Tentative 2008 GeekNights Otakon Schedule

edited July 2008 in Conventions
The very tentative schedule for Otakon 2008 is posted in the members only area. If you have ever been a member of Otakon, and you know your member ID, you can login and check it out. Here are the events I'm pretty sure belong to us. Don't rely on this schedule in any way. Always trust the schedule you get at the convention, and the schedules posted outside of the rooms themselves, and what the information desk says. Those will always be the most accurate.

These are the Rym+Scott panels.

Friday 12pm-1pm - panel 1 - Anime You Should See
Friday 3pm-4pm - wkshp 1 - Comics for the Manga Reader
Friday 8pm-9pm - panel 3 - Know Your Creators
Saturday 10am-11am - wkshp 2 - Advance Wars

I'm 99% sure this is Katsu's panel.

Sunday 1pm - 2pm - wkshp 1 - Kendo: Way of the Sword

Go see our friends at this panel.

Saturday 1pm-2pm - panel 2 - Applegeeks

I don't know who is running this panel, but it isn't us. We'll be coming in the room as they leave, so I'm sure we'll meet them.

Friday 12pm-3pm - wkshp 1 - Podcasting for Dummies

Also, after looking through the schedule, there are a few panels that looked pretty cool. Think of these as my personal picks based solely on the name of the panel. I'm not going to bother putting in the times, rooms, or days for these

1) Anime is Serious Business: Budgets, Scheduling, and Corporate Interaction in Production (I hope this has a smart person running it)
2) Building Upon Crunchyroll (I wonder if the actual Crunchyroll people will be there. We can totally grill them!)
3) Satoshi Kon Fan Panel (Will probably be meh panel, but it's Satoshi Kon, so...)
4) OC Remix Panel (always a fun one, with live music)
5) ADV Announcements (expect awesomely bad news!)
6) Bandai Surprise (expect awesomely somewhat good news!)

  • What about the JAM Project concert? I have not seen information on it yet.
  • They haven't actually released even a tentative schedule on the website yet, that will probably be released this week.

I didn't look. I only looked at panels. They are having a Q&A; panel, so they are definitely going to be there.

    Way to not read.

Try watching it with a bunch of friends at 2-3 in the morning, and then walking back to your dorm by yourself after. Believe me, that was fun! :P

Learn to use the find-in-page function of your web browser. In Firefox just push /. Then type in anime you should see into the box that appears.

Podcasting for Dummies may or may not be Tee Morris, the co-author of the book of the same name who runs panels like that at lots of cons around here.

  • The Otakon schedule pdf is now available at otakon.com.
  • Here are the ultra-violent live action movies for this year.

First at 10:30pm Friday is Bohachi Bushido. IMDB makes this sound like a winner.
Right after that at midnight Friday is Tokyo Gore Police. I think we can pass on this one.
On Saturday at 10:30 they're showing Sukeban Boy. This sounds more like softcore porn than ultra-violence, so meh.
Then at midnight Saturday, you've already seen the trailer, they're showing Machine Girl!

I found it meh. I've been to the one at Anime USA. The guy is cool though.

BTW! Geeknights meet up happening this year?

  • Hey, Uncle Yo and I are doing our decade-old-anime panel again. 2-3 on Saturday, pretty good time slot I'll say. We basically talk about how anime went from niche to mainstream around the turn of the century. Come see us, we like audience participation!

I'm sure we can probably swing it if we dodge FRC panel times. I suppose the best place to meet up will be in Artist Alley, as many (but not all) members of the FRC will be set up in a big row there. I believe that everyone will be set up near the entrance of A.A., but if you don't see the Geek Nights table in front, browse around a bit. Rym, Scott: do you have a preference for an informal meet-up time?

We're going to schedule it once we get a chance to put our own schedule together: probably tonight.

They've been doing some heavy construction at the corner of Pratt and Howard streets this week. They say it'll be finished by Friday. I hope so - there are home baseball games this weekend too.

Why put anyone against JAM Project in an anime convention? :S
  • Why put anyone against JAM Project in an anime convention? :S
There are 20,000+ people. Not all of them want to go to the concert. Some of them want something to do.
  • In case people didn't know, Otakon is actually going to sell badges at the door this year, until they sell out. As you may know, they no longer have single day passes. You're either in, or you're out. If you buy a badge at the door Friday or Saturday, it will cost $65. However, you can buy a badge at the door on Sunday for a measly $25. There aren't many events Sunday, but there will be Katsu's Kendo panel. You'll also be able to get into the artist's alley, dealer's room, video game room, closing ceremonies, etc.

If you live very close to the convention, but aren't going because it isn't worth that much to you, I highly suggest you go Sunday only. The price is low, and you'll get your money's worth. You also won't kill your entire weekend on it.

This, of course, assumes they don't sell out of badges. I highly doubt they will, so don't worry about that so much.
  • They won't sell out of badges. There's no attendance cap, like there was in 05 and 06.
  • Reportedly the soldier who famously camped out in pre-reg last year then shipped out to Iraq is back. Got there at midnight last night with his army cot. Really. DUDE.

Really? Have to go see him tomorrow.

I'm working from home today and tomorrow. I walked the girls by the Convention Center this morning on the way to the Inner Harbor. I saw quite a few people already lined up outside the Convention Center. One seat away from the very front, I saw this guy dressed in BDU's. I guess that's the soldier guy.

The weather promises to be good this weekend and there are home baseball games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so the area around the Convention Center is going to be very, very, crowded.

Hope he actually gets to go. When I get my badge I'll say hi to him.
  • I think my friend and I get the prize for most pretenious panel name, "your definitive anime." I don't know who came up with it, but it wasn't me.
