For the GI Bill. I'll be graduating from college this semester thanks to you and this wonderful bit of socialism. I owe my success to hard work, determination and social programs designed to give people a chance.

At first, I thought you just made a spelling mistake, but then I read this comment. Well fucking played.
  • Congrats! That's a huge accomplishment and I hope it serves you well.
  • Congratulations Desimos! And thank you. Big time, thank you.
  • I don't consider it socialism, more due compensation for your service to the country. ~_^ Congrats.

These guys pretty much summed it up. Thanks for serving, and thanks for learning.
  • Well, we did get paid for all our time when we where in. It's not like the GI Bill was the only thing I got. It was actually kind of a bonus.
  • It's a bonus you deserve.

  • I simply consider the GI bill to be an appropriate function of government.

There's a problem: Getting former soldiers applicable job skills after they leave government service (outside of their MOS).

There's a possible solution: University systems exist to provide applicable skills, and are tooled to allow those with discipline and motivation to become successful.

There's a barrier to the solution: Since enlisted personnel's pay is generally on the low end of the scale, they would not necessarily be able to afford tuition on savings alone.

The solution to the barrier: Provide money to veterans for tuition assistance, provided (I'm assuming, here) they maintain a steady level of academic achievement (like, for instance, passing classes).

    This.

    Can't it be both?

You didn't get paid enough. I am sure about that.

Agreed, it can be both. Also yes to ROE's note about appropriate function of government. The number of unemployed veterans is too damn high.

Isn't that what wages are for?
  • It's a bonus you deserve.
I'm not saying we don't deserve it. There are a ton of people out there that deserve better than what they have. The reality is that we don't need to have the GI Bill, but we do and that's a good thing. We should do more things like this for more people.
  • The important thing, really, is that we can all find a way to have a spirited debate. ;)

    Again, congratulations Desimos!
  • I think the GI bill was created in part due to the fact after WWI soldiers had been ripped off since the government couldn't properly compensate them, and they marched on Washington. I doubt anyone would want an army of angry hobos who know how to use guns going after them.

It was passed through legislation for the troops upon arriving home from WWII. The government had anticipated the need and proactively passed legislation prior to the need.
