PSP Blues?

edited November 2006 in Video Games
I keep hearing bad things about the PSP, like how it's going to fail and how UMD is all but useless (listening to the V for Vendetta movie show now). Why do people keep talking like the PSP's bad performance is bad for everyone, including consumers? Low prices on a good piece of electronic-ness seems good to me. I myself plan to hold off on getting one and then swoop in and get a PSP and lots of games the moment it is announced that the PSP is dead. To me, it looks like what's bad for Sony is good for us all. The PSP looks like a good system all in all, but it's doomed to fail because of Sony. Do I have the right strategy, or should I not even bother going PSP?

How the PSP performs doesn't really matter for anyone other than existing PSP owners. If you paid full price for a PSP, then you're hurt because you made a poor investment. Otherwise, it isn't bad. I'm fully in favor of buying a PSP when the price sinks, but that price has to sink pretty low at this point. Let's examine the reasons why.

The PSP plays PSP games, but there really aren't any good ones. So that's out. The PSP is an mp3 player, but it's not even as good as the Sansa, which is much cheaper. The PSP can play video off of UMD, which is dead, or memory stick, but the archos or even the iPod video are probably more convenient for that function. The PSP does have a nice video screen though.

The way I see it, the only advantage of the PSP is that it might be the only device which can subscribe to, download and play podcasts without needing to connect to a computer. For that reason alone it might be worth money. However, the PSP is huge and eats lots of batteries. Its size really makes it not a useful device to carry around. My nano, my phone and my DS combined have more functionality than a PSP and they take up less space. I guess if you don't have an mp3 player or a DS already, and the PSP price is way low, then it will be worth it. The current price of a PSP is $250, the same as a Wii and an iPod nano, so you might be in for a long wait.
