Freespace 2 was definitely the greatest space sim ever. (Don't listen to those Tie Fighter junkies!) I've never understood why there weren't more. In terms of 3d game programming, it's got to be the easiest thing you could ever do. Ultra-simple physics (no gravity), no floors, walls, or ceilings, and most of the weapons are just straight-shooting projectiles. The graphic requirements are rock-bottom. And yet...nothing. For so many years.
BSG seemed an obvious choice for a new game of this genre. While I wouldn't be surprised if there are a couple crappy knock-off console games for it out there, the full-on, computer-based space sim is the way to go. And Freespace 2 is the perfect engine for it. I remember discovering the translation controls through a hack; the Shivan ships all had that ability. The glide control probably required some rewriting, but the engine was pretty close to BSG physics anyway.
These people are doing tremendous work. Oddly, they don't accept donations. Usually, open source projects are all about that. Still, even if money isn't an issue, I hope Sci-Fi buys the project (aka just gives them money to keep doing what they're doing), or at leasts grants them the rights to use the intellectual property. A marketing and distribution deal wouldn't hurt, as long as it stays open-source.
Hey, I can dream, can't I? I'm pretty sure I had one about a Freespace 2 based BSG game as some point in the past.
TIE Fighter + tunnels = Terminal Velocity (or Descent, too, I suppose). That was infinity+1 better than a space flight sim, because it wasn't just piloting through an empty sector. I spent a lot of time back in tha day playing TV over LAN.
Terminal Velocity is a great game, but I mostly played the demo which was largely flying over the surface of a planet. As for Descent, all three Descent games are awesome, but Descent 2 is the best one.
