What up listeners?!

edited November 2005 in GeekNights
Scott here,

So our podcast is relatively new and doesn't have a lot of readership yet, but it's growing fast! We think we've got something good going on and we're going to keep producing it four times a week as best we can.

To get the ball rolling we need to start hearing some listener feedback. Any comment you want to make about the show you can post it right here. If you want you can also send feedback to geeknights@gmail.com. If you want to send audio feedback don't attach it, please just post or e-mail a link to an audio file you have hosted elsewhere.

Even if you don't have a comment, post here anyway. We want to get a dialog started with the listeners so we can get to know you, if we don't already.

  • Starting with Tuesday, November 8th, we changed up the format a bit. We talk about fewer news stories, and talk about them in greater detail, in addition to actually explaining what we're talking about beforehand.

We think it's a better way, but we need you to tell us! More news? Less news? What do you want?

Personally, in this case, I would prefer a number of various news stories with limited time spent on each, with one or two being featured with lengthier comment. This allows for deeper exploration into a few important topics without losing pace and getting caught into too much conjecture and opinion.

    Just my opinion.

  • I think that the podcasts have improved a lot since the early ones. Very little awkward pauses, if any, and the segues between topics is much smoother.

The interview idea sounds interesting. But would bringing them in as a guest or as a guest commentator on a specific topic of the day also appeal to people?
  • Probably interviewing the person just like on the late night tv shows. When you interview someone who has some amount of fame the listeners usually want to hear them talk more than you. If you have a discussion with them then you have equal parts talking. If you interview them you only ask questions and they do all the talking.
  • What about using Monday night to hit upon Sci-Fi when the material presents itself.

I like the banter of the news, even if you guys can't find a complete topic, a foreshortened cast on Monday Night might be good.

I really liked the show you guys posted last Thursday night, I think it shows a good idea of the values behind the show and provides a decent manifesto. It's one of those shows that could help boost the show's popularity.

If you guys are ready to try for prime-time, you should register for podcast alley, and try and make a promo or two to help whore yourselves out.
  • Sci-fi would work, but there isn't so much happening in that department. It doesn't really help that I'm barely a fan of sci-fi. I only like very hard and old sci-fi mostly. I don't even like this Firefly thing everyone else seems to thing is so amazing. So talking about sci-fi might be difficult.

You're talking about the college rant show? Interesting, I didn't think that episode was so amazing. We'd pretty much thought our Tuesday and Wednesday shows were the best.

Oh, we are on podcast alley. I registered us for just about every podcast directory I didn't think would start spamming us. And we're definitely making a promo this weekend to submit around the block.

We still need a 300x300 image for our feed and id3 tags, I think we'll do that this weekend too and submit to iTunes.
  • The last podcast where you were talking about all the computer stuff...man, WAY over my head. Sort of lost interest about halfway through the cast. If that's what you guys were goin for, super, but I think you'd alienate some less tech-savvy listeners.
  • Really good, really good.
  • What's up with all the necroposting lately?

Newbies to the forum. They want to catch up, I guess?
  • So take part in new threads. Don't bring back threads from three damn years ago.

Why not? The purpose of having threads is that discussions are consolidated. I have no problem at all with people posting in old threads, and in fact I'd encourage it.

Yeah, no point in having two threads talking about the same topic.
  • But it's like if you have a conversation one day and one of the people talking stays talking, then a week after the fact he begins the conversation like if you had not stopped it. Takes a while to get into the mindset.
Not to mention your opinion can change, sometimes making the discussion pointless.
  • I agree, if there is a thread about what you want to talk about, post in it. There is no need to start a new thread. But this thread for example, is completely outdated to what is going on now.
So our podcast is relatively new and doesn't have a lot of readership yet
  • I think you guys should keep up the podcast, and maybe it'll be really famous! You could have four nights a week, and your own forum, which may become an ivory tower of the internets!

    I love time machines.
  • This thread died a month before my account was created. Ubernecropost FTW.

This thread is so old, that back when it was created, people were reading the podcast in binary!
  • It bugs me that you guys don't really talk much about non Japanese cartoons.

Are there any in particular you want us to talk about? We saw Persepolis in the theatre not too long ago. Avatar is fantastic. I suppose we could review The Simpsons/Futurama/Family Guy, but shows like that (as Movies you Should See always worries) tend to descend into quotefests, as I have little to say beyond "they're funny."

We could review some Pixar movies I suppose. We used to review a lot of movies, back when we had time to watch all of the Netflixes every week.
  • Exo-Squad!
  • I'd love a review on Persepolis.
  • How about an episode on the state of USA animation?

Also your thoughts on CGI versus hand drawn cells.

    Is there any U.S. animation?

I would love more movie reviews. I really enjoyed the Scrym view of the film world, and you put me onto Attack The Gas Station!

    Samurai Jack.
  • If you review live action movies, you should start with the best - the masterpiece works of Ritchie, Fincher and Lucas.

For Christ sakes man! Review Avatar! And I mentioned it to you at the New York Animefest, but I'm sure you don't remember, you should talk about Blade of the Immortal. Epic series. Honestly.

I love how people assume we have read and watched every piece of entertainment media in existence.

When you spend your time making shows that means you consume less media, not more.

Anything by Jhonen Vasquez. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. A show on Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and/or Invader Zim would be fantastic. Invader Zim would make a great one-off show, and you could do two on JtHM; one for introducing the concept, and a spoiler show for analyzing the whole comic.
