age of empires

edited July 2006 in Video Games
Age of empires is one of my favorite games so yeah it's like warcraft (Not world of warcraft.) but it's more realistic and fun.
The main object of the game is to surpass different civilizations or conquer them(it all depends on the map). There's also that you must have plenty of wood stone gold and food to make you civilization.

  • My brother just got the third one yesterday... and he's seven. I think he's more of a geek than I am at times. Even my dad plays it.
  • I think that although the first two Age of Empires were great games, Rise of Nations is a far superior RTS of similar subject matter. The only thing that RoN lacks are walls.

Yeah but the only lacking thing age of empires has making bridges, and more ages.

    I need to try it.

  • Yeah it is. I played it a couple of times and yeah it's very much like those warcraft games. Maybe I should play it some more.
  • All of the AoE games rock. III is probably the weakest. Part of the problem is that you need a killer rig to play it. Don't forget Starcraft. People are still playing that!
  • good ol' starcraft.
  • Age of Empires is certainly one of the most addictive games ever in the history of the world. Right now my Father is probably sat in front of it, and he's been there since the first one came out. It wouldn't surprise me if the ammount of time I've spent playing that game over my life is about as long as I've spent eating.

One of the best thing about it was that it was also a game engine, so there were loads of games like it, but with different themes. Remember Star Wars Galactic Battleground? Just like AoE only it had X-Wings!

    Brilliant.
  • While Age of Empires and Rise of Nations both aren't bad, as RTS games neither holds a candle to what remains the pinnacle of that genre: Total Annihilation.

  • AOE : The Conquers was a fantastic game, and still my favourite in the series.

AOE3 is OK, the navel battles were greatly improved over 2. Another cool thing is that it's very easy to build anywhere, you don't get many "Red squares saying nono all the time". But dag nammit, the population sucks ass! In AOE2 each unit was worth 1 population no matter what, in AOE3 different unit's are worth different points. Now don't get me wrong this idea is pretty cool, making sure you don't have a million cannons or whatever, but the population limit is still stuck at 200, like the previous game.I was thinking was there a technical reason for that? Maybe, 400 guys all animating on screen might bring your system to a crawl pace (It wouldn't make a difference anyways due to multiplayer). So I'm sorry, 200 is good for AOE2, but 3? no way. =/

  • I owned AoE 1 and played a demo of 2, but that was all a long time ago. Now I'm more partial to Civ 3. 4 has been out for a while, I just haven't gotten it yet.
  • Civilization 4 is the bomb. I am so addicted to it, I had to uninstall it so that I could write essasys at the end of last semester. I would play instead of working, my reasoning being "Well I'm studying history, so playing Civ4 is like studying".
  • Awesome, tuttle. ;) I've read many stories where spouses uninstalled that game, or someone had to cut themself off because it's soo addicting.
  • The Civ4 expansion just came out yesterday, I might get it today. My friend was telling me that now when you build the great wall it actually appears on your border and holds back the barbarians.
  • I still don't know if the turn based play will work in this (DS version). But Gamespot thinks is great..
  • The DS AoE is good, I wrote something about it somewhere on here. Except that sometimes it hangs and I have to turn the DS off losing all my hard worked strategy. Annoys me no end.
  • Kiey, how is the expansion? I remember from civ3 (I think it was conquests) one of the expansions broke several units and made some parts of the game unbalanced. Catapults had a bombard of 2 (I think) and all of a sudden trebuchets are added with bombard 3 and cost the same. Now there was absolutely NO reason to build cats any more. There were a couple other instances of this if I remember correctly, where one unit was rendered completely useless. I hope the expansions for civ4 don't do this as well.

So far its pretty cool Starfox. There are a lot of nice additions mainly 3 I've really noticed so far: Vassal states, Warlord leaders, and the Great Wall Wonder.

Vassal states basically let you, rather then completely conquer a country, they become a vassal state aka puppet government. Basically you get some of their production, and you can take any resources they have, but you have to pay higher maintenance fees on your cities, and you have no control of their cities or units. But you can travel freely through their land, units heal as fast as they would in your territory, and they'll go to war when you do, or make peace when you do.

The warlord leader is really cool for war like players. They can do 3 things. They can put a military specialist in a city that gives all military units produced 2 additional experience points. Or, they can make a military academy in a city that lets military units be produced faster (I think 25% faster.) And their last ability is that they can grant 20 total experience points to military units in the same tile. When you do this the military leader joins one of the units, which looks cool.

And they finally brought back the Great Wall wonder, and its awesome. Rather than before where it just added city walls to all cities on your continent, now it actually makes a Great Wall around your border, depending on where your cultural boundaries are at the time. The wall itself prevents any barbarian units from crossing it. I have yet to see this in practice, but it looks really cool on the map.
