Video Game Online Servers

edited October 2007 in Technology
Is there a big, huge difference between VG servers and Compy servers? Would you need something special (special equipment, software, etc.)? Is this type of thing restricted to certain people (Can anyone up and run a VG Server for their favorite Online game?)?

I'm not looking to make one, I'm just really curious.

Oh, and sorry if this is in a wrong section, but I didn't know where exactly it would fit.

  • Well what type of online game? Something like world of warcraft or more like counter-strike?
  • I'm saying something more like a console game.

Not possible. It really depends on the game. All the servers for say 360 games are owned and run by Microsoft. That is why you pay a subscription fee for Xbox Live Gold to play online, it's mostly server fees.

Oh, well, that makes sense. I just thought they were being dick-wads.
  • I just thought they were being dick-wads.I don't even know how you could consider that option. Console makers are the most generous people in the world, and they would never be anything but kind to their customers.
