Freeware for my freind

My friend/neighbor needs some good anti-spy ware/virus freeware and Clean up tool. He has XP on a Pen III.
Suggestions, I don't want to make him drop money on Norton or ad-aware.
He has a 10 dollar best buy suggested thing.

Here's one that is totally free, simple to set up, easy to use, and will run on any computer. It's called the Ubuntu Live CD.

But seriously, if you find any free anti-virus, anti-spyware, or anti-adware software, it's probably a virus, spyware, or adware. The best way to avoid this stuff is to just be smart. And if your friend already has that sort of crap-ware on his computer and doesn't want to pay any money, tell him to use DBAN and wipe his hard drive and reinstall XP. Or start using Linux. Honestly, a Pentium III is getting on in it's years by now, and it's time to wipe or buy a new computer. Simple as that.

Bottom Line: The only solution to this problem is to pour money into it or completely start over with a clean slate.

  • ClamAV or TrendMicro's HouseCall are the only ones that are free. ClamAV is usually used on Linux to clean viruses out of e-mails, but you can use it to scan windows as well. HouseCall is a website that scans your computer without having to pay or install software.
