Putting your money where your mouth is

edited October 2007 in Technology
I think just about everyone on here knows that I want to quit my job and be a person who makes money online. Up to now I've been fiddling with about 20 websites that I own and operate (I only disclose a small portion here) but I' m ready to make the big plunge.

Before the year is out I expect my company to have another "early out" offer and I plan on taking it. To help get my butt in gear I have a goal to develop a wordpress plugin or a firefox extension.

What I would like from all of you is to tell me what sort of plugin or extension you would find useful that does not currently exist today. As it is, every time I get an idea to create something I find something that is "good enough" already exists.

No prizes other than seeing your desire coded and brought to life.

If everything works out well then I figure I should be ready to leave the rat race and work from home. I don't need a million dollar idea, a $50K a year idea is good enough for my needs :)

As of right now I have had success licensing board games and selling software but board games is a very low margin business and you have to create like Knizia to make a living at it. So I want to focus on software because once you create it, distribution is essentially free.

  • Hmmm... You want to make a career out of our ideas, eh?

Hehe, just kidding. I got nothin'.

Well, I would love an application that would ask you for your favorite movie/ movie/ anime series and then it would give you the best choices that would research what animators/ directors/ actors, etc works and give then give the best from them or the best films that relate to your choices.

Granted that I can do that from imdb ot ANN but I am lazy like that :P

  • A Simple Machines integration. I'd like to be able to make a post on my front page in a specific category, and have the board that shares the name with that category get a post that's the exact title and content of the post I made on the front page.
  • A better Ad-block so stupid bloggers don't scam us for money.

Something like arstechnica? Where you use a forum for commenting rather than wordpress?

Yeah. I want it kinda like how Rym and Scott do it, only automated, where there's a post about subject Foo, and a link to a thread on the forums with the exact text, and, as you said, the forums for commenting.
  • Wait... you wish to make money off a Firefox extension which idea you have not thought up yourself but just taken from someone else? You can ask for donations tops when doing that.
  • No, I'm not going to make money off of this. I just want something that I have to do to prove that I can do it.
Many people do open source work as a way to prove to a prospective employer that they are good.

    Aaaah, so... I'm still confused.

As for ideas, perhaps you can get some ideas if you browse through the existing extensions at Addons.mozilla.org. Or at least you'll know what you shouldn't make, though perhaps can improve.
  • The idea of a WordPress plugin that uses a forum for commenting rather than wordpress is where I want to go. the only real hard part will be getting it to work with multiple forums. I don't think of it as hard per se but time consuming because there are so many forum packages out there.
