Half-life

I was at the local Second-hand book shop, when I saw a copy of half-life and just that afternoon I heard I heard Rym and Scott talk about. Something about different color that equals a different version. The game cost $20 and some dollars. It has an orange border so it's a complete version.

So I want a good explanation and reason convincing me why I should buy it. I've played some Quake and America's Army PC games and Lots of FPS for Game Cube.

Thanks

Half-Life is the original FPS that came out almost 10 years ago. The color of the box was just orange, it has no effect on what version it is. What Scrym were talking about is the Half-Life 2 second chapter of a three chapter expansion on the game which will come out later this year *hopefully*.

Now, on whether you should buy it or not. Half-Life one of the defining games in the FPS single player genre. It has an intricate story and a wonderful immersion factor. It was also the game that spawned the infamous Counter-Strike mod. Personally, I would say it is one of the games that every game enthusiast should play at some point in their life.

You shouldn't buy it, at least at that price. You can get the entire open source with all of the add-ons for $9.95. Don't pay $20. (I, too, recently purchased it... with a left-over Christmas gift card.) You can even download it direct with Steam and blahbitty blah Natural Selection blahbitty blah Team Fortress Classic, all for that same price.

Point of information - Counterstrike is no longer a free mod. It, too, costs $9.95. If there is some other way to get it for free, let me know, 'cause I wanna play me some shootin' games, dagummit.

Classic CS and Source both run through Steam so it is impossible to play it online without purchasing it. I suppose you could download it somewhere but you will only be able to play it on a LAN.
  • Does it requirre internet to play or can you play single player. a lot of the FPS that I have for the PC are internet only.

Half-Life is single player, but Counter-Strike(any incarnation) is online only.

Wasn't Wolfenstein the first fps? Then comes Doom, Doom 2 and Quake etc.. ??

I meant that original FPS of the series...
  • Ok, gotcha. I guess I missed the boat on that one.
  • Bad news, my old man won't let me get it. He won't even let me play Quake I. Even though the graphics are so bad you can't even tell blood from a wall.
It sucks that he won't let me even though I'm 16.

Wow. When I was 16, I just bought whatever I wanted with my own money. Nobody could or did try to tell me what to do. Again, I don't understand how people deal with parents like that. I really don't know what I would have done with parents like that.

And the rating M even means 16+. Send your dad to the ESRB website and show him what the game says it's rated for, or something.

There's a setting that allows you to turn off the blood. If you tell him that maybe he'll relent.
  • Mario, you NEED to play this game. It is THE FPS. I know what it's like to have parents like that, but mine let me get it at age 15. Half-life deals a lot with killing aliens (who bleed yellow), and most of the blood is just exploding/bouncing meaty bits. And yes, you can turn off the blood. But it's really not that bad. Games like Onimusha are much much worse, and not nearly as good.

Also, you're going to need to get lots of mods for it (and there are lots of mods for it). I suggest, after Natural Selection and CS (they sell it at Half Price Books for ten dollars, and it's worth every penny), They Hunger, Brain Bread (zombie mods), The Specialists (a Matrix mod that kicks ten flavors of awesome) and Vampire Slayers (a mod where you work as a lowly fry-cook for McDonalds).

When you said that on the show, I thought "Lucky ______"

It's not luck, it's balls. Just don't let people control your life, and they won't be able to.

It's not quite that easy with parents, especially irrational ones.

  • If I had to make a generalization, I'd say that most parents are irrational.
  • I have a question:

Is the Day of Defeat from the new Half-Life source engine any good? I play Call of Duty UO (I'm into WW2) and was wondering if Day of defeat is comparable or great.
