This has been long-standing common sense for interface designers of all varieties. The simpler something is, the better. It's like, the best board games are always the ones which are easy to play, but difficult to master. Google is the same way. All the power is hidden out of the way, so it's there when you need it, but don't let it get in the way of the simple thing you want to do 99.9% of the time.
The only thing of theirs I've used in the last few years is the groups, because theres a couple of good Phil Foglio communities there.
Oh... and I use the email I have left from the dark ages when I need an easy to remember spare.
