Portable hard drives

edited April 2009 in Technology
I've been looking into picking up a portable drive and I have a few questions I have not been able to find answers to.

1. Do portable drives have laptop drives inside of them?
2. Are they SATA drives?
3. Can you buy a low GB one and put a larger laptop drive in the case?
4. Am I better off buying an external drive case and putting a 3.5"/2.5" in it?
5. Does anyone have any links to articles where someone takes some of these apart?

  • If you get one that says 2.5" then it's probably a laptop SATA HDD.
You can get cases without the hard drive.
Getting a combined box as opposed to a case and drive can go either way, shop around.

I found this a while ago as I'm using a laptop ATM but want to be able to split the drive apart when I want to put the drive in a desktop.
