edited August 2009 in GeekNights
Tonight on GeekNights in honor of the upcoming Tron Legacy, we discuss various video games based on the world of Tron. In the news, the slim PS3 is official, and MMO balancing is the wrong problem to solve. Also, PAX is soon, we are going, and our schedule is announced.

  • I will say, this was a fun show to do for some reason. ^_~

I think I'm actually going to get a PS3 now, the appeal of a smaller PS3 for a reasonable price and the fact that there are good games for it now has gotten rid of any arguments against the system for me.
By the way, the game you didn't know the name of is Shadow Complex.

It's mostly riding on Project Big Kitty for me.

@Rym: You should just keep a list of games you're nostalgic about to use as game day backups.

What games are you talking about?

Also, how much free time can one person possibly have? If you have a PC and a DS, there are more good games out there to play than any human being has time to play. Even if you are a high school or college kid, throw a 360 on top of that, and that is definitely way more games than you will ever have time to play. So what do you need a PS3 for?
  • LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet and Clank, inFamous, Fat Princess, Metal Gear Solid 4, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1 and 2, Uncharted, Folklore, plus God of War III, Final Fantasy XIII (and it's spin-offs), and Kingdom Hearts III in the future.
  • Even as a college kid, I have no use for my 360. The only system I use for games these days is Steam. Not only do they have wicked awesome deals for games (who doesn't love their weekend sales?), but they make it so easy to add/remove games at will when my HD gets full. Add in the great indie games/mods and you are set for life when it comes to vidjagaming. My 360 is essentially a netflix box these days.

How does your hard drive get full? Either you have a bajillion games, or a small drive.

Small drive; only 300 GB. Combine that with recording video, musics, and other data and it gets pretty full quickly. I should probably do a reformat soon, but I think I'll wait to upgrade to Windows 7.

Just buy more drives. They are so cheap.

Just got done listening to the episode and I would have to say that playing Discs of Tron on MAME would probably not be the best experience for the game. When I was a kid we had a DoT cabinet at our local arcade and I remember the controls being slightly different than most games of the time. It sported an 8-way joystick with a trigger and thumb button for movement/firing and it also had an optical spinner that had a push-pull mechanism built into it to control your aiming cursor in the horizontal and vertical space. Without those controls the game would probably devolve into a nearly unplayable mess.

I'm also surprised you guys didn't mention the pseudo-sequel Tron2.0 FPS game that was released in '03. As far as FPS games go it was very enjoyable, and it put a very entertaining spin (not to mention somewhat of an upgrade) on the film's universe.

Damn. You guys got me thinking all nostalgic-like now. I'm going to have to go hunt up my Tron action figures that are somewhere in the storage bins in my closet and break out my copy of the DVD.

Honestly, I don't think a PS3 is worth buying just for these games. Given, the only games I've played of these are MGS4 and LBP.

I understand your logic for saying this seeing as how the PS3 doesn't have as many third party titles compared to the Wii or the 360. But I feel that argument is invalid as that is pretty the same as saying how I wouldn't buy the Wii because it has Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, or LoZ: Twilight Princess on it. I think the titles that Li_Akahi presented are pretty good as I've played and seen the games and they are/look quite awesome. Granted though, I wish Kaz Hirai would open up the third party market and allow more games to go to the PS3, but I feel that seeing as the PS3 Slim is cheaper than the other numerous versions of the PS3, is a Blu-Ray player that (again) is cheaper than most Blu-Ray players, and has potential to go beyond what it is right now. I personally think it's a fair purchase.

  • I would've thought a PS3 would be worth it just for the BR player if nothing else.
  • I think with the PS3 slim out kinda justifies buying a PS3 if you like a lot of it's games and need a Blu-Ray player, although I would go for the 360 first.

You've clearly never played a Ratchet and Clank game. :P

That's true, but I heard this one wasn't exactly spectacular as far as Ratchet and Clank games go.

Fair enough. Come to think of it, to anyone considering a PS3 who doesn't own a PS2: just get a PS2. You'll be able to play a ton of awesome games on the cheap including, incidentally, Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal.
  • I agree. Also, if you don't already own all three, buy the MGS pack with the first three Metal Gear Solid games. $30 for two meh to pretty good games and one absolutely amazing game.
  • I would get a PS3 for 3 things: the BR, the good library of games that the PS3 have, and that in the near future the PS3 will be able to play PS2 games (again).
  • On the subject of Shadow Complex (the Metroidvania Scott was talking about), BUY IT. I played the first hour, and it's basically a faster paced, more action oriented version of Super Metroid. I wonder how long it's going to last, because I feel like I'm speeding through the game. I've heard it's expected to be around 9-12 hours long though, so maybe the world of the game is bigger than I expected.

I finished it in around 9 glorious hours. But...

Awash in the glow of 100% item completion, out of curiosity I read the Wikipedia article about the game. Oh, based on a novel, Empire, by Orson Scott Card. Cool, I liked Ender's Game. What's this one about, I wonder.

    Fuck.

For those who have played it, y'know how the enemy call themselves "The Restoration"? Well, it's not called that in Card's novel. They're called "The Progressive Restoration." Progressive. As in liberal. A massive, secret, industrial program to enslave America under a regime of Socialism and Death Panels. I should have guessed this, though, as the Progressive plot to take over America was going to begin with the liberation of lefty San Fransisco. But I'm really kicking myself for not recognising it sooner, when the final boss battle consisted of firing a volley of nukes at (spoilers) Barney Frank while he attempts to sodomise a bald eagle. Thankfully, I prevailed, and managed to save America from the perils of affordable health care. You're welcome.

I seem to remember seeing a number of blog postings about PS2 compatibility never coming back to the PS3:

    From Coilihouse.net
"People change, and not always for the better. In recent years, Orson Scott Card, who made his fame with brilliant works like EnderÂ’s Game and Speaker for the Dead, has turned his attention towards advocating for one loathsome cause after another. Dogma and fear have gotten the better of his creative talents. If you want evidence, read Empire. Hell, Warner Brothers has the rights, so it may soon be coming to a theater near you."

What's Tron? All I know is that it's a movie and that Futurama spoofed it.
Should I listen to the show or will it spoil the film for me?

    Wikipedia is your best friend.
Also, you will not be spoiled at all.

  • I didn't want to wiki it because Wikipedia usually includes spoilerific plot synopsis. I just want to know the general premise to see if it is worth watching as anything more than a pop-culture reference.

Dude gets sucked into his computer, which looks exactly what you'd expect from early 80s film sets. At least, that's what a I know. It also has sweet lightcycles that race.

Yeah. Basically, game designer/computer programmer gets cheated and fired, then years later gets sucked into a giant computer, where he teams up with a program (Tron) in order to defeat an evil computer overlord that is trying to take over the world. It's pretty fantastic.

Not to mention cause people to blow up because of hitting the walls you leave behind.

In short, light cycles are da bomb.
