Harry Potter (spoilers be here)

edited July 2009 in Movies
Surprisingly, the search returned nothing on the Harry Potter series of movies or books.
I know that they aren't to everyone's taste, but I think they are a entertaining. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is now open in theaters. Has anyone watched it?

  • I listened to the books at work, I did find them entertaining. I'll be watching the movie Saturday.
  • Rowling tells a good story and has created some great characters, but the writing does leave a bit to be desired. I don't actually enjoy reading the books anymore, but the audiobooks read by Jim Dale are still very enjoyable. As for the movies, they've only gotten better with each one, and I definitely look forward to seeing The Half-Blood Prince.

My boyfriend and I are watching it on Friday morning and are also planning to see it in IMAX 3D on the 31st. I am just about to finish the audio book.

I know it's not the best writing, but the story is very entertaining. I am happy that book 7 will be 2 movies.

QFT. He does a really good impersonation of Hagrid.

  • Stephen Fry is where is at! All his voices are awesome.

I enjoyed the books until Half-Blood Prince, it and Deathly Hallows are trash. I still like the first five, Goblet of Fire being the best of them all, but the last two...ugh, makes me want to strangle something.

I hate the movies with a passion, that is all I will say on the matter.

  • I'm done with the fantasy Genre as a whole. I just don't enjoy it anymore. My only recent return to Fantasy is "Warehouse 13" but I don't really count that as fantasy...
  • I've sort of tailed off after the order of The Half-blood Prince. Rowling is a pain to listen to when you regularly listen to Pratchett even with Stephen Fry narrating.
  • I greatly enjoyed all of the books, with Prisoner of Azkaban being my favourite. The movies, on the other hand, were not all spectacular in my book. I though the Sorcerer's Stone was good and the Chamber of Secrets was great, but that the Prisoner of Azkaban was unmitigated shite. The Goblet of Fire picked the series up and I greatly enjoyed the Order of the Phoenix. Can't wait to see the new one.
  • I still find it strange they renamed the first book The Sorcerer's Stone in America. Was the word "philosipher's" that much of a turn off? Also: Is it changed inside the book?
  • Also: Is it changed inside the book?
    Yes.

    Yes.
    Woah, my mind is blown.

They thought children wouldn't want to read anything with the word "Philosopher" in the title. I'm not kidding.

Interesting. I just figured it was because most Americans don't know what the Philosopher's Stone is.

I had no interest in reading/watching any HP, but people kept recommending it to me. The final straw was that one of my favorite artists, Ben Caldwell, is a big fan, and has done a lot of Harry Potter fanart. I thought "if this awesome guy, who's even older than me, is a fan, I'll give it a shot". So I listened to the first couple of audiobooks at work. Can't say I was impressed. I thought the writing was a little clumsy and heavyhanded, though they are children's books, so I suppose that's to be expected. If I were a kid, or more of a fantasy fan, I'd probably have enjoyed them more. I CAN see why they're so popular with certain crowds. They weren't BAD, really, but I've got a lot of other stuff I'd rather spend my time on.

I haven't seen any of the films, but I did draw a fat naked guy at a life drawing session who said he was the model they based some troll in one of the movies on.
  • I didn't get in to the series until the 6th book came out and then I only listened to them in audio book form. I went with the U.K version because I don't care for dumbed down or regional changes just because I live in the U.S. I enjoyed the series quite a bit. I would love to see the Harry Potter's world expanded. What is life like being a wizard in China? What was life like being a wizard in the old west? That would be great.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed all of the books, and I just got back from seeing the most recent film. I don't think it captured Rowling's mood for the book well enough - they went rather heavy on the humor. I hope the next movie, which will be in two parts, will be better.
  • The movie was long!

Did you read The Darkness That Comes Before?
  • The movie was long!
It was shorter than Chamber of Secrets (161 min) and Goblet of Fire (157 min), with a runtime of only 153 minutes. The Watchmen film's theatrical release was 162 minutes, and the DVD director's cut is 186 minutes. Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet was 242 minutes.

There's nothing wrong with a long movie, provided it remains engaging throughout. You're paying the same amount of money, you might as well get more out of it.
  • Rotten Tomatoes gave it 89%, and my friend who is a big HP nut saw the midnight showing and said it was really good. So good he cried manly tears. I predict TONS of crying by myself. I am prepared with packs of tissues in my purse.

I always wondered about this as well. It would be really cool to see how it would happen. I remember seeing the Chinese team on a preview of the Quidditch video game and was in awe and amazement of the possibilities.

I like Harry Potter when it's about a boy's adventure in wizard school and not an angsty teen's angsty relationships with wizards and shit.

Yes, and I didn't really care for it. I can appreciate that it's a good book with a good story, but it just wasn't up my alley. I'm more into Science Fiction, something like Snowcrash is more to my liking.
  • something like Snowcrash is more to my liking
Oh man. I loved Snow Crash when I first read it about 10 years ago, but I tried to re-read it recently, and I couldn't get through it. It has a lot of interesting ideas, but it's soooo poorly written. Like, entire chapters are just expositional infodumps with an AI telling Hiro everything we need to know.
  • Yeah, It's basically nerd porn. I know it's not written particularly well, but I like technology, so it appeals to me. Also Enders Game is among my favorite books.

    The movie felt long!
  • Did anyone else get the feeling that part of their brain had disconnected from the rest when reading Snow Crash?
  • Did anyone else get the feeling that part of their brain had disconnected from the rest when reading Snow Crash?
Yes, the part that usually stops me from skipping past page upon page of needlessly meticulously detailed information about ancient Sumerian cluture and society shoved all through my sci-fi.
  • Also Enders Game is among my favorite books.
    Ender's Game is well-written.
  • I've never understood why Harry Potter is such a huge success. Admittedly, I've only watched the first two movies and haven't read any of the books. I can understand why people enjoy them, but is there something which makes them rise above all the other potential fantasy works? Or is it more a case of good timing? What I mean is, if you switched the timing and marketing of Harry Potter with something like Earthsea, would Earthsea have seen the same level of success?

Harry potter apeals better to a younger more mainstream audience.
