GeekNights Tuesday - Remembering Sailor Moon

Some 15 years ago, Rym watched all of Sailor Moon courtesy of VKLL fansubs he acquired on VHS. Tonight on GeekNights, as we begin watching the original Sailor Moon anime again thanks to its current re-release, he tries to remember what it was all about. With the new Sailor Moon Crystal coming, apparently following the manga much more closely this time, expect more Sailor Moon talk from us in the coming months. In the news, if you want to see some Ghost in the Shell: Arise, there is a screening next Thursday in a city near you!

As an aside, enjoy one of the most amazing angry Sailor Moon fan pages ever created. Such anger. So Weeaboo. Wow.

  • You know Tony Stark has done this at least once.
  • For what it's worth, Mazinger Z did air in some parts of the US as Tranzor Z. It was actually one of my favorite shows as a kid and aired in the Boston area some time after Voltron premiered. Baron Ashura was kept intact except for a name change to "Devileen" as a being that was "half-man, half-woman, and the worst of both" as described in the dub.

  • I remember going to a UK anime convention and seeing people from the companies putting DVDs on shop shelves, Manga, ADV and lone guy from MVM.

The MVM guy was talking about how he was basically a one man company. Perceptibly against the odds he'd managed to acquire the Sailor Moon rights. He thought he'd make a boatload of money off the deal... Turns out no one was buying, young kids don't have the money, casuals fans saw it on TV, and the hardcore have fan subs.

It was a sad story as the guy was an anime fan trying to popularise his passions and make money. But it's good to see MVM is still around today.
