Your Top Video Games of All Time

GameFAQs is having a best games ever showdown thingy. There are 128 games on the list. Someone made a little website with a tool to help you rank the games for yourself. You just click whichever game you like more, or click in the middle if they are equal.

4 Tetris
6 Portal 2
6 Super Mario World
6 Castlevania: SOTN

  • This didn't really work for me. I think it's let down by me not having played most of the games, and no "undo" function when I accidentally miss-click an option.

    1 Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    2 GoldenEye 007
    3 Super Mario Bros. 3
    4 Super Mario 64
    5 Team Fortress 2
    6 Super Mario Galaxy
    7 Minecraft
    8 Metal Gear Solid

At that point it starts listing games I've never played. Meanwhile, Half-Life should be way up there, and above Half-Life 2 (which is higher in the "sorted" list and it should be lower), Perfect Dark seemed to miss its spot, and Portal is down at 28 along with loads of games I've not played. And Tetris? How is that not way up there? Team Fortress 2 is only so high up because I've played it, and it was on the list.

That said, those N64 titles were right in my sweet spot when it came to having time for gaming (university). Ocarina of Time, GoldenEye, Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 are some of my all time favorites. Super Mario Bros should be on there too.

I'd add to that list some of my most played FPS games like Unreal Tournament, Counter Strike (various versions), and Natural Selection.

    Also: Desert Golfing.
  • @apreche Where's Mega Man 2?
  • A lot of games are missing.

    My top three are...

    1. Valkyria Chronicles
    2. Perfect Dark
    3. Mass Effect 3

I'm not going to post my full list because it will just be a Scottfest in this thread and nobody needs that.

  • Yeah, games that are missing is because they aren't in the original GameFAQs thing that the tool was designed to help with. So Tribes 2 and Mega Man 2 not being in there is because they don't make the cut in the GameFAQs community.

    1 Chrono Trigger
    2 Portal
    3 Half-Life
    4 Skies of Arcadia
5 Zelda: A Link to the Past

    7 Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    8 Super Metroid
    9 Half-Life 2
    10 Paper Mario: TYD
    11 Dragon Age: Origins
    12 Planescape: Torment
    13 Super Mario RPG
    14 Paper Mario
    15 Monster Hunter 4U
    16 Fallout 3
    17 Super Mario 64
    18 Metroid Prime
    19 Skyrim
    20 Diablo II

It seems pretty accurate to me.

  • Also, which Deus Ex? Do they mean Human Revolution, or the original?
  • I assumed they meant the original, since they had other series games specifically called out.

I'm also a bit shocked that my taste is apparently radically different most other people here. Just more quantifiable data proving I'm just fucking weird.

    That's not radically different.
  • I have not played 80% of these games. My top 20 is more of a "I have played these games" list.
  • edited November 2015
    My analysis:
    • Undertale is so high because it might as well have been made for me on commission. I don't expect other people to put it that high.
    • I prefer 3D Mario to 2D Mario. Mario 64 may be too high on this list.
    • Popular things I don't actually like very much: Bioware RPGs, Pokemon.
    • It is a crime that Mega Man X is on the ballot and Mega Man 2/3/9 are not. MM9 would have been in my top 10.
    • It is also a crime that three GTA games and RDR are on the ballot and Bully is not. It would have been in my top 20.
    • It is also also a crime that Halo, CoD, and RE4 make a showing but Gears of War does not. It would have
      been in my top 20.
    • The list has DQ8, but no DQ4/5. Dragon Quest 4 would have been in my top 20.
    • I am a weeb.

  • Everyone who put Half-Life 2 above Half-Life is wrong.

I've never played it. Watching play throughs though, doesn't seem like anything special. *shrugs*
  • You punk kids really don't understand how revolutionary Half-Life 1 was. Up until Half-Life all single-player fpses were like Doom. You had to find your way around a maze, kill a ton of dudes, dodge a ton of dudes trying to kill you, find the exit. The most advanced out there in terms of single player was was Goldeneye.

Half-Life changed the single player fps as much as Mario 64 changed the platformer and Street Fighter II changed the fighting game.

Half-Life 2 is great, but it's just an evolution. It's the same thing Half-Life already did with newer graphics plus physics.
  • I'm sure it was revolutionary, from what everyone seems to be saying about it. I guess you had to be there when it was happening.

My first legit PC game was GTA 3, so I was quite behind in terms of game lineage. Doesn't mean I didn't or don't appreciate the advancements in game design.

In context of what games are available now to play, how does Half Life compare? Does it hold up?

Will Half life 3 teach the industry what they're doing wrong?

or Half life 3 = no single player + hats
  • Half-life is still better than all the single player fps I have played since. The same way that all the imitators couldn't make a 3D platformer better than Mario 64.
  • edited November 2015
Half-Life 2 is superior as an FPS and general action game.

Half-Life, however, was a seamless integration of action and plot, and no game to-date (that I have ever played) has surpassed its integration of story and mechanics.

Actually, Portal did a pretty good job of that too, but HL did it first, so props.

So I put Half-Life above HL2 not because it's a superior FPS, but because it's a superior gaming experience.

I feel similarly about Diablo and Diablo II. D2 was the technically superior implementation of the core mechanics, but D1 nailed the atmosphere beautifully, and the comparatively simpler gameplay lent itself to that atmosphere very well.

  • I ranked the games on how willing I would be to play them right now and enjoy them.
Half Life 2 would be the more enjoyable experience especially with the inclusion of Episodes.

If I were to rank on importance to gaming then the sequels would be far lower down.
