  • There is some speculation that the lightsaber is actually an ancient version/design. This might mean that the horizontal components are meant to be some sort of exhaust instead of a functional hilt.

  • Years ago I came up with a design idea for a cross guard for a light saber, to stop a sliding blade cutting down to the wrist/hand. The design in this trailer isn't quite it though, because the light bits don't cross. Another saber blade landing on that bit would just cut through.

My design idea had a cross, but then a 170 degree turn of each bit, and then the mini saber parts. They would cross beside the main blade, and each would protect the projector bit of the other.

Anyway, while my design is more practical, this one will probably work just as well in the physical universe of the movie, just like the sliding blade problem was never a problem in previous movies.

I want a Nolan Star Wars.

Midichlorians open a wormhole, but the wormhole actually traverses dreams instead of space.

  • I always kind of wondered why lightsabers didn't really have any kind of crossguard. Well, now they do.

Also, sk0pe, I'd also argue that the new Star Trek is very little like the old Star Trek.

The reason I made this comment is because he picked up on all the bits of the stories and the characters that were portrayed in the original series.

One of my earlier geekeries was Star Trek, I have the entire Bu™ -Ray original series plus the movies and have watched both the sets a few times. The Abrams movies are closer to the motion picture releases for TOS than the show.

Also there are nods to TNG, Enterprise, Voyager and DS9 littered as Easter eggs throughout.
  • I'm just hoping that Episode VIII will be subtitled "Attack the Gas Station of the Clones."
  • Of course it's closer to the movies, because both of the reboot movies were as close to rip-offs of Wrath of Khan as he could possibly make them.

Which is my only concern for the Force Awakens. I really hope he doesn't pick his top movie and just remakes it twice. George Lucas could have done without his own previous movies, as they influenced him too much to. I want new stuff.
  • So, without busting out any cray photoshop just yet... Luke's lightsaber crossguard would be like so?

    Or am I misunderstanding?

    Cuz that would look hella-fuckin-baller-status.
  • I guess kinda. It would create a mild spiral look, or at least have rotational symmetry.

This is quite true, whether a 3rd film is ever delivered or will sell is yet to be seen.

  • This video draws an interesting through line from Zork to Metroidvanias and talks about roleplaying inbetween. I think it's super cool.

I love at the end how the one lady comments on how delicious it is and the other lady just looks at her like she's crazy.

Karl whips out his journalist chops from before he hosted the Today show, and shows us an artfully administered though very mild beasting.

I didn't know Karl had the balls (or more likely Channel 9 would allow him?).
I wish more news journalism in Australia was like this.
Abbot is the only Australian Prime Minister that has evoked a face palm from me on every appearance.
I can only hope that Abbot is a 'one term wonder'.
  • Maybe "one term blunder" would be more appropriate?
  • Was looking around for the sitacon 2006 podcaster panel because I remember it being funny, can't find it anywhere, but I did find this picture
