Non-Geek Hobbies

edited October 2007 in Everything Else
So we all tend to have a lot of similar hobbies here, but I was wondering what your non-geek hobbies are.

The rules: If it could be a topic of a MTW GeekNights episode, it doesn’t count. For example it could be a musical instrument, sport, or some non-geeky guilty pleasure you have.

  • Would papercraft count as geeky if most of what I papercraft are anime characters?
  • I greatly enjoy live theater and see as many Broadway shows as I can.
  • If it's a hobby, it's geeky.
  • I'd say that counts! That's cool! Post pictures please.
  • My wife and I have been taking dance lessons lately. I was surprised at how easy it is to pick up. The really super part is if you're at a wedding or some other event with couples dancing, you're ahead of 90% of the general populace if you've had at least one lesson. Everyone else is doing the clutch-n-sway while you're doing turns and spins and halfway decent footwork.
  • Backpacking into the middle of bloody well no where in the dead of winter is so awesome, I can hardly wait for December to come so I can go again.

  • My boyfriend and I took a few classes in Jujutsu and Kickboxing. It was pretty fun and a really good workout. Right now our budget can't afford those classes, but we'll try to continue them as soon as we can.

But in agreement with Scott, if it's a hobby, I would also consider it geeky, however, I get what you mean. During the summer time, my boyfriend and I would go to a local family fun center and play miniature golf with friends. We would make the games interesting by playing it like HORSE, in which you had to putt a certain way like with your eyes closed or left handed. If the next person didn't get the shot in, they would earn letters H, O, R, etc.
  • I don't know if it counts as a hobby, but I really enjoy just walking around. I tend to wander around in a two mile radius. I tend to avoid residential areas because they're a bit boring, and I tend to avoid areas in which I worry about getting accosted.
  • Wandering is awesome. Before gas prices got pricey, I really enjoyed just driving around for no particular reason. I also enjoy exploring roads that I always wondered where they went and discovering alternate routes to various places I didn't know that existed. This is more enjoyable in non urban areas, imo.
  • I just realized how much I'm not well rounded anymore. All of my hobbies now are something geeky or geek related. In the past in the pre geek days I was in the step team, a dance troupe, a small orchestra, and loved wrestling. A lot can change in a few years eh?

This is either really great or super sad. :/
  • Boxing, biking, and studying ancient Persian history.
  • Weightlifting is becoming something of a hobby of mine. As I progress in strength, I'm going to be getting more and more into it. I'd also like to try out boxing at some point; seems like it'd be fun.

    Guitar, piano, bass, violin.
Other than that my hobbies are 100% geeky.
    EDIT: forgot to list percussion.

  • You will never, ever catch me doing anything musically. I always fail, whether it's singing, playing piano or clarinet. I just lose interest. Same with any sports.

Drawing I guess is kind of geeky.. Let's see. I like reading novels and magazines, especially Maclean's and Dean Koontz. In Scouts, we camp a lot, and it's my favourite thing to do, especially in winter when we get the cabin and there's no kids around. Uh. That's about it for non-geekness...
  • Fencing, swimming, and soccer.
I can now swim without taking a breath for more than 25 meters, but I need to be relaxed and very concentrated.
  • Cricket, F1, golf, obscure films, Roman history.

My record is a little over 50 meters. ~_^
  • I need to practice some more.
  • Geeky hobbies are any hobbies that a geek might take to. The thing that makes a hobby geeky isn't the hobby itself (perfectly sober non-geeky Japanese people are known to read manga, for instance) but the way that geeks go about practicing and learning about the things that they are interested in.

Get some geeks, and give them beer and baseball. They'll spit out the BJCP beer style guidelines and an endless stream of batting statistics. Get some non-geeks, give them the same hobbies, and their output will not be geeky.

How long is a pool? 25?

Usually. Olympic size is 50 yards.
  • Eep! You guys make my swimming skills look like child's play!

Anyways, I take to the Fluting and the Singing. The Fluting's getting better, and the singing needs some (a lot) of work. Also, I love drawing. I'll doodle on anything! Like, today during Leadership 101 I ripped a sheet of notebook of paper into 6 peices, and drew all over them, half for my binder, half for my girlfriend. Also, I used to take Karate, but that stopped in 6th grade, though now my mom wants me to box.

Not the best hobbies, but they're fun to me.

I was a competitive swimmer for about 13 years.
  • Juggling, darts, poker (although mostly online poker), politics (spectator only).

    I shower...is that a non-geeky hobby?

(That probably wasn't very funny. Sorry)
Overall, I think I'm so much of a geek that I probably look geeky at all my "non-geeky" hobbies. Go figure.
Weightlifting is becoming something of a hobby of mine. As I progress in strength, I'm going to be getting more and more into it.

Hey, me too! I'm not a very big guy, but it makes me feel better. Do you take any supplements? Protein drinks?

I tried to get into soccer. Played some indoor soccer for a city rec team a few times. The problem is, it is mostly made up of kids who played in high school and/or college, but not good enough to go anywhere with it. They play dirty, act like everyone else is cheating, like the ref is favoring, as if you and everyone else is why they loose the ball, can't shoot straight, why the guy down the field scored, ect.

  • My hobbies are swimming, and drama. I can usually hold my breath for about 50m.
Nothing to really say about drama... I like to act.
I'm really big into biking, I'll bike all over. I usually take a 7 mile ride every day.
  • My non-geek hobby is wood working.
  • I'll say it again. All hobbies are geeky.
  • Eep! You guys make my swimming skills look like child's play!

Same, got to the Nationals and everything.

I should really start it up again.... but that requires effort.
(Its more effort for me to find out where my local pool is, arrange times to go, and to actually travel there, than the amount of physical effort it takes for me to swim for an hour or so)
