GeekNights Wednesday - Ore Monogatari!!

Ore Monogatari!! (My Love Story!!) (俺物語!!) is the topic of tonight's GeekNights. It's a fun show that breaks from the typical path for this sort of thing. Parts of it remind us of Here is Greenwood. Definitely a show to finish. Based on the manga by Kazune Kawahara. In other news, it's the 30th anniversary of Studio Ghibli! Anime Next is moving to Atlantic City for 2016! Beach con! The CBLDF still matters, as this adult women is deeply afraid of assigned comic reading in here college English classes.

  • If I were that professor, I would assign Oglaf just to spite her.
  • But... but... it's only Tuesday!
  • Fuck, guys, I just woke up from a nap and you had me all confused about what day it was.
  • It's not on the RSS feed yet, therefore it doesn't exist.
  • The illusion is broken tho

I guess the system posted the forum and tweet too soon. The episode will be live tomorrow.

If you want to go to a tiny con that only has 2000 attendees in the freezing cold of January, go to Otakon Vegas.

  • And heck, I'll still play all the Utena/Slayers/Pokémon/Escaflowne/Gundam Wing dance remixes you can handle...

Vegas is absolutely not freezing cold in January.

  • Enough to make you wear a lot of warm clothes... We can get as low as 18 degrees here.
  • My parents live in St. George, and while it has snowed there and had the ground freeze, I was under the impression that that was adverse weather.
  • It's been a weird year for weather. Triple digits finally hit last week. We were getting February weather in May still.
  • Good luck getting a train to Atlantic City. It only runs from Philly. NYC has to bus it.

AC is not nearly as bad as its reputation. Recent news and people's default stance of shifting on NJ only add fuel to the fire. AC got really bad when Vegas flights got cheap, but had a big second coming starting in the late 90s, lasting about, 15 years. Most of what has closed recently is stuff they built in the past 5 years, when they tried to push it too far. Everything they built from 1995-2010 is still around. Lots of nice restaurants and shops, cleaner boardwalks, renovated hotels and casinos, etc. The hard times that have befallen it now are due to PA, DE, and NY embracing gambling and even sports betting.

If you wind up in AC, eat at The Knife & Fork.
  • What I love about this series is that Gōda is very much the hero and not the butt of the joke. In most of these animes where the protagonist's defining feature is their height, weight, eyes, hair, etc...they make the entire show's comedy or character development revolve around that single trait. This show really pushes past the regular standards. His friends love him, people as a whole love his spirit and attitude, and his reactions to Yamato's expressions really humanize him.
  • Altantic City is fine, but I see no point in going there instead of any of the other Jersey beaches since they all have the advantage of not being attached to a city.
  • The idea that the cliche love storyline is immediately resolved reminds me of the second season of Hemlock Grove. There's a love triangle for part of the season and you think its going to be some big thing like it always is and they resolve it in the most chill way.

I've actually never met a person who has been to the beach in Atlantic City. Do people travel there for the beach?

Where I live obviously plays into it a lot. I live 20 minutes from nice beaches, so people really only head down to AC for gambling, shows, fancy food, outlet shopping. I haven't actually been there myself in quite a while now since I live closer to NYC. When I was only an hour from AC, we'd go down all the time when there was a big name comedian or a good concert.

If Anime Boston had a beach next to it, I'd be a lot happier there.

I got the game train ready to move to any destination.

Purchased the first 4 volumes of the manga and read the first one so far. Also watched the first 3 episodes. The show is spot on with the manga and both are great.

I mentioned this when recording ATW9K and Omar ended up watching all the available episodes in one night. Loving his fanart: https://www.facebook.com/omar.hernandez.52056/timeline/story?ut=43&wstart=0&wend=1435733999&hash=5913201162286259516&pagefilter=3&pnref=story

I love Takeo's overreactions and expressions. Reading the manga, I read some of the artist's (Aruko) notes and how he/she loved making the same facial expressions when drawing Takeo. It's been a while since I've had some good shoujo to read.

  • As much as I still love the show for being unapologetically sweet and sappy, I am sort of at that point where I want the Takeo and Yamato to kiss. They have already admitted their feelings and they are over several initial romantic humps of doubt and attraction...I just hope we get a kiss before the finale.

The next episode is "My Christmas!" so I'm hoping for a push.
  • Patience. Read the manga.
  • Guess what? The anime ended and it was really amazing. Just when you think the story or romance is about to step into tired territory, it leaps into greatness. The author really knew how to take a step back and go "No, these are real, nice people and they are going to handle the situation that way." Outstanding show.

I think this is my favorite romcom of the medium.
