Horrible Tragedy of Your Day

  • Look like ass compared to what? Also, I noticed you use Java. Java historically has had some shitty font rendering, especially on Mac, for whatever reason.
  • Not in Java, just in the OS itself. Things like right click menus on dock icons often render terribly, I've never figured out why.

Past this point, I've run out of things to argue, so I'll just make shit up.

Apple funds Al Qaeda and causes gingivitis.
  • Apple employees are all payed in crack on a project-by-project basis.
  • I was required to purchase a MBP for my degree program. The cost was spread through my tuition and heavily discounted due to the school program. My previous laptop was a Dell Inspiron 8200, so it was time for a new laptop. I've been happy with the experience. I spent years doing laptop repair and cursing plastic body laptops...
  • Not in Java, just in the OS itself. Things like right click menus on dock icons often render terribly, I've never figured out why.
Sounds like some weird glitch in your setup as I've never seen that behavior. Not doubting that you do see it... just that it doesn't seem to be common.

Anyway, my $450 Acer feels like a $450 laptop. As I said, I can't complain given how cheap it was, but with the rubber feet on the bottom falling off, the chargers falling apart, etc., the build quality is definitely lacking. It also seems to be hard to find replacement chargers for it. Every time I try, I seem to only find sketchy Chinese knock-offs that get so hot I'm worried about them catching on fire. At least Apple's chargers are easy enough to find, if pricey at $80 or so a pop.
  • AppleCare covers the chargers now, so you can get free replacements if you're still under warrantee. I never buy it for my other devices, but it's totally worth it for the laptop.

Why are we even having this discussion again? Nobody really"needs"a Mac these days, but there are a whole bunch of reasons to want one. What it really comes down to is whether you want the product and whether you are willing/able to pay the price for it. You don't need to justify it unless you're asking someone else to buy it for you.
  • AppleCare wasn't that helpful when my [then] puppy was going through her chewing stage and attacked my wife's (she has a MBP) charger. :P I do agree with you on getting AppleCare for laptops. For whatever reason, laptops get enough wear and tear that it is worth getting some extra protection for them.
  • Um yeah, your puppy chewing through the charger isn't exactly a defect in the product. But they do replace for the chronic issue of the end that connects to your computer deciding it doesn't want to work anymore.

FWIW, I have rarely had cause to need AppleCare on my actual laptop, and I drop those fuckers more than is reasonable. I also walk with them while they are running, put them on top of pillows, etc. I am not exactly easy on my machines, but the Macs take it way better than the Windows machines I've had. I still have the iBook I bought in college, and it works fine. It's just slow compared to new computers and doesn't run the new Mac software designed for the Intel chip. Pete has been using it as his go-to laptop when he needs one.
  • True... My wife did have them replace her charger for free once specifically when the end didn't want to connect to the computer anymore. That was good. :)

I actually went with an el-cheapo PC laptop when my old iBook died (it was way past warranty at the time), but it was because fixing it would've cost the same as a new PC laptop and I wanted a PC machine around the house anyway. It turns out this was very important for my wife since, even though she does all her work on a Mac, she did need a Windows machine to test websites on for some of her webdesign clients.
  • A group of twenty somethings trying to justify a 25-30% price premium because of a magnetic power coupling is a fun thing to observe...
I'm not trying to justify anything. I use my laptop on a daily basis, travel 200 days a year, do massive video editing projects, loads of photo editing, sound recording and music mixing, and many more computing intensive projects. I paid over €3,000 for my MacBook Pro, and don't regret it one bit. Saving money wasn't even a consideration. To get the same standard of product with adequate specs in a non-MacBook package was, at the time, impossible. There just wasn't a comparable product.

Augh, I am too late and I missed a another feminism flame war! Dang!
How good feminism actually works: "Women can do what they want with their bodies and be in porn and give blowjobs and be transwomen and still have rights and wages equal to men and that's a beautiful thing."
Well, hmm. So here is the thing, I think I have talked about my ideas about sex and porn on the forum a bunch of times before, so I don't need to reiterate it. Basically, the idea of sex and sex-art is great, but the culture surrounding it is still tied up in these fucked up gender roles. I don't think that every decision a woman makes is a feminist decision nor always helps further the cause of a fair world. However! I would never, ever advocate denying them whatever free agency they may possess to make decisions about themselves that I don't agree with or think are progressive. It's kind of like how since I believe in free speech, I need to let everyone have their say but I can still argue with them and fight their ideas. One must tolerate, but not necessarily agree.

Think of any social group, whether it is something that you are voluntarily included in or not, as something you have a slight amount of power to steer through your memes and your decisions as an individual. People want to always draw the line between individual and group, but that isn't the case. The perception of individuals shape the group and the perception of the group shapes the experiences of the individuals in it. By making choices, using your free speech, and spreading your ideas, you can push with your little force, guiding culture in a certain direction.

Feminism, for me, is like the Democratic Party. Democrats are very different across the board. I don't agree with all the things the party does, and I don't believe that they represent the totality of my political beliefs, which have been formed over a life of experience and learning. There are even some democrats I think are really No Good. BUT! To get stuff done, I still join the group and push it the best I can.

    1. I believe that women are, as a group, currently at a disadvantage when compared to men. They are viewed as a class of people subservient to men's needs, sexual and otherwise, and that these inequalities pervade much of our society to the point that we don't notice most of them or accept them as the status quo. Sweeping changes have to happen at the deepest levels for there to be a truly fair society. (This is what people mean when they talk about the patriarchy.)
    2. I think that gender and biological sex are different things and I want gender as a grouping concept to go away. Sex should be like any other scientific measure of a person's genetic code.

Do you agree with those two things? If so you basically agree with the ideas at the core of radical feminism! Imagine that!

It kinda does in an bass-ackwards sort of way.

Basically, if you want to feed the contents of C:\CAVE\BATMAN.TXT to GPUPDATE, you'd do something like this:

    GET-CONTENT C:\CAVE\BATMAN.TXT | GPUPDATE /FORCE

Yeah, `type filename.sql | mysql -u root anus` also gets the job done, but it definitely threw me for a loop, and was simultaneously super unimpressive. EDIT: thanks for the heads up on get-content too.

  • The moral is to not use Windows for this stuff.
  • Pipes FTW
  • I didn't know sql had an anus.

That has to be the worst programming koan I've ever read.

Truer words, my friend. Sadly we don't yet have a proper Linux DB host for Stage, so until we do we're hosting MySQL on the same server as the App, which tragically runs on Windows Server.

EDIT this is the real tragedy.

  • That sucks. Also, welcome to my world of providing software to emerging markets. You're lucky if their central server is running Windows XP...
  • I didn't know sql had an anus.
Only MySQL, and it's easy to confuse it with the entirety of MySQL

Eh, we got one on production finally, so it's hard to be too mad.

Yeah man, back when I was at AMD I remember having to spend a week getting something working in XP/IE6 for our team in Bangalore. Of course now it's just troubleshooting for dudes running WinXP on GTX690's for whatever reason ...

Beat to death with baby dolls?
  • I think he deserves a life sentence without the possibility of parole. My response would have been more expeditious if not for the overwhelming sensation the he needed to be beat to death. One of the many reason I could never be a police officer is that I lack the restraint necessary to prevent myself from killing that man on sight. As a parent I have no idea how I would handle this situation but it would likely end with me doing something terrible. For the sake of the man's safety they should put him in a minimum security prison or he will likely be killed.
  • Busty Girl Comics is stopping! NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I think he deserves a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
    Why no possibility of parole?
  • Phone died in a very random way. A had in on bluetooth settings so I could listen while I was shopping, and when it started ringing, I hit the power button...and doing that somehow caused the entire phone to COMPLETELY RESET.

It has all the data, but everything personal was just completely gone. And it just came from pressing the power button (which takes it out of rest/sleep). And reseting it again actually got it to work again, but not he has no idea how to recognize the battery life it's just...wow, this is such a bizarre form of phone seppuku.
  • Why no possibility of parole?
I should probably qualify that a little. If the baby survives he may deserve a chance at parole down the road but if the baby does not then he should be unable to receive it.
  • Life sentence without parole regardless of the recovery of the baby or not. Death sentence if we had a judicial system that wasn't so incompetent and corrupt, but since we do, I'd settle for life in jail.
