My first DS

edited May 2007 in Video Games
After constantly listening to Rym and Scott, talk about how great the Nintendo DS is, I finally broke down and bought one yesterday. I got a black one to match with my IPod. I'm really loving it so far. I also picked up a copy of New Super Mario Bros. It feels really great to get back into some good old fashion 2D platform gaming. I love it. The DS is actually my first actual portable game system. I've play the older gameboys before but I always felt they were never worth the money. Anyhow I was wanting some recommendations for my next DS game purchase. Also what cool accessories should I get for my DS as well?

  • Accessories other than a carrying case are not necessary. As for games, Pokemon should hold you over for quite awhile.

Do you really need to ask? Pokemon.
  • MarioKart DS is also really good.. Man, I can't count how many hours of my life I spent on that game ^_^
  • I loved MarioKart, it is still in my house somewhere. Tetris is cool, don't buy that game called 'Sprung' its cheap for a reason.
  • Also, it depends on what type of games you are looking for. For example: the DS has some good RPG games, but it is useless to you, if you are not a RPG fan. *.*

Pokemon, Phoenix Wright, Elite Beat Agents, Tetris!

The only accessories that I'd say are really "necessary" are screen protectors (particularly if you're going to play more touch screen intensive games like Elite Beat Agents) and a carry case or protector if you want to keep it in like-new condition.
  • I recommend the Joytech ArmorLite Case. I have one, and it is awesome. The DS is the handheld gaming console that I couldn't of even dreamed of as a kid. Two backlit colored screens and a touch pad? You don't need a wire to play other people? No way.
I recommend Mario Kart DS. I have spent the most time playing that game. I lost it recently. That is the first game I have lost in ever.

Actually, the case that I use is the spare PSP sleeve that i picked up for $1.99 at my local GameStop from their used accessory rack.  It's good enough for my PSP, and it was good enough for the PPC-6600 I had.  It's cheap, easy to use, does the basic job, and it fits in the pocket.

  • Screen protectors are shit. Don't use them.
  • I found my MarioKart!!!!!!!!!

I like RPG's. It's just that I'm a bit burned out on them at the moment. I have owned FFXII since October and I'm about 1/4 into the game and have little interest in playing it at the moment.

That's perfect there is case similar to that for my Ipod that I'm looking to buy as well.

I've never really bothered with screen protector anything. Since I wear glasses I always have a lens cleaner handy and if the screen is ever smudged I just use that to clean it up.
  • Does anyone know if Final Fantasy III is any good? I love RPG's, but I haven't heard anything about the game.

How so? Mine haven't done any damage to the DS screens and I can see some scratches on there (from playing EBA on Sweatin' mode) that I'm glad aren't on the actual screen. In my case, the protectors are there more for aesthetics than functionality. Particularly for if I want to Ebay it later...

It's very pretty but very slow. 15 unskippable seconds of the characters posing after every battle? Not so cool. :| I'm hoping they correct that for the FFIV remake.

I put a protector on my daughter's DS Lite touch screen because she scratched the hell out of the one on her (now mine) old DS.

It's my favorite game on DS. The game play is very light and easy to play on the go. The story is also the same the way. The dungeons are designed very well. This version of the game gives you an escape spell so it's easy to level up by hacking into a deep part of a dungeon and then warping out and doing it again.

The music, graphics and presentation are all top notch. I highly recommend it.

No matter what games you like you need Advanced Wars Dual Strike and the Castlevania titles. I also recommend Children of Mana- but be warned its a VERY shallow dungeon crawler.

  • Phoenix Wright. Objection? Overruled.
  • I just bought a DS last week and am very happy with it although my router is not compatible with it so Wifi gaming is almost out of the question from home.
The game I am playing most is "42 in 1". I believe it's called "All Time Classics" in The States. Great value and I just need to get connected to the Nintendo Wifi, then great multiplayer gaming is assured.
  • I recommend Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and if you're a fan of the series, Resident Evil: Deadly Silence.
  • I'd have to go with Trauma Center and Phoenix Wright. The Castlevania's and Mario's are also excellent.

As for protectors, I use my PSP sleeve for my DS as I have a nice solid Logitech case for my PSP. This way I can toss the DS in my backpack for the trip to work with no worries. I also just stuck a couple Pelican Screen Protectors on after noticing a scratch in the touch pad. They fit perfectly with no air bubbles and everything is good to go now.
  • How is your router not compatible?

At first the DS told me that no access points were in range so I had to buy a USB adaptor. But recently I have managed to get on the WIFI without it. Strange. now I'm loving the Mario Kart but always seem to be matched up with arseholes who switch off when things are not going their way. Losers.

Thank the awesome Nintendo Wi-fi for that one.
  • Geometry Wars Galaxies is the best DS game I've played.
