Contra 4 on DS

edited November 2007 in Video Games
I just got this in the mail today. Yeah, it is just like the original game on the DS. One hit and you die.

I've clocked about an hour into this game so far and I have not beaten the first level yet. The bitch part is that when you die you lose your kick-ass weapon. So, if you die on a boss battle you might as well turn the game off because you are not going to beat the level with just your pee-shooter.

It has co-op play but both players have to own a copy of the game.

The game uses both screens and you have a grapple weapon that you can use to grab platforms above you.

If you liked the original Contra game for NES you will probably like this one too.

    You're doing it wrong.
  • No, it really is a "pee" shooter. Once you play the game you will realize that the "Rapid" rifle that you start with is about as useful as peeing on the enemies.
  • After playing this game for several hours all I can say is that this is Contra on the DS. All those other games called Contra over the last 15 years? No, this is Contra!

Yeah, I died a lot, even on Easy.

I can't wait to get my hands on this. I hear it has the original Contra and Contra S as unlockable playable games?
  • I have heard about those two being unlock-able but I do not know how far into the game, or on what difficulty level, you need to get to unlock them.

Contra S? You mean Super C.

Yes I do. My sincerest apologies.
  • From what I am reading online there is bunch of unlock-able content in the game, worth the $30 price tag. If only it had single card download play.
  • Buying this game next week.
  • I have made it as far as the 5th level now. I can burn through the first two stages without getting killed on Easy level.

    Hunter Missles are the shit!

A few things to know to do better in this game:

    1. Your prime focus should not be on killing enemies but avoiding bullets headed your way. The game becomes ten times easier if you play this way.

    2. Always keep a backup weapon. If you know you are about to die hit the "L" button so you do not lose your special weapon (it will cycle you to your pea-shooter and you only lose the weapon you are using when you die).

    3. Hunter Missiles are the best weapon when going through a level but the worst against bosses.

    4. Laser is the best weapon against bosses due to it's high rate of fire and ability to ignore terrain.

    5. If you do not have a special weapon when fighting a boss just give up. There are some bosses you can beat easily with the pea-shooter while avoiding their attacks but it will take forever!!!

  • I refuse to play the game on easy because I like a challenge, however I am really enjoying it even though I die all the time.I can get up to the middle of level 3 on hard and basically what this game comes down to, is remembering every position of bullet or enemy coming towards you and knowing which to skip or shoot and also knowledge of what weapon is effective on what type of enemy.
  • I just had to look it up:
Beat the game on any difficulty level to unlock a new mode called Challenge Mode.
To unlock the original NES Contra title, complete at least four challenges in Challenge Mode.
To unlock the original NES Super C title, complete at least eight challenges in Challenge Mode.
To play as Probotector, clear at least twelve challenges in Challenge Mode.
  • I want to beat it on Easy because it unlocks the challenge mode. To beat it on Normal or Hard requires me to play through three more levels to unlock the bonus content.

The first part of level two (exploding zombies and falling dogs) is very challenging. The upward half of level two is super easy if you have the Hunter missiles. The boss is a pain because it takes forever to kill him with the basic gun and he always nails me at least once with his tail.

Level three is a cake walk, I never die on that level. The boss is super easy even with the basic rifle.

Level four can be tricky. I have yet to kill that monster on the rocket without getting killed at least once. Even with a good weapon I die. I try to beat it by sliding below its attack and shooting but once I reach bottom and he is not dead I ALWAYS get killed climbing up. The level four boss is super easy to beat.

Level five always gets me because I try for the powerups and get hit by flying bullets. I have only played level 5 a few times and I know if I keep at it I will pass the level.
