There's nowhere that the article suggests they're actually tapping Google data behind the SSL frontend, though - and while they mention tapping transatlantic fiber traffic, none of that would be unencrypted.
And the header image for the article is basically the standard way a high-traffic web site works; there's nothing remotely surprising or "secret" about it.

  • The NSA has backdoors by design into the level of encryption employed by SSL. That was publicized well ahead of this.

The only "potential backdoor" that has any credibility to it is in a non-default pseudorandom number generator that nobody actually uses.

  • That's flat out incorrect, but I haven't got time or inclination to debate it properly tonight.

    That's flat-out incorrect, but neither do I.
Well, a one-line response for now: They almost certainly haven't subverted OpenSSL.

    This is my favorite argument.

Unencrypted data is tapped as it passes between Google datacenters on their "internal" WAN.

... how do you know this?

I simply googled it. Not recently though.

I don't remember. It was about 8 years ago.

I would have less trouble believing that they have a tap on unencrypted Google links if they actually, y'know, published any of the evidence that the NSA has taps on unencrypted Google links.
  • My take is that whether there's strong evidence for this or not (and I agree it could maybe be stronger), the NSA is already proven to be an agency in strong need of reigning in and reforming, so it makes little difference.
  • Are you sure this wasn't just Act I of a porno?

I just found out about japanese invisible man during work porn, I think at this point I'll believe anything.

  • My wife's cousin made a Pinterest-type Facebook post where she was showing off how she made this great organizing system where she uses a bulletin board to hold up all of her bills and arrange them in the order they are due.

    1) WTF. Pay your fucking bills as soon as they come in.

    2) That's only if you can't set that shit on autopay. Do it.

    3) Paper bills? Who the fuck still gets those?

    4) Thanks for the pic of your address and all of your account numbers.

When using anchors (the <a> tag), we use href, not src. Src is short for source. IE, the origin point. Links go outwards, they are REFerences.

It's nice when you've got some rubber between you and the road and you can pay bills the day they arrive or not worry about them being on autopay, but probably more than half of America is not in that boat.
  • I sure as hell ain't.

  • I'm split. On the one hand, the last time they surrendered some of their autonomy to a union of nations, it turned out pretty terrible for them. On the other hand, that last time is actually what they're invoking on the right, so I don't understand what they're afraid of if they liked that.

I mean c'mon, it's all right there, Greg.

    Free money!

If that ISN'T thermal paste, I'd hate to imagine what it could be.
