Ubuntu NVIDIA help

I do understand that the driver for the NVIDIA video cards are not perfect however I can't go over 1240X1040 resolution and I'v looked over the Ubuntu forums for help.
Can anyone help me?

    If you install the newer Ubuntu the restricted drivers manager should let you install the real nvidia driver. You can then use the nvidia-settings program to configure your resolution and such.

    Just try to type nvidia-settings into the terminal.
