Other Forums?

edited August 2007 in Everything Else
I wonder if any of you guys are active, or at least somewhat regular visitors of any other internet forums.
Also, what would it take for you guys to keep coming back to a forum? topics? members? free pizza?

  • Aside from my own forum and here, I go to SEED Genesis and Dave and Joel's forum.

For me, a forum needs to have the right kinds of people (ie not full of 13 yr olds bragging about their Naruto headbands) and be very active.
  • Viola.

Hehe sorry, should've searched for a duplicade topic. Worry not, I'll go back and hide in the corner.
  • Viola.
    I'm a cello man myself.
  • The Voice Acting Club

This is my most frequently visited and participated. I'm a Flash producer, so it's pretty natural.
    ScrewAttack

Qouting them, "We are not a porn site". If you know the Angry Video Game Nerd, you should know them as well.
...and god forbid, don't even ask, The Official Nintendo Forums. Yeah, not gunna link it.
  • My own forums, and a webcomic forum for one of my sub-sites that i do called "Screw These Comics".

    Not linking to either.
  • I use to be far more active on forums. I go to my forums on pokefarm and a few others but that's about it. No time for forum whoring anymore.
  • I use to be far more active on forums.
This pretty much sums me up as well. This is the only forum I frequent as of late and I don't see that changing much in the future.
  • Oh my, don't get me started...

Every other board I went on was complete and total crap! Sure, I was a bit n00bish, but they coulda been nicer... oh well. I'm at a great forum now, and that's all that matters.

This is the first forum I ever participated in. Maybe because it's one of the first non-phpBB forums I've used...

I go to anime news network forums regularly and this place. I tried 4chan and Otaku Booty at one point but one was too dumb and the other was too non-geek and anime. So ANN and here are my favorites.

    Agreed.

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again: The Geeknights forums have ruined me. A forum needs to be clean and easy to navigate (i.e. be Vanilla, and to hell with PHPbb), enforce spelling and grammar rules to keep morons out, and ENFORCE SPELLING AND GRAMMAR RULES TO KEEP MORONS OUT. Twice.

I come here because I can throw my ideas up against other people who will only occasionally answer with, "omgzr0fl!!11!1 ur moms on teh floor wit mi p3n15."

We tend to have a bit higher-level discussions of politics, economics, religion, pop culture, technology, and Pogeymans here.

Lately, I've had trouble posting elsewhere for these very reasons. I sometimes post on the Simply Syndicated boards still, but participate there mostly in the chat room now instead. This has led to a very jealous Richard Smith calling me out on the second birthday episode of Movies You Should See, upset that I have left him for Geeknights.

    That was you? Nice!

When I was an Internet newbie I used to ask my bro to interpret L337 Sp34I{ for me. I haven't seen many people type like that in a long time though. I guess people are starting to grow out of it or that I don't run into it as much.

I am in Fast Karate because that forum is hilarious, then I come here because there are so many cool ideas here, I go to the saint seiya fan forum because I like saint seiya, then sometimes I go to fear the gooberzilla forums to read about interesting movies and finally I go to Otaku USA because that magazine is awesome. Normally it takes me 30 min to check them out.  I would be in a AWO forum but they do not have one :P

  • At the moment university forums, the GameFAQs Animal Crossing online board (only when I want to trade) and Geeknights are about the only forums I'd bother to post in. I read a few other forums, but I just don't have the overwhelming urge to interact with the vast majority of Internet denizens. Time is also a factor, I don't think I'd be able to justify spending more time keeping up with another online community. Thankfully, these forums cover most of my interests in one place, without the endless subforums that most places have.

Heh, kids at my school had 'em some headbands, but they didn't know anything about Naruto. I knew more than them and I never watched the show. It was a bit funny.
  • StarDestroyer.net - the people there will call you out if you try and bullshit your way through debates with only google and wiki knowledge
Megatokyo's anime board - I haven't read the webcomic in years but I post on the board to keep up with the latest news and chat with people who actually know about anime and japanese culture. Naruto/bleach fanboys generally get run out of town pretty quickly
Gotfrag's Day of Defeat board - I play this HL1 mod in online leagues, the community is small and everyone knows everyone else so trashtalking is especially fun

Funny story. At my college this guy wearing the Naruto jacket and these ugly matching Nike shoes was trying to be "stylin". I thought he was a fan of Naruto so I asked and he didn't even know what it was. So I said he's wearing a cartoon characters costume and walked off. I had to say cartoon because he surely would know the word anime.
  • For me a forum at least a plurality from this list:
    1) Well moderated, but not over moderated
    2) A firm set of rules that are known, but not so many rules that it becomes asinine.
    3) A somewhat mature base of users.
    4) Something that's not found anywhere else, forum-wise
    5) "Critical Mass". That is, it's not going to fade into the night.
    6) A reason to come back.
These interests are why I go to 4chan so often, but can't stand, say, Megatokyo forums. I forget who said this quote, but it fits my view of probably 90% of forums: "There's no THERE there."
  • And going even farther off-topic, everyone thinks I'm trying to... cosplay?... as Kenny from South Park because I have a huge, almost burnt orange jacket that I wear a lot.
Even better, when I zip it up all the way it covers my mouth, which comes in handy when my throat has spazzing fits (coughing fits that list almost 10 minutes). But no one understands me when I talk except for the really dedicated South Park fans.

How does that happen? I must be getting old because if I'd walked into school dressed like Naruto, I would most assuredly get into a fight.

There's this store called Hot Topic that also sells anime stuff like Naruto jackets. It was obviously some trends loving wannabe shopping there and thought it was the new thing to wear. Probably from the new majority of headband wearers. This one time someone told me when they asked someone about their liking for Naruto they said it was a sports logo or something. *shakes head* It's just funny to see people wearing something they have no idea about being called on it. Like when everyone wore heartagrams and never even listened to HIM.
  • The whole concept is violently funny. We're infiltrating pop-culture and they don't even know it.
  • First pop culture. Then the world! Mhahahahahah! . . . What we're NOT taking over the world?
