GeekNights Wednesday - Gundam Unicorn UC

Tonight on GeekNights, we review Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. It's basically pornography for Gundam fans, and might be both incomprehensible and emotionally void if you aren't too knowledgeable about Gundam. In the news, GeekNights is back! At least, back until Rym goes to PAX Australia. Hatsune Miku will have a concert in New York in October. Scott tells us how not to pronounce Rosh Hashanah, and South Park is back tonight!

  • You uploaded a three-month-old episode! I'm trying to figure out who used that music video as a thing of the day (but I think I know already).
  • Just a heads up, the links lead to the June 24th 2014 show.

  • Yeah, I knew that immediately after I uploaded it. Since Scott never gave me admin, I can't fix the forum post, and my back-end gives me no way to update the file for the episode post.
  • Fixed it. Listen to your Gundam porn review at will!
  • What the shit is this.
  • Daryl on AWO just did a review on this one. If I recall he said it was probably one of the most recent accessible Gundam series for a somebody who has never watched a Gundam before.
  • I don't normally listen to the second half of anime episodes, as it always feel like you are talking a different language. Not Japanese, but anime-manga-ese. I just don't understand any of the nouns. Then in this episode you used lots of nouns I didn't understand to explain nouns you didn't think non-Gundam fans would understand, and I didn't understand those either.

For example, what is a gundam? Not what is Gundam, but what is a gundam?
  • A giant robot, but not the shinji-get-in-the-fucking kind.
  • So I don't know what shinji means, but the conversation in the podcast was how the people in the show knew that a giant robot was a gundam and not a normal giant robot.

Sorry, dumb joke. Neon Genesis Evangelion - the other reasonably well known giant robot show - has a character called Shinji, who is ostensibly a giant robot pilot, but spends most of his time being whiny rather than getting in the robot, thus, two kinds of Robots - Giant robot, and Shinji get in the fucking robot.

All of the following mecha are from one Gundam series or another. These first three are actually Gundams.

  • So are there people in all of them? And are the real Gundams just more powerful than the non-Gundams? Or is it more subtle?

All mobile suits, Gundam or otherwise, have people in them. They have to be piloted because Minovsky Particles prevent any kind of remote control.

Gundams are the best mobile suits around. Even so, there are always a few opponents strong enough to challenge them. Otherwise it would just be dumb. A common trope of all Gundam shows is to show the main characters wiping the floor with a bunch of scrubs. Then they'll have them get in a fight with a real opponent, so you understand that those mechs/pilots are on such a higher level compared to the rest.
  • Heard the Bunny Drop warning and shouted "Fucking what?!" out loud.
  • Think of the mobile suits as cars. A Gundam is the equivalent of an F-1 car and requires more skill to handle.

I looked up a possible picture to include and discovered that Toyota made a Char themed car.

    Ladies...
  • What about New Types are they just humans with psychic abilities? Or is it more than that?
  • What about New Types are they just humans with psychic abilities? Or is it more than that?

Newtypes are the next step in the evolution of humanity. Due to living in space, some major mutations are beginning to appear in humans that hint at what all humans will be like after the very long process of evolution runs its course. Those who are further along are newtypes.

Not only do newtypes have some sort of psychic abilities, they are generally harder, better, faster, stronger, and smarter than the average spacenoid. Due to their abilities they tend to find each other across time and space and their collective actions have a major impact on the course of history.
  • Was listening to this episode while eating Vegemite on toast while my cats were trying to get a taste because they love Vegemite.

With Rosh Hashanah, do you have access to the specific apple and honey combinations at this time of the year only or is it an excuse to have these types of sweet food like with other religion's new year celebrations?
e.g. Hindu new year Diwali, my parents make a lot of sweets that are commonly made for that time of the year.

Is this true for all gundams e.g. Seed or just the Unicorns?

    Rusty!...
  • What's the best way to watch the original TV show? Is there a legal streaming option? Someone told me to watch out if buying since there are a lot of bootlegs of the 1st show.

It used to be legal on YouTube. There's an official Gundam channel on YouTube with subs and everything. See if it still exists. If not, sail the high seas.
