interested in trekking from Boston to NYC for MoCCA, It looks like, barring any natural catastrophe, I'll be going on Saturday (June 6th).

If anyone knows about people going that have a spare seat and need for gas money, let me know. Otherwise I'll take the bus (~$30 return ticket), and will appreciate any company on whom I can practice the talk that I have to give on Sunday.

If anyone here lives in Boston and is interested in physics, there will be a public lecture by Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek:
Public Lecture: Professor Frank Wilczek, Nobel Laureate.
    6:30 PM, June 7.
    Tea at 6 PM.
    Curry Center Ballroom, Northeastern University.

And for those who can't make it, the talk (or something very much like the talk he's probably going to give) is up on the tubes (here part 1/8)

  • Awesome, I will more than likely be there.
  • Comicopia is a good comic shop in Boston.
Actually, despite their awesome AB booth, a good portion of their actual store, last I as there, was creepy porn comics. New England Comics (there's one in Quincy, and one in Coolidge Corner in Brookline) is a much better store.

Thanks! Coolidge corner is here right?

Edit: Btw, if your forum name is potentially highly unmanly in a foreign language (lets say hypothetically in Finnish), would you like to know?

Aye, that's it. It's a nice little place to hang out. Check out the Booksmith, too. It's a nice little independent bookstore with a used book section downstairs.

Awesome, I'll try to check it out.

Also: F**K!!!! just before going to bed I realized I can finally watch Hulu... I guess it is possible to cure jet lag by skipping one night alltogether (read internal clock is already at 4AM).

Damn, I'll attend the Laser Event at NYC Resistor on Saturday and the MoCCA festival on Sunday. I'd really like to attend this festival as well, but I guess it wont happen.

I think this is like the most awesome weekend of the year. I don't know why all these events are clustered together. I'm googling that laser event.
  • So where in Bostin can I get my hands on some cheap SD memory cards?

When you come to NY, I'm sure there's a cheap place in China Town.

I bet! However, the opportunity cost of buying the memory in NY is waaaay too high. Unless there is a place right around the corner of the MoCCA festival, or on the way from 55-59 Chrystie Street / Hester Street (where my bus drops me off) I'll rather do other stuff in when over there.
