1. They are making us buy badges this year, with vague promises of reimbursement
2. The panels department doesn't respond to emails
3. They stopped giving us hotel money
4. The metal detectors and bag checks
I haven't bought a badge to a fan convention in a decade. I'm not going to start making exceptions now. It's too late to cancel on them this year, obviously, but we're not going to deal with the same next year.
We mostly fill our rooms, and the panels are crazy popular. But we go to a lot of cons, and I'm not about to support this continued trend of anime conventions backing away from supporting the people who provide the majority of their content. Anime Boston is the only anime convention we still perform at or attend, since it was the only one left that was both big enough and respected its panelists.
I suspect this basically ends our presence at anime cons altogether. We'll just have to bring our anime content to the ConnectiCons and Zenkaikons, and I guess add some gaming cons into the free space in our schedule.

Foreign Anime Openers, you are going to be at MAGFest 2017.
While this year had my first MAGFest, it won't be my first AB. I like apparently many others went to MAGFest and realized that it is wayyyyyyy better than other cons I'd been to (only like 3 AB and 1 Otakon). I think I've hit that point where I realize I like non anime cons more than I like anime cons. I should try and go to a PAX, maybe next year.
But I don't think I'll be hitting AB or Otakon in the near future unless some things are changed. Like not scheduling panels back to back so guests don't have to queue to get good seats or even just to get in.

After that one con, we dropped most of our previously regular anime cons from the rotation. As soon as we brought our friends to a PAX in subsequent years, they almost all stopped going to Otakon (which until that point had been our biggest group con) immediately.
AB is probably the best anime con in the US, or at least in the east. But there's a big difference between going to a con because you want to purely to attend the con, and going to a con because you are performing. I don't think I would have attended any anime cons since 2008 if we hadn't been doing panels/lectures.
This is really going to be a shit storm this year.
Before, the metal detectors/wands were only at some entrances, and only for some people. Also, they let you line up inside the mall.
It looks like they're wanding/metal detecting everyone, and they're redirecting the already egregious lines outside into the shitty weather.
Last year they made people line up outside at that Pru mall entrance, and it was nuts. The line went for blocks.
I'm still on the other end of those currently since I haven't been able to open up panel submissions yet.........
Also, I mentioned this to the TvH's, but due to me getting a new job, me having not had a job since December, and the attendant stress, for the first time in 8 years, I'm not going to be at Anime Boston.
They'll resume leaving comped badges for us without having to register. It was basically a clerical error this year: nothing sinister.
