You could get the Nexus5x? it's only slightly larger than 5" and cheap!

    It's still huge. Source: I own a 5x
  • Grow bigger hands? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I hear the singer for the Flaming Lips loves his Galaxy note 5.

So my phone is basically on deaths door and it was old to begin with, meaning I'm in the market. Budget is 400€ max, but I'd prefer to stay in the 250-350€ range. What do you guys recommend?

  • Samsung or HTC. I've been using Samsung phones the last 5 years. Apart from the recent hiccup with the note sevens, they are absolutely top shelf. Even the budget models. I recently upgraded to a note 7 from a note 5. My previous phones were the note 4 and the galaxy nexus before that.
  • After talking with a friend who keeps an eye on smartphones as well as reading several test comparisons I'm right now eyeing the Huawei P9 lite. Anybody got a thought on this?
  • The new Google phone got announced last week and is launching on the 20th, although price is on the high end.

I currently have the HTC One M9 and while I really like it, I want to go to Project Fi. I'm likely going to pick up the 5" Pixel when my contract is up in May.

    OnePlus 3

Already pre-ordered, it's also a flagship phone so its in the correct price range.

The ad on the website is brilliant, namely at 43 seconds.

  • Got my PIxel a few days ago, it's so great.
I don't know what DAC they're using but it's way better than any other mp3 or phone before and is rivalling my main desktop's specialised sound card.

Phone is as phone does, getting Android Pay in Australia is great as NFC POS terminals are ubiquitous.

Hardware is hardware, no physical buttons and the fingerprint reader on the back is the best, build quality is the best. Surprisingly the top back half of the phone in glass provides more grip and comfort while holding.
Camera is so fast also having full quality Google Photos is great.

The OS and everything is lagless. USB C charging is incredibly quick.
Best thing is the software, 100% the best experience.

Definitely the best 5" screen phone. It's barely larger than my last small phone.
Initially when opening the box I thought I would regret not getting the higher resolution XL but this one just feels comfortable for my hands while when I'm playing around with friend's Nexus 6P always feels like a balancing act.

Google Assistant is great, half the time I'm doing the majority of stuff by voice.

    Downside:
Wanted the limited edition blue one but that was US only and got sold out immediately.
No stereo speakers, although I only really used that part of my last phone for listening to podcasts while shaving, will just use the Chromecast audio now.

Is a bit slippery and I don't trust others to hold this phone and not drop it (everyone wants to see it).
  • Also loving the Pixel. Pretty much no complaints, other than my lust for a mythical 4" phone.

  • Its just too bad it doesn't have a micro sd card slot.

    Telstra, or just outright?

Outright, I only got burned once by going on a plan (never again am I doing that).

Only ever used Telstra when I was working in a rural area up north where there wasn't enough coverage form other carriers. Never again haha.

    Never doing it again.
I got it from the Google store.
They source them all from Hong Kong so you can get them cheaper as grey imports, I couldn't wait and neither could my other phone.

  • I'll chime on on the Pixel as well, got the 5" and I'm really happy with it over my Nexus 5 that I had. My only complaints on it is that it feels a bit top heavy and I'm really not comfortable with using it without a case. Everything else is top notch, A++++, would recommend to a friend, blah blah blah.
  • One of my friends at work has one of the limited edition blue Pixels. it's nice.

I was so sad that the blue one was NA only, I stayed up to buy early in case they sold out, at least I got one as soon as possible.
  • Slight buyers remorse for not getting the Pixel XL for the higher resolution screen but the everyday use of a smaller phone was more attractive than a tiny bit better VR experience.

Also considering how jank both Oculus and Vive look when something doesn't work right and you notice pixels. I don't think going from 1080p to 1440p would have been as immense as 1080 to 8k or whatever most people are speculating the optimum resolution for VR to be.

However the battery experience has been great, on a normal day of GPS, 4g, Wifi, games and reading I get home with 60% of the battery still left.

During PAX when I would usually need an external battery went through every day from like 7-8am to 1-2am and arriving at the hotel with about 30 - 33% of the battery still left. (Had wifi, 4g, gps going more than normal, also using the phone for scoring games and what not).

Downside after losing my voice on the first night from speaking louder than normal and a bit more alcohol than usual and some hay fever, Google Assistant didn't recognise my voice anymore lol. Started recognising it again by the time I got home. Luckily could just command functions using the home button but the normal use case of a voice assistant should not need you to be at the screen of your device.

Also found us a pretty great cocktail bar and dessert place.

Didn't pull my wallet out except for getting PAX band at the start of the line, NFC everywhere.
  • Continuing to have amazing experience with the Pixel. It's a high-end phone in every regard. Just getting to the end of the day at 20-30% after heavy use is an amazing feeling. That did not happen for me with a Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Moto X, or Nexus 5X.

20% holy shit. You Android people tolerate a lot. Or maybe you're just watching video all day long.

    Unless it's PAX or something, I am usually 90%+ with every iPhone I've had. That includes 3G, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

There must be some misunderstanding (or a typo), as I can't imagine you're getting to the end of the day with 90% battery and no charging.

....unless.... cell phone Hanukkah came early.

Yesterday I unplugged at 5:30AM, plugged back in at 11PM with 20% battery. I listened to ~3 hours of podcasts, used GPS for 45 min, watched a 30min TV show at lunch, and played 5 Hearthstone matches. Other than that I was on and off the phone througout the day just to text and look shit up.

This feels more on par with what Apple phones are delivering. Or at least what I remember. I had iPhone (OG), 3GS, and 4S, and never felt the need to lug around an external battery like people do today. I was even thinking of switching back to Apple if they delivered the goods with the 7 and Google disappointed with their next flagship phone. The reverse happened, so I stuck on Android. Apple seems poised to bring the big guns for iPhone 8, but I'm not itching anymore.

Of course I'm charging. Aren't you? Why not?

Tomorrow I won't charge at all once I get out of bed. I'll be shocked if I go below 50%.
  • Honestly, I'm not plugging in at the moment just to test the phone. Like I said, my battery woes were so bad I was ready to switch. I've got a charger stationed at every single spot I spend a moderate amount of time, and a giant backup in my bag. I wanted to make sure this is real.

The novelty has just about worn off and I'll soon go back to plugging in anytime I sit down.
  • I remember at a certain point my 4s essentially living on USB live support, maybe 2-3 hours of useful life from 100% But it was 3 years old at that point.

My note4 is nearing that point now, with the original battery anyway.

Can't you get a replacement battery for like $5 or $10?

Just to test things out, I didn't plug in my phone all day. I woke up in the morning around 7AM and unplugged it. I haven't plugged it into power since then.

It's an iPhone 7. I used it just as much as I do on any other day. Spotify on the subways. Some Twitter while on the shitter. I think I watched a YouTube video on the train also. Some Google hangout. A few phone games. Took a few photos. A normal day of smart phone usage. It is now 10:45 PM. That is 16 hours without being plugged into any power source for even one second.

    The battery is at 74%.

Throw your worthless Android phone in the trash.

And yet, my phone would stay at a solid 60 percent at midnight, after being used pretty much all day on slack, pulling up guidebook, checking my mail, the odd phone game, etc, etc at PAX, and yet light use, you're at 74% after less time?

I think maybe you need to come over to where the good phones are, Scott, instead of trying to convince everybody how amazing your hipster trash phone is. What's next, a bell rotary?
