Everytime I go near Enumclaw I can only think of that incident.

Durarara is based on a visual novel.
Hate to be a pedantic asshole, but you're talking about light novels. Visual novels are text/click video games. Basically, think about your standard Japanese porn game like those released by Key or Leaf. Those are visual novels. Light novels are basically novels with a couple illustrations.

  • The overlap between Durarara and Baccano are much deeper than just the director. It's the same director, the same studio and the light novels (which is an egregious mistake by you guys) were written by the same guy published by the same people.

    Yeah, easy mistake to make.

And visual novels are not porn games according to some scary folk. They would rip out your throat for calling an Ero-game visual novel and vice versa.

No, seriously, I can see how someone would make that mistake. Light novels have pictures, so they are "visual," visual novels are not really "novels" in the traditional sense. Lay off, you little otaku-heads.

  • And no-one else got it.
AHAHAHAHAHAHA-you wish. It was quite obvious already before you put your prediction on the forums. Ram your fucking ego against a pin PLEASE.

To be honest, I should not have downloaded this episode. It utterly destroyed the awesome build up with the Luke and Jared interview of yesterday. I mean, you could've had Wikipedia open to check the few claims you made. The anime covered the first 3 light novels and there are supposedly still a few novels being written.

Problem: We're talking about Scrym, THE PERFECT, FLAWLESS, HOT-AIR HEADS THAT ARE SCRYM. They claim to be intelligent, but don't fucking check one Wikipedia page beforehand. And I doubt they know that a light novel has images in it, or that they even thought about that fact when they mentioned it.

Yes, they know because I have talked about light novels before. I read light novels and regular novels from Kinokuniya regularly. I think it is probably that they heard me talk about light novels and then heard me talk about visual novels and got them confused. They are intelligent, but they (like every other human) often make mistakes. I teach them about Japanese stuff they had wrong or didn't know a lot about.

Plus, wasn't this more a review of the show rather than super informative data of every little thing.

No access to the MP3 feed at work due to fascist network administrators. Don't want the expanded notes to be buried on page three, now do we? ;D
  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the expanded notes were for searchability. In which case it really doesn't matter what page they're on.

Excuse me for wanting to save end users the inconvenience of having to click back to the first page of a thread to read through the whole thread if they hit on one of the topics in the search. :D

Those people are wrong and thus their opinions are invalid.

Did anybody else wonder what happen with Izaya and his main goal? I mean he didn't seem all that bothered after it was all set and done. I thought the whole point of him causing a triangle gang war was to connect Celty back with her head. And for Izaya to be there when it happens so he happily can ride off to Valhalla.

Scrym making mistakes?! PANIC, SCRAMBLE, PANIC! Maybe it would be time better spent if you told them that instead of everyone else that already knows so.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't a lot of people hate Eden of the East and Ergo Proxy?
I've never heard anyone stating they hate either show. Eden of the East just ends weakly (probably to get people to the film theatre) and Ergo Proxy isn't what you expect.

There's at least 5 more volumes of stuff. Izaya'll have enough strings to manipulate I guess. Also, that copper, he only appeared 2 or 3 times outside of the OP/ED. Can't wait to see more of him in season 2/however they continue.

Very awesome episode. Have been waiting since the "Anime Scott Fell Asleep Watching" episode for something that caught my attention.

I actually caught Durarara (yeah, Scott gotcha there with the extra "ra" in the title, Rym) before Baccano and personally liked it better... at least for the first part of Durarara, that is. The initial episodes really do a good job introducing all the weird characters and the new life Mikado has suddenly gotten himself into. I personally thought explaining the headless rider just a few episodes in was a strange move and could have been saved for the last episode, but other than that, all the other character introductions were great. Come the second arc, though, stuff seemed a bit messier, which is interesting, considering how much more the viewers know. Stuff like additional characters for the sake of plot just didn't turn out as well as I thought, I guess. And the whole thing with the slasher ended up taking a turn for the worse, especially since I was hoping for a replacement of sorts to the headless rider after finding out who she really was. Still, a pretty good anime as a whole and anxiously awaiting its licensing.

Also, in terms of the title, I always thought it had multiple meanings to it. In addition to what was said about the motorcycle sound, there's also the fact that a dullahan plays a somewhat major role to the series as well as the term daladala introduced during the second arc stuff, meaning something along the lines of "dilly-dallying." [EDIT: Yeah I know that it was directly stated that "daladala" was the root term to which Mikado got the name for the Dollars, but you can't deny that the term is eerily similar to "durarara."

Overall, an alright episode, but like the other guys said, you might wanna fact-check some stuff beforehand. And like Scott said, Rym... no matter how many "ra"s you add to it, that doesn't make it any less annoying when said out loud. Still, keep it up :D.

I think that making Celty an actual character early in the series is one of the best things that Durarara does. Character that has it's own character arch and development is much better than mystery that you have to wait to find out what it's all about, especially in character drama focused show like Durarara.
  • One of the plot devices I really liked, was how in the last arc you had the triple cross action going on. With characters in all 3 gangs. It felt like this plot point could have been explored a whole lot more though but wasn't.

Celty was the character that tied the rest together and is generally considered to be the main character for as far as you can say there is one. Not fleshing her out at the start would have been a bad idea.
  • I personally can't wait for the OAV, I heard mention of Izaya's sisters coming in the episode. No Vorona though...

Generally people don't hate EotE or Ergo Proxy, they hate that it's initial premise was amazing but then devolved into a mess of wasted potential. I thought the first two episodes of EotE were the best two opening episodes of any anime ever, sadly almost every episode afterwards was disappointing comparatively.

While I agree that Celty ties the whole series together, I feel like they could have done the series just as well by keeping her backstory from the viewers. I mean, we don't exactly have a detailed backstory for the old man and little girl from "Baccano" and yet they did an excellent job in starting and ending the series.

Agreed. If anything, the "Eden of the East" series itself was more of a backstory needed to the superior movie that followed.

    Extended Notes:

    | - Dead air while Rym and Scott re-enact the "stabbing"
Was it meant to be a re-enactment? It seemed like they were meant to throw to an audio clip, but there was a tech error. Either way it was a confusing moment.

Sounded like dead air to me. I don't know if Scrym had the webcam on for this show, but either way that section made for bad radio. :)

I might have edited in a hurry. I may re-upload the episode and fix that.

Meta aside: I'm very close to upgrading our studio yet again. We've outgrown dual channel recording, especially as we start bringing more guests in, so I need some better infrastructure. I'm either getting a racked Firewire interface or a Mackie. This will greatly increase our capacity to have guests and cut down on editing errors.
