So I beat through the fire and flames on expert...

edited November 2007 in Everything Else
I had a guitar-gasm...
Now I can review Guitar Hero 3.
Basically the good things it has is the upgraded guitar and the batle mode, the intro was awesome and (as far as I know) there's no guitar/song lag.
The thing that bothered me the most was the song selection, no variety, besides santana and the rolling stones it was the same things, not to mention they only packed hits, not obscure song like last time, loading times were an issue and the singer is the uglyest thing I seen since MD Geist.
I'll stick with Guitar Hero 2, thank you.

  • I just got it Saturday. Although I do like the song list, I agree on the "no variety" thing.

But congrats on beating it in expert! ^__^
  • Well done, you have in effect mastered the one string guitar. I knew I shouldn't have gone with six string to start me off.
  • I also agree on no variety. It's just all awesome hits across the board. No obscure fun songs.
  • I've been trying this out in the stores and I have to say that this game just does not appeal to me. I think the episode of South Park pretty much sums up my feelings on this game.

If I could find the code for embeding the video on these forums I would embed it.
  • Has anyone watch the latest South Park? :P

Yeap.  It was about what I'd expected. ^_~

Well, but I already know how to play a six string guitar, been doing so since I was in 3rd grade.

I started playing guitar hero because of all the fuzz about the first game, it's nothing like playing guitar, good warm up though.
EDIT: knowing how to play guitar actually makes guitar hero harder, especially if one has been playing for 15 years.

As was shown in the South Park episode. From my experiences with Frets on Fire (It's pretty much the same, graphics are worse, and you have to find the awesome songs yourself) it's only fun for once in a while. I.e. having a 'rock concert' for/with your friends. Iirc there was an article on digg about how to play certain games, one was Guitar Hero (2 I think) and they just rocked out, not caring about the keys needed to press XD
  • The wireless controller is a fucking piece of garbage for the 360. The red fret just doesn't seem to work half the time and the buttons stick. I don't recommend getting a wireless guitar.
  • They set up the game for online play which is bothersome. The bad parts:
    • Co-op is only available in career mode. This means you have to beat career mode to unlock every song in each difficulty. Grind ++
    • You pick the difficulty before the song in quick play. This may seem little but it's a total pain to back out when you're passing the guitar around.
    • Difficulty settings are all to similar. Medium is a hard medium and the difference between hard and expert is somewhat minimal. It doesn't seem as balanced for novices through GH geeks as the prior ones.
Battle mode is OK but the broken career-mode is absolutely breaking the game. I've always played this with people in the room and just rocked out. Other than battle mode (which is OK) it's pretty much just Guitar Hero 2.5.

You forgot the slow loading times.
  • My game actually lags a little, which can get kind of annoying.

I spent all night trying to unlock a song, only to find out that you can only unlock it in co-op. Great.
  • Same thing happened to me, it was annoying.
  • I was never bothered by the loading times, nor did I have to deal with lag.
  • I have the PS2 version, and the load times are tedious. There is a slight lag mid-song once in a very, very long while, but it is barely noticeable, and has yet to interfere with my game play.
  • You forgot the slow loading times.
I thought it was just because I had the PS2 version. Are the others slow too? I kind of counted on it since I got the cheap ported version.

Well, now you must face a greater challenge.

I would buy if it was for Wii or PC.

Seconded. I'd buy it no matter what though.
  • I think people who make fun of the accordion must have never heard zydeco. Zydeco rules.
  • I think this might be something you could homebrew onto the DS if you couldn't make the PC controller.
  • I am waiting for EA's next big music title: Ska Band, basically Rock Band with a trumpet, a trombone and a sax :)

I could also go for Psychobilly Band, which has a guitar, a drumset and an upright bass.
  • I admit it. I will pay virtually any amount of money for any music simulation game.
