Rapeplay and the News

edited February 2009 in Video Games
So, in Japan, there is a scary hentai game where the player can rape anime girls. I found out about this and I went "Eew, hentai perverts. They can die in a fire."
I was on BoingBoing (Danny Choo was talking about it) and I tried to push it from my mind. That's not what I wanted to talk about though. What I wanted to talk about is that the mainstream media has suddenly become aware of this and it looks to be a big deal, like "Grand Theft Auto Hot Coffee Games Corrupt Our Youth" kind of big deal. Like, it took up the whole front page of the Metro and made news all over the place.

Do you ever wonder what will happen when the weirdness of the internet becomes apparent to the grandmas and other mundies? Do you think a game should be a criminal offence? Although Amazon has pulled it from it's stock people are still upset that it is available for download on the internet and are trying to stop that. Your thoughts, please?

Question is where do you draw the line? I play GTA, I don't go killing people on the street, can you prove that by playing the game, I'll be inclined to do it in real life? A lot of people like to roll play when they have sex, and there are some that have a rape fantasy element involved, should they be jailed? should it be criminal? can you prove that they are more prone to raping people in real life? I think it can actually work as an outlet for repressed people so they don't do it in real life. To each their own no?

It shouldn't be illegal (just like simulated rape in porn). However, it should be sold with large warnings and within whatever rating system the nation selling it uses. This is no better and no worse than porn that does the same thing. While I despise it, it shouldn't be censored.
I think that most "grandmas and mundies" are already aware of rape, porn, and the like.

I agree. I don't see how this is different than the "Simulated Rape" in pornos. I wonder why the news pundits don't get up in arms about porn videos that show fake rape, but if it is video games...watch out!

It's kind of like how people are more shocked by a porn cartoon than a porn movie. It is a medium they associate with the youth, therefore they get more upset by it.

  • Their is a small article about this in the Times Union (local Albany paper) today. Basically they are trying to get this game banned in New York State and some websites have stopped carrying it.

It would be interesting to see exactly who bought this game and if any of those people are convicted sex offenders.
  • There is a large set off issues in our society that simply won't be fixed until all the old people die and the young people get old. Then there will be a new set of problems that the new young people will be bothered by and they will have to wait until they get into power in order to fix them. There are only a few solutions to these problems that I can see.

One would be for an older generation to develop that continues to change throughout their lives, and stays hip, thus bridging the generational gap. Maybe it's our generation? I'd like to hope so, but even we have an often negative attitude towards punk kids.

Another solution would be for one generation to give up some of its long awaited power, and give more to the younger generation earlier. Once one generation gets to solve its problems earlier on, every future generation will have the same luxury.

The people here might still hold the same opinion on this topic when VR rape simulators become available to all, but can you say the same for other members of our generation?

Don't worry, that's deserving. Even teenagers think the same way, especially towards the "hip", American Eagle-wearing crowd (more people my age will be familiar with this stereotype), or just more "normal" people who don't really think for themselves. At least I do. As long as teenagers act the way that they do, people will have the same attitude towards them as they've always had. At least maybe in future generations they will be able to tell that not all of them are like that.

Maybe this will keep some of the scary rape people from raping? At least some of them, hopefully.
  • I would hardly call this a "youth" specific issue. Adults play dirty video games. This is more of an issue because it is considered a new medium for pornography (even though porn games have been around for quite some time). That fact that it is rape and not just sex pushes a red button for a lot of people. That combined with too many people (both young and old) pretending to be outraged about something that matters little in the grand scheme have turned this particular game into a major uproar. Also, sex issues and "our children our in danger" stories sell papers.

Who buys papers? Only old people.

While the people who ar eplaying these games vary in age, the people who are in an uproar over it are universally old people and luddites. Younger people who are connected to our modern Internet society know about things like 2 girls 1 cup and goatse. While the vast majority have no interest in a rape game, they understand that fearing it or trying to ban it is completely idiotic.
  • I work with a lot of people the FRC's age that have no idea about anything on the Internet outside of face book. Also, the newspaper stories are available on the web for free often, and they attract a young crowd that likes to read the salacious stuff, too. You forget that the majority of people (even our age and younger) are completely oblivious to most video games and the "series of tubes".

Being indifferent to modern technology and internet culture doesn't make you a Luddite.

*cough* Ummm.. I get a newspaper. I happen to like reading local news (which is helpful for my budding political career)
  • Creating, selling, buying or playing a game should never be a crime. This would be akin to a thought crime. We don't put people who play Doom or Half-Life into jail for murder and neither do we do that to kids that point their index fingers at others and say "bang, bang" (even though I heard fucked up stories from american schools giving out suspensions for stuff like that after Columbine).

Get it online. You're wasting money for no reason.
  • It may not be available online with paying for it as well. Smaller local newspapers do that a lot.

I guess if you live in hicksville. I believe that this is Scojo's local paper.

Also, everyone search for your local town on Google News. You will be surprised at how much it digs up.

I wouldn't spend my money on it, but it isn't my money. If you like getting an actual newspaper - who cares?
Back to the point at hand: Does anyone on the forum think this game and those like it should be banned? I think most, if not all of us are in the "say no to censorship" category, but I am curious as to what argument people might make in support of the ban.

I'm on the "no censorship" side of the argument, but I can feel a little sympathy for the people who feel that this sort of thing encourages or enables actual rape. We'd need good statistics, and even if that were shown to be the case, I still wouldn't be comfortable with banning it, but I'd be a lot more ambivalent.

It reminds me of the Simpsons child porn case. I was 100% against the idea that anything was wrong here until I read a post by a woman who claimed to be a computer crimes investigator with the FBI. She said that these particular images are among a group of images that you almost always find on the computers of people who abuse children -- that, in fact, they're frequently used in child grooming. That makes me uncomfortable enough to equivocate a bit about these freedoms. I'm still on the side of free speech, but I feel a bit less confident about it.
  • Is this whole furore about the fact that it's fake rape porn or over the fact it's a video game? There's probably a lot of this kinda thing in plain picture/video form and people using video games to play out fantasies is nothing new.

On an interesting note, due to a recent change in UK law, I could be arrested for owning any pornographic material that depicts people in a life-threatening situation, this includes something like Left-4-Head.

A totally NSFW (but hilarious) review of Rapelay by Something Awful, just for those questioning how bad a hentai game can be. If I may quote:
In the past Hentai games have often catered to casual rape enthusiasts. These are perfectly normal folks like you, me and your next door neighbor who only leaves his apartment to buy canned meat and plastic tarps. I like to think of this audience as the "beer and pretzel" rape gamer. They're interested in a fun "pick up and play" rape game and they don't want to get bogged down in details. Then there are the rape grognards who want a rape simulator to be as realistic as possible. They want it to include accidental pregnancies, crying, abortion, threat of murder, fuel mixture, full elevator control, and pre-rape start-up checks. RapeLay is the grognard's rape simulator. It is the Falcon 4.0 of rape.

  • Reading that caused me to suddenly remember this.

People need to get over what other people do with their time. If people want to rape, murder, and pillage in video games I couldn't care less. It's none of my business or the business of the people complaining. Statistically speaking, a very small percentage of the people who play these games go on to commit similar crimes. And the ones that do were usually very mentally unstable to begin with.
  • The thing that makes me annoyed is that rape in video games has been around since Custer's Revenge, and to act so shocked now is stupid.

lol, didn't make the connection between Rapelay and Custer. Good call.

Umm.. We've known about Custer's Revenge for a long, long time...
  • When I read "rapeplay" I thought it sounded like some extra game criteria to review it by. Like "the game had great sound, good visuals, decent controls, and great rapeplay."

So.... I guess rapeplay would be how well the product managed while raping it? Hmm... Reminds me of something I'd rather forget.
