Flat Earth? Laughs abound!

edited October 2007 in Everything Else
So, I finished reading another of TP's Discworld books today and felt the need to do some internet research involving the origins of the old flat earth belief, which Wikipeda tells me is mostly a fabrication, and i found this site...

All I got to say is read the FAQ, then contemplate how these people managed to get on the internets.

  • Welcome to the 21st century.
  • Oh no! that time I went to Japan via Asia then came back via America I must have been fooled!!
  • I really like how they 'support' some of the questions in the FAQ, with forum topics on the site that have no outside references.  The maps are pretty funny too, I loled considerabley.
  • That map hurts my head... since at no point the sun wouldn't be visible.

Wow, this is the most retarded thing I've ever read. Let me just list a few questions for the lazy.
Q: "Why doesn't water run off the Earth?"

A: There is a vast ice wall that keeps the water where it is. The ice wall is roughly 150ft high. This also explains why you can find a vast plane of ice when you travel south.
Q: "How come the travel time by air from South America to New Zealand, via the polar route, is SHORTER than the travel time going North first and then South again?"

A: (Presumed answer: The airline pilots are misled by their GPS, or are deliberately conspiring to make it appear that the flights take different times)
Q: "When traveling in a straight direction, you will always reach the same point on the globe from where you started. How can this happen if the world is flat?"

A: You need to have evidence for this to be true. Also, define "straight." Remember, the northern point on the compass is, under most circumstances (unless near the centre or deep in the ice wall), pointing toward the centre of the Earth. Therefore, if you follow your compass due east or due west, ending up at the same point you started from, you've just gone around the world in a circle.
Q: If you go directly south won’t you eventually fall off the edge of the Earth?

A: Yes, you will. In order to use this fact as proof you need to record a video of someone flying directly south around the world without falling off the edge. Furthermore you need to prove that your navigational equipment allows you to travel directly south without deviating.
I mean, come on, what kind of nut case would believe this. It's complete bullshit (excuse my French) and you'd have to be mentally retarded to even think that this is even remotely close to possible. I just... *facepalm*.

Okay, I know, we'll hold a "convention" for the Flat Earth Society. We can offer free "showers" and "tanning beds" for them. (I'm sorry, that was wrong.)

  • I think you should only be able to post in this thread if you have a degree in ancient history.
  • I like how they explain the tides, thats a good one.

But seriously, I think that its not so much giving proof to why the earth is flat, so much as they are saying the earth is flat and then coming up with excuses for why certain things area as they are in a flat world.
  • I honestly can't believe that some people are stupid enough to fall for this. But of course, religion exists, so....

Are you somehow impyling that those who follow a religion are stupid? *scratches chin*
Please correct me if I'm wrong. ^^

Says no spelling errors found, side was wrong in the context and and the words nonetheless consists of are right all in them self(?) (and that's why most spell checks fail for me).

(Learning english for 7 years and spending most of my free time with English media and still I can't get my English right. But I also don't get my German to be flawless :/ )

True that they be correct out of context. But one should read over their own posts to grab that sort of mistakes. I noticed the side. Then after 'fixing' it I saw the non the less. Which should be none... and be one word. Ah well, I can't write German even if my life depended on it XD
  • Q: "What about NASA? Don't they have photos to prove that the Earth is round?"

A: NASA is part of the conspiracy too. The photos are faked.

Q: "Why has no-one taken a photo of the Earth that proves it is flat?"

A: The government prevents people from getting close enough to the Ice Wall to take a picture.

Q: "How did NASA create these images with the computer technology available at the time?"

A: Since NASA did not send rockets into space, they instead spent the money on developing advanced computers and imaging software instead
...Some serious conspiracy theories, there. And then looking at the -reasons- for such conspiracies.. For money IS plausible, but not for that long. Not for that many people. Somewhere, somehow, something will leak.

I wonder if they believe having their picture taken will steal their soul too?
  • I'm pretty sure that site is just as genuine as http://www.shelleytherepublican.com/.
  • Are you somehow impyling that those who follow a religion are stupid? *scratches chin*
Yes, I believe that is exactly what he's saying.

I don't think it's fake. Check out the discussions in the forum. They hurt my head.
  • It's not fake. As per my earlier comment, the Flat Earthers have been around for a long time, and many of them really believe it. I am surprised you people didn't know about them already.

We learned about the Flat Earth Society in a computer class. We learned about "the Internet," and I still don't get it.
  • I am surprised you people didn't know about them already.I've known about it for some time (8 years maybe). I'm just not convinced that most of its members aren't part of it as part of a joke; though, I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few who are taking it seriously. It seems like the GNAA of science.
  • I always figured that it was a combination of people joking around and people making the point that you can't prove a negative.

It sounds like whoever wrote their arguments is of the mindset that unless he sees that the earth is round with his own eyes, you can't prove to him that it is round.
  • Well I'm just happy I've brought both happiness and seething anger to this forum once more.

I would say that the site is real but a lot of the guests there are bullshiters who feed into the stupid peoples minds.

And for those who would join them, think of sailing on the sea, and seeing the far off mountain ranges growing out of the Earth, it's round!
