Half life 2 mods: What's your favorite?

edited November 2007 in Video Games
I was checking out all the mods for Half Life 2 last weekend and came across "the Hidden". It's a 10 player multi player game in which 9 of you are soldiers with machine guns or what not and 1 of you is "the hidden". The goal is for the soldiers to kill the hidden, and the hidden to kill the soldiers. The hidden is invisible and is armed with a knife and 3 grenades. He is faster than the soldiers and is also stronger as he can pounce quickly in a direction, cling onto walls or ceilings and throw objects at the soldiers taking them out that way.

This game has been so fun! It's like playing a thriller movie similar to predator. Most of the soldiers will huddle up looking around in all directions, looking around. Once in a while, one of the soldiers will go off on his own and you'll hear him die. So everyone goes running to find his body laying there or being tossed around by the hidden. One of them will see the blur the hidden makes, and start spraying bullets while everyone else joins in. It's pretty fun just to watch from spectator mode.

I played Battlegrounds, the revolutionary war mod. It was fun for a while, but relies too much on luck due to the inaccuracy of the weapons.

  • This sounds like a good mod, I'll get it when I get home.
  • The only mod I have a significant amount of experiene with is Insurgency: Modern Combat. It's pretty decent, however I much prefer the Project Reality mod for Battlefield 2. PR takes vanilla BF2 and basically turns it into the most realistic mod out there. No crosshairs, bleeding to death without medical attention, realistic vehicles, and limited number of non-standard weapons (one or two snipers per team, a few AT rockets, ect). Teamwork is key and without it, you will be crushed. The learning curve is extremely high, but I find that this is beneficial because it keeps kids with short attention spans out of most servers

It has a mode called insurgency in which the allies have to search a city for weapons caches to destroy them. The insurgents are weakly armed and don't have as many options when it comes to leadership classes, however they do have mobile spawn cars and cars with explosives in them in order to carry out suicide runs (i.e drive your car filled with explosives into the British APC). There is a lot more, but it would be dificult to explain in a single post and still keep it reasonable length.
  • Insurgency sounds neat, but I think it needs some NPC people walking around. Otherwise you know everyone you see is an enemy.

Wow, that would be cool to see in a multiplayer game. It would also be great if a game was more accurate on damage to the player. Such as, when you're hit in the arm, your accuracy goes down, a shot to the body (depending on the slug) would knock you down, and kill you within a certain amount of time, a leg hit significantly decreases your mobility, ect.

Project reality addresses some of these issues. For one, on the insurgency team there is a civilian class. They don't have any weapons but they have binoculars, grappling hooks, bandages (for healing team mates), and rocks they can throw (which do little to no damage). However, the British team cannot kill these civilians without taking a penalty in tickets (if you have 0 tickets, you lost; just like BF2). Also, you can do localized damage to vehicles. If you shoot an RPG at tank treads, you can immobilize the tank. Another thing is that if you are hit and start bleeding, if you don't get medical attention quick, you're vision will start to blur and your speed slows down significantly. Little things like these add a lot to the game.
