  • Rym, take it to a new thread and I'll talk more about this. Only thing I WILL say is that if an ISP was found to be throttling Google on purpose (or blocking Google) they would find themselves in court very fast.
You know you can make a new thread, right?
  • Hey, I was talking to Rym!

    Hi all,

My name is Kidd (really) and just turned 21 about a month and a half ago. I'm currently studying Aerospace Engineering (MEng) at the University of Manchester, UK.
I was the Geekback in GeekNights:060718 when I did a review on Time Crisis 4 and House of the Dead 4. Thanks for the fast Geekback guys (Rym and Scott)! ^_^ I think I discovered GeekNights when they were featured on an AnimeWorldOrder episode. IMO, GeekNights has the cleanest and most audible sound out of A LOT of podcasts (especially dealing with things of geekery, like anime and games) and you guys are just plain funny.

I consider myself to be quite musically talented, although it has been a while since I last played a real song on the piano, or even touched a set of drums (I intend to fix this by learning some Joe Hisashi songs: composer behind many Ghibli songs). Obviously my first language is English (I hope it's obvious...), and I have a fairly decent grasp of Chinese (Putong Hua and GuangDong Hua)... well actually, despite being Chinese in origin, my actual skills in the language are primary school-level at best -_-'. However I like to think I make up for it with my charm and musical abilities.

I'm a mega fan of Kiyohiko Azuma's work (Azumanga Daioh) and have recently discovered a real gem of a manga called Yotsuba&! which features the antics of a little girl, with a striking resemblance to Chiyo-chan but much much more mischievous. I really enjoy wacky comedy anime, such as School Rumble, Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu, FLCL and of course Azumanga Daioh, but I generally like to watch anything that can keep me interested for more than 5 episodes and has either decent animation or uses unconventional character and background designs (I highly recommend "Noein" for the sci-fi fans).

I have aspirations to become either a pirate or a ninja... or a ninja pirate.

  • Hello, I'm Symmetry. I don't any potential empoyers to get to stuff I say on webboards too easily, so all I'll say is that my first name is Andrew and that my last name ends in "ough" and begins with "Cl". I graduated from MIT with a degree an EECS degree and I'm trying to finish up my master's thesis here now "Increasing Adder Efficiency by Exploiting Input Statistics."

I'm a geek. I read a lot of SF and I've been an officer at the MIT Science Fiction Society for most of my time here and I plan to keeping helping to hold the library open long after I graduate. I also watch anime, both DVDs and fansubs, and I'm a big AMV fan. In fact, Im working on my own right now and I'll post a YouTube link to it for criticism here before I upload it to AMV.org. That'll be a while though.

I do a fair amount of roleplaying, right now I'm in a serious GURPs campaign and a beer and pretzels Earthdawn campaign and I enjoy talking/argueing about the theory and practice of what makes a good RPG. Computer gaming wise, I'm a recovering CounterStrike addict and I tend to play a lot of strategy games. And I'm going to buy Oblivion just as soon as I finish my thesis.

    Hello everybody.
  • Hey I'm Vinnie. I live in Hudson County, New Jersey. I'm 16 and in High School. I watch anime and read manga and all that good stuff. I play DnD and want to do some other pen and paperstuff but it seems that DnD is the only one that people play in my area. I have never seen Rym or Scott and known it was them (may have seen them at AnimeNEXT and not known it).
  • Hi my name is Ryan. I live in NY. I'm 12. I barley sleep and my only true interests consist of football, computers, anime, manga, and video games.
  • I'm Erin, one of the two ninja consultants of the Ninja Consultant podcast. I work in animation. I live in NYC. I'm older than both Rym and Scott, but younger than 30.

    Favorite drink: Whiskey sour
    First Anime: Voltron
Firt time I knew it was Anime: Sailor Moon
Hooked as a fan forever: Kare Kano
Best Movie Ever Made: Apocolypse Now
My Favorite Movie Ever: Monty Python and the Holy Grail
I found out about your podcast: Because of Anime World Order
  • My name is Susan, but most of my work online is posted under Ayame. I'm 31 and have 2 kids. I'm a freelance artist of fantasy-based art and I stay at home with my kids. My daughter is autistic. My husband is in the military and is currently serving in Korea. I discovered the podcast while searching for anime podcasts to listen to while I work. I really enjoy the podcast a lot. It's fun to listen to even if I don't understand all the tech stuff. My favorite anime is probably Samurai 7, but I also like Bleach. I read a lot of yaoi and shonen ai manga.

I live in El Paso, TX. I think I'm more of a nerd than a geek, but you know, whatever. ;)
  • Hello, My name is Jake. I live in Tokyo, Japan teaching English. I'm from Seattle. I'm 26. I love music and videogames.

I like to listen to podcasts about games, etc. I came across the Hero Quest (most recent) one and thought it was rad. I used to play the hell out of that game and listening to it being talked about brought back a flood of good memories.
  • Hey Jake, my friends want to go teach English in Japan, is it worth the large sums of monies?

The money is ok. But you really have to want to live in Japan. Too many people come over here, don't learn the language, and go away from the experience not gaining anything.

I'd say it's worth doing if you want to learn about Japan.

Teaching English is really the only option to stay in Japan long term. (The other is studying.. but usually the visa runs out in a year or two.)

I definitely recommend your friends check it out. Thinking about and studying Japan is completely different from living here, getting used to everything here, and then finally settling down here...

I'm sure they could bring you back lots of cool Japanese stuff... but they might not come back! If you're an otaku fan boy, it's a black hole of never-ending cool shit to get into.

  • Hey everyone. I'm Lindsey. I was on the show for the Otakon interviews who sounded like such a dork when I said the first ever anime I saw was Dragon Ball Z. But that's all behind us (I hope). I'm an anime junky, though I'm just getting back into the swing of things and I have to fit it between homework assignments. Anyway, I'll be popping up here and there, making weird comments when I can!
  • Ha! Thought that SN looked familiar. Hey Linds, welcome to the fold.
  • Hi everybody, my name is Chris. I'm 23, and I am currently a applied technology education major. I will be teaching both shop and pre-engineering type classes. I was a computer engineering major for a while but I decided I wanted to work with kids. I have been into anime and board games since middle school. I have not been very active in either recently, due to time restrictions (there just aren't enough hours in a day). I am Linux and now mac user. I guess that's about everything.

    Favorite anime:
Ghost in the Shell/GitS: Stand alone complex

    Favorite board game:
    Risk
    Settlers of Catan

    Current Computer:
MacBook with 2ghz Processor and 2 gigs of ram

Hey, I'm Nana. I recently stumbled upon GeekNights on iTunes when I was looking up different anime related podcasts and so far it's the only one I've found worth to keep listening to.

I'm currently a 2nd year bioengineering undergraduate in London, but I only came here recently for uni. I was born in China and grew up in Sweden. Technically I could put a dot in Sweden on the frappr map for you since I don't think you've got anyone in there yet. ^^

I don't think I qualify as a complete geek since I don't know what half of the rants are about, but I still find the news and the quarreling really amusing, the Things of the Day in particular!

If I'm any kind of geek it'd probably be an anime/manga geek, although I only started watching anime after I started drawing and only read my first manga about a year after that.

I'm a bit of an aspiring artist although I'm a bit concerned about how my degree will interfere with my art right now... or the other way around.

I just want to say that you guys are doing an awesome job showing this kind of committment to the program, four times a week! Keep it up!

  • I've been trolling these forums long enough so I suppose it's time I actually post in this thread. My name is Jason. I'm 23 years old. I live in Cincinnati, Ohio and work as Programmer. I've been listening to the podcast since Janurary when I was looking for something to kill time at work. I went to college for a year and keep saying "I'll go back." I don't read manga because I'm too busy reading comics (bit of a DC fanboy) but I watch ALOT of anime. I'm a pretty well rounded geek.

Favorite Movie: Changes every week... Right now it's Seven Samurai
    Favorite Comic: DMZ
    Favorite Anime: Serial Expierments: Lain
    Favorite Video Game: Super Metroid

It looks like those ninja consultants started the trend. Damn them! There's not much we can do about it, they get paid more than ordinary ninjas.

Hello I'm Eric, a 22 year old Accounting major and the librarian for my university's Anime Club. I'm really only an anime geek, though listening to Geek Nights has helped me better understand what all the comp sci and engineering guys in the club are talking about. Have Rym and Scott ever done a show about how to properly run an anime club? I'd love to pick their brains and get some ideas (:

I ran the largest anime club in the US for three years. We talk about it from time to time, and we're planning a comprehensive series on how to do it sometime in the future.

You could also catch us doing panels about just that topic at Otakon, Katsucon, Animazement, Connecticon, etc...

    Stay tuned ^_^
  • Hello there. I have adopted the internet persona of Rooster because of the Alice in Chains song of the same name (serves as a good gamertag, with one line of the song saying "You know he ain't gonna die". Hasn't worked yet, but maybe that's because I are suck at Counterstrike.) I am an anime fan/gamer/Texan/Republican/Star Wars RPer (and hoping to GM a campaign over winter break) who is of the opinion that Ender's Game is some of the best Sci-fi ever written.

Also, I'm going to be up front with all of you. I am a Christian. I know that some of you (if not most of you) hold beliefs opposite of mine, and I am alright with that. I am not here to ask anyone to tone down their hate for my kind simply because I'm here (I'm told to expect it) and I'm not asking anyone to change their beliefs. I'm just here because I found the podcast and think this is a pretty cool place. If you guys will let me, I would be more than happy to take part in this community, but if you don't want my kind here, I'm cool with that (it's not like I'd stop listening to the podcast, because Rym and Scott are awesome). And don't worry, if you guys let me hang around, I won't try to convert anybody or get all religious on you.

Alright. As I said in the music taste post, I'm a die-hard metallica fan. I'm currently studying philosophy and hope one day to create the greatest anime of all time ("Yeah, get in line, buddy"). If that doesn't pan out, I'll at least have some cool novels written.

Oh, and Claveman and Red vs. Blue are awesome.

Um...Names Imani, go by Yoshima sometime. Its an old in joke started by a friend of mine. I'm in High School. Want to be a writer. Love anime and ORPG's. I'm an obsessive blogger. I write really bad porn (I'm not joking). I tend to be extremely pervy at times. If I could do anything, I'd be ruler of the world and follow Peters Top 100 things to do if I ever become an evil overlord so not to be overthrown. I'm really into fanfiction mostly Harry Potter and Buffy. I have a thing for blonds, and don't always listen to my podcasts till months after they come out. I can be called emo and have been more times than I care to count; I'm some what insulted by that description of myself but whatever.

I hate Myspace and love LiveJournal. I think Mario's the shit and Zelda should rule the world. I can't watch Bleach cause it annoys me but will read the manga. I love Death Note and Hikaru No Go. My first anime was...Sailor Moon and I wish oh how I wish I owned the manga. And...thats about it folks. Oh yeah, and I hardly ever post on forums, but when I do it's, in my opinion, usually something profound. And I like big words and the SAT vocabulary book, but I can't spell for shit, which is kinda sad.

I don't think many people here would actually try to run you out of town, so to speak, for your views. I imagine people would become hostile if there was a genuine attempt at proselytising, but as you've said you aren't interested in that, and as you don't appear to be a complete arse, I'm sure things will be fine. Welcome to the forum!
