Cloverfield Movie

edited November 2007 in Movies
So you know that teaser trailer before the Transformers movie showing the college kids at a party in NY, then explosions and a monster roar? Well, it is now known the movie is called Cloverfield.

There's a new trailer out for it Cloverfield

There has been speculation over the internet, that the creature in the movie is Cthulu. Although the presentation so far in the teaser and trailer have perked my interest, this speculation about the "destroyer" being Cthulu has made me sit up even straighter. I never read H.P. Lovecraft, so I don't know much about it, but based on the trailers, do you guys think this movie could be based off the Cthulu story?

I saw the trailer in the theatre the other day. If the movie was about Cthulhu, I'd expect to see cultists. It's not Cthulhu, but it does look awesome.

    Here's the recent Cthulhu movie.

  • Here is the original short story The Call of Cthulhu. Read it if you haven't already, and if you dare.

    That. Looks. Awesome!
Cloverfield I mean. The Cthulhu trailer doesn't look that exciting. Either way, I Am Legend is coming out sooner.
    and if you dare.
It's not that bad. It's awesome even.

So do you think by the Cthulhu trailer, it is accurate to the story? Also, should I read the book prior to the movie, or wait until after?

This particular movie seems to be a combination of several Lovecraft stories. There have been several movies in the past based on Lovecraft stories, but I haven't seen any of them. Here's a list I found.

To my knowledge, there has never been a worthy Cthulhu movie. I wouldn't expect this one to be amazing, either, although it very well could be. I say read a bunch of the stories, not just Call of Cthulhu since, even though it's his most well-known work, it's definitely not the best. I like At The Mountains of Madness and The Dunwich Horror.

Also might want to check out the GeekNights episode on Lovecraft.

  • I really hope they just don't reveal the monster at all. I always find that, when I'm watching a movie, once I see the monster, or killer, or whoever, I just stop being scared. That's why the film Se7en was so scary for me; every time John Doe killed someone, I only saw the corpse, weapon, etc. but not the actual killing. My imagination can think up creepier things than a film can show me.

Also a clever method for circumventing rating systems. I wonder if anyone has tried making porn this way.

Isn't that kind of what softcore stuff tries to do?
  • I was thinking of having say the camera from the view of one of the people having sex pointing at something very normal but moving in the right way with suggestive dialog.
  • Just in case anyone gets any ideas about speculating that the monster will be some other known figure like Godzilla or King Kong, J.J. Abrams has stated that this will be an entirely new creation:
    J. J. Abrams conceived of a new monster after he and his son visited a toy store in Japan. He explained, "We saw all these Godzilla toys, and I thought, we need our own monster, and not King Kong, King Kong's adorable. I wanted something that was just insane and intense."
So we may get a monster that's similar to Godzilla, but still unique. That's a tall order (no pun intended), setting out to make a new American monster that would be on par with Godzilla. Respect to the man who's trying, though we'll have to wait and see how successfully it turns out in the end.

There is a porn site that has videos showing only women's faces while they are getting off.

To be fair, it's men, too.

    I did not know that.
