System Shock 2

edited August 2007 in Video Games
So Bioshock just came out, and it totally doesn't work on my computer. The demo just crashes, but apparently I am not the only person with this problem. Anwyay, I've always known that System Shock 2 is widely regarded as one of the greatest games. Well, I just started playing it. I'm a rebel, I've never even seen System Shock 1, but I'm playing 2. I gotta say that about 20 minutes into the game, I can already see what all the hub-bub is about. I can't wait to get deeper into this game. Please don't spoil it for me or anything.

How does it measure up to Half-Life in your mind?

  • Half-Life isn't even in the same scope as System Shock 2. You could legitimately argue that it's the best game ever made. It's a strong contender for best FPS, that's for sure.
  • The first thing I have to say is this. I thought that all the PDA and computer stuff was new and cool in Doom 3. Now I realize it's a cheap System Shock rip-off.

Coincidentally, Joel and I podcasted about System Shock this very night! But yeah, that's a point I go over in brief. The PDAs in Doom were just them trying to ape System Shock for all it was worth. Clearly it didn't work out so good.

  • I only ever remember playing System Shock 2 for half an hour or so, I certainly never finished it. Got a feeling this games going to get dusting off some time soon if Dave and Joels Podcast description is anything to go by "In this episode Joel and I are masturbatorily obsessed with System Shock 2!"

Oh and because I need a new graphics card to run Bioshock. (Damn demo wont run on my X850XT)
  • You should take a look and get the Rebirth mod, it's a graphical tweak pack. It's night and day between the modded Hybrid models and the original 12-polygon meshes.

Also, give psi a shot. It's a lot of fun to beat stuff up with your mind.
  • I just recently beat BioShock and I'm looking forward to getting into System Shock. Should I start with the first one, or just go with System Shock 2?
  • Now that I'm done BioShock I'm totally going to give System Shock 2 a go...I've heard that they are very very similar.
  • I'm just playing System Shock 2 only.
  • System Shock 1 is awesome if you can get past the incredibly cumbersome interface/controls. If not, probably better to keep it to System Shock 2, which is a more fully realized game.
