Worst Web-Comic Contest!

edited July 2011 in GeekNights
The thread on the episode about Worst Podcast Contest has been revived, and people seem to like it. The obvious idea is to do worst web-comic contest. In this thread post links to the worst web-comics you can find. We can then do an episode where we select the worst and give a prize to whoever submitted that one.

You can submit Penny Arcade for all I care. The decision will be entirely up to our collective subjective judgement.

Recall that in the Worst Podcast Contest, the eventual winner (if you can call it that) was not the worst quality objectively, but was the worst in terms of what the people involved should have been capable of and considering a sort of minimum bar. That one with the punk kids yelling unintelligibly was bad, but AP, while not as bad objectively, was "badder" per listener.

Maybe two winners. I mean, there's obviously some amazingly poorly done webcomic out there with like 2 readers. But there's also got to be a surprisingly popular comic that's 95% as bad, but somehow has a million readers.

In general, your entry should be so bad that it's notably bad. Something bad enough to where exploring just how bad it is is a sort of adventure, or a train wreck from which you just can't seem to look away no matter how much you want to.

I want a non-man to wake up the next morning and remember.

If we really wanted to we could come up with a scoring system or some individual awards. Worst art, worst story, least funny while trying to be funny, honorable mention, etc.

  • least funny while trying to be funny
Most funny when trying very hard to not be funny. ;^)
  • Ctrl-Alt-Del. I know it's cliche to hate on it, but he could be a fairly decent artist, if he had a good writer. Instead, everyone has the same face, terrible body structure, and terribly unfunny dialog. He wants so hard to be exactly what Penny Arcade is now (yes, including the Cons), but he falls short on every mark.
  • (yes, including the Cons)
How is that con working out? I'm curious. Also doesn't he do a charity drive as well?

The con is a depressing LAN party in a warehouse in Providence (I didn't go, some Goons snuck some cameras in). And yeah, he does some sort of charity thing, which I can't really make fun of him for, even if it's nowhere near Child's Play. A good dead done for a bad reason is still a good dead.
  • [insert links to any webcomic using game sprites as art with a mediocre/bad author self-insert]
  • some Goons snuck some cameras in
Are there no cameras allowed? WTF?

I probably won't factor in the creator's personality or community into my decision. We have to mostly focus on the quality of the comic itself. Perhaps the artists talent level, years of experience, and length of the comic will also be considered factors. It will be entirely subjective in the end, like Apples to Apples.
  • Are there no cameras allowed? WTF?
He also disallows DSes because "they fuck with the wireless network".
  • He also disallows DSes because one Linksys WRT can't handle the load.
    =P
  • The fact that Fred Gallagher does so little so badly and gets money at all is a constant annoyance.

Megatokyo Omnibus edition coming soon from Dark Horse. Not a joke.
  • Oh yeah, I forgot about MegaTokyo.

So do I, regularly, and it's IN MY RSS READER.
  • I would like to nominate Megatokyo for the Least Improved category, Better Days for Right Wing Furry Porn category, and Moon Over June for the WTF category.

You have to link the ones we never heard of.
  • Does bunnywith count as a webcomic? I don't think they're sequential art though.

Better Days for Right Wing Furry Porn sounds like a great name for something.

Just submit whatever and we will apply our subjective judgement.

Better Days for Right Wing Furry Porn category
Would you put Disney's Robin Hood also in that category? So the guy draws furry porn, so he draws animals with T&A;, Better days isn't bad. The art and story are good, and It isn't porn. It's also not the first to assign animal species to human groups, like Jews being mice, cats being Caucasians and hyenas being Afro-American or something to that extent. Apocalypse Meow comes to mind.

Bleedman. An example of okay fanfiction-y ideas gone wrong. One, two, and a lolitastic original.

Everything else I can think of is the worst of the best. As in Something Positive has the greatest worse people I ever seen in a webcomic. That what makes it awesome!

Wow, that guy's actually a really good artist.

I agree, but it his stories that have the problems to me.

I didn't really read any, but I can imagine. So, considering how bad the stories apparently are -- for purposes of this contest, does the good art make this webcomic better, or worse?
  • I'll nominate "Teh Gladiators". It's a WoW comic that started off an "eh" with weak writing and bad art (in my opinion) and never improved. It tries too hard to be zany/funny, with too many panels and too much crammed into each one, at that. On top of that it overuses text exposition (because the plots don't make sense), and even the art overuses motion lines and sound effects. I gave up on it, but still see it regularly on mmo-champion.com (which is very heavily trafficked) and it doesn't look like much has changed.

Viga, that last link is a real wtf.

We'll have an official submission form up some time tonight to kick off the contest in earnest.

I also note, as this is quite mean-spirited, that it's Scott's idea. =P

http://www.giselelagace.com/ (nws for some of the comics, beware)

This woman does at least 4 comics, all with an archie/anime art style that isn't done poorly. The art isn't the problem, its the cliche characters and the overarching theme, which is common to ALL the comics, that being "what if I'm gay? Am I gay? I might be gay. I'm not gay...this time. Or am I?" Another common theme is the teasing of a character who is then denied. Maybe its not shitty per-se, but it bears mentioning in the "sanity of the author" category. One person makes multiple comics, sometimes at the same time, about girls wondering if they are a lesbian and kissing, then deciding that they aren't, and about boys who want to have sex but are utterly unable to close the deal. I cant decide if its a compulsion or a conscious decision. Bizarre.

I'm sorry, but Scooby Doo Cerberus evoked side-splitting laughter from me for some reason.

Bob and George - that old Megaman sprite comic that it looks like everyone used to read way back in the day. Fights dragged on waaay too fucking long, if only to make a terrible one-liner for that day's comic. Sort of a funny concept at first - make fun of the robot masters of each game, but then the writer decided to go off and write plot into it. It barely made sense, there was an arc I remember that involved some sort of tournament, which took MONTHS to wrap up. The whole thing was so convoluted and hard-to-follow that, if I hadn't visited the site in a while, I would have to go back and read month-old comics just to figure out what the fuck was going on, even having read them before.

The comic ended a long-ass time ago, so depending on how you're setting up the contest, it may very well be ineligible. Still, there are my two cents on a comic that started okay, could have had potential, but just went south and stayed south for years until it ended.
