Limewire

edited December 2006 in Technology
I know a very little bit about computers. I mean not very much. Here's my most recent question I can't quite figure out for myself: Is Limewire safe? I've tried it and I notice that even when I logged out of it, my computer was very slow at other applications.

You should probably use some sort of BitTorrent client. Check out the GeekNights episode on the issue.

EDIT: Also, Limewire is pretty much a surefire way to get malware (i.e spyware, trojans, ect) on your computer.

  • But it's great for pr0n. No one cares about that though.

Limewire's okay as long as you accept that a lot of your results will be garbage that somehow matches your search terms--and I mean any search terms. It's pretty obvious that the WMV file that's less than 200k isn't the 5-minute long MP3 you're wanting. Stuff like that.

  • It's basically just as safe as any other [FREE] P2P audio/visual program. BitTorrent has better/more search results, but in my opinion has its own problems with viruses. (worms, trojans, spyware, etc).
  • My mother just bought LimeWire PRO, which she now thinks makes everything on it legal. I've told her this is not the case. I told her about the virus and spyware risk. She won't listen to me, and I don't know what to do. My dad is currently at work offshore, and I haven't been able to talk to him about this yet. So right now I'm close to tearing my hair out.

Someone make a small program that looks like an anti-spyware or whatever checker, so that when it [pretends to] scan your computer, it'll pop up that Limewire PRO is the culprit? Maybe good for the short run, but the long run...I don't know.

Ahhh parents, I wonder if someday some kid is going to be telling me what to do..

I wasn't trying to tell her what to do. I was just trying to convince her to change her mind. I figured if I told her the risk, she would.
  • You could just sort her out with a copy of Cabos.
  • If you offer someone help, and they won't accept it, just don't worry about it. All you have to do is wait for them to suffer the consequences, and they say "I told you so".

I know, believe me, my parents ask for computer help often and I give it, however they forget about what I told them as often, so I end up repeating myself over and over again.
  • My mom uses bittorrent pretty heavily, until recently. You see, my father thought it wouldn't be a good idea to send bittorrent like data over the network. He owns a one man company and he wants to not get arrested because it would look bad. So now my mom is using USENET instead and it's giving her trouble. I told her to just encrypt the data but...
  • Hmm I like the idea of a fake anti virus program, if they keep it on after that make one that keeps piping up and saying it's the problem.
  • What if you made a program that let you choose any file(s), and then it spit out a cookie cutter fake antivirus program that said that those file(s) were a virus? I think there may be a market for that. Hmmmm.

Why am I suddenly reminded of the flash animation "How to keep your parents off the Internet."?
