I know that worst video game stuff isn't till tonight, but i feel that i should just get this out of the way. When I was about seven or eight I wanted to get my first video game console, and the choices at the time were the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis as far as I knew (I was very uninformed about games at this time). So I'd been telling my parents, who knew even less about video games then I did, that I wanted either system, either the genesis to play sonic games or the Snes to play Mario games. So some time later for my birthday, I wake up and go downstairs and find that my parents had indeed bought me a system.
It was the Sega Saturn.
My parents, who I hold no grudge against for this since they were just trying there best, had bought it for me because it was the newest thing on the market. It took me a while to realize that i couldn't play either of the games that I wanted (except for some sonic stuff, but that came later). I was kinda disappointed, but I was happy that my parents had bought me something to play. I had a few games to play, but I was too young to really know what was good so i would basically play gamer Russian roulette at the local blockbuster and rent some games for it every now and then.
My parents noticed that I was a little disappointed by the fact that I couldn't play much on the new system they had bought for me, so some time later they decided to get me another gaming item to try to cheer me up. What they got for me was something that had a sonic game for it. It was a handheld system. It was the Sega Game Gear. So in short, the first two systems that I had were the Sega Saturn and the Sega Genesis. Truly my start as a gamer was a sad one.
The SEGA Saturn was awesome. In Japan. To this day there are a bunch of SEGA Saturn games I am dying to play, but can't. More on this in tonight's episode.
I've never listened to a Tuesday show— do you only talk about electronic gaming, or do you go over stuff like board games? I'd be interested to hear a few German board games to avoid, haha. Buuut you guys are probably already recording at this point, so scratch that.
And if we're throwing in general 'worsts,' I think it's pretty safe to say that Megatokyo is hands-down the worst "mainstream" webcomic out there. Between the art that manages to only get worse over time, the storyline that never advanced in the two years that I read the comic, the comic creator who never updates despite doing it full-time, and then there's the whole Rodney Caston-thing that I won't get into... it's pretty much a miserable piece of work. Anyone who knows me well enough knows how physically angry I get around bookstore Megatokyo displays. I could get into more webcomic drama, but I don't wanna say anything publicly that could bite me in the ass later on. >_>
I don't know much about anything else in-depth enough to feel safe about voicing an opinion. Mmmuhm, anime. Tenchi in Tokyo was crap. Earthian ruined my childhood. No matter what Rym says, the Utena movie was a hour and a half long animated art book with zero substance and pretty much scrapped any chance of my watching the actual show unless he physically sits me down and forces me to watch it. Sorry, man! XD
I'm not saying that the Saturn was bad, just that it wasn't something that an eight year old kid should have as his first console because it wasn't easy for me to find good games for it. If memory serves, I had two of the Bug! games, some sonic collections, Virtua Fighter, Mega Man 7, and I remember that i played some awesome robot fighter game of my friends once or twice. I don't remember the title, but i do remember laughing about the fact that one of the robots name was "Dorkus".
The Saturn was great in South Korea, too. Oh, the memories!
I was living in South Korea from '98-'99 and I bought the US version of the Sega Saturn on clearance. While I was there the South Korean black market for Saturn games was awesome. The games were plentiful, I think because the Saturn was still popular in Japan so tons of titles were available to the South Korean bootleggers. The Playstation was taking over in popularity so the bootleggers at the electronics market in Seoul were clearancing out their already cheap Saturn roms. I got tons of great Saturn games like Thunder Force 5 and the 2 cd Super Dimension Fortress Macross game (that was eventually ported over to Playstation) for 3,000 won each. The conversion rate at the time was sweet-as high as 1,600 won to the US dollar.
I had my Saturn modded there and accessories were plentiful. I got the 4mb cart and you know what that meant! X-Men vs Street Fighter baby! The Saturn version kicked ass!
I used to have a Sega CD; very technically, I STILL have it, but I haven't played it in years.
That was home to some of the worst games I've ever played, and indeed, what must've been some of the worst games in history. Anyone esle remember Sewer Shark, the game that came with it? Terrible.
I think the 32X was even worse than the Sega CD. I rented both the 32x and the Sega CD from a video game store once. I think the only game I liked for Sega CD was the Star Wars one. X-Wing I think?
...but while Sega had the worst add-ons, the Turbografx-16 was probably the worst console ever in terms of available games. I was sort of in ninjaned's position in regards to the Turbografx. I didn't know much about video games (I never had an NES) and I guess that's why I totally bought into the hype that the T16 was better than the Genesis. My dad bought me a T16 in '89 after I asked him not to get me a Genesis. Damn! I wish I would have told him to get me a Genesis instead.
Maybe I've said this already, but the worst console I've had is the game gear, along with it's games. It took 10 AA batteries, had 5 hours of battery life, and the only game I ever found worth buying was Sonic. It was like a fucking SUV.
Wow. You guys thought along the same lines we did when we did the show (which I'm doing post-production on this minute). ^_~
This time, we only covered the worst of video game consoles, but we're going to certainly have one for board games, roleplaying games, and all that. We tend to flip between board games and video games depending on what we're playing at the moment. We also have a huge backlog of both for the days when there's nothing new about.
We do talk about all types of games on Tuesday, but right now we're doing video games. We'll be back to board games in a two weeks or so. It's pretty random.
Megatokyo might seem bad, but not in the grand scheme. When you compare it to the thousands of absolute shit webcomics out there, it's pretty good.
The Utena movie was a moving artbook, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the show. Ok, it has the same characters, but really that's it. Comparing the Utena movie to the Utena TV show is like comparing the Akira movie to the Akira manga or Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone complex to the GitS manga. While all of those are good things, you see how they are vastly different. Pretend the naked cars of the Utena movie don't exist and watch the show.
Dorkas, that was Virtual On. Virtual On is one of the best robot games ever. The arcade game is super awesome. I highly recommend Virtual On to everybody.

Damn, we forgot to talk about the T16 in the episode, but that's ok. It wasn't nearly as bad as the other systems we talked about. I like Bonk a lot, but he's definitely no sonic. Supposedly all the good T16 games will be available in the Wii Virtual Console. Hooray. My favorite T16 games were this one racing game where you walked around town challenging guys and also R-Type.
Actually, NEC held a big event at the mall next to my house to promote the T16. I got a free VHS tape that is just a long advertisement for the system and its many games. One day I'll digitize it and throw it up on youtube or something.
Hey. To its credit, the GameGear had some awesomeness to it. Crystal Warriors and Dragon Crystal were good games. Granted, it still made the list, but not for technological reasons.
You've got us pegged as far as the list goes, though.
The only thing that comes up when I think of the game gear is bad memories. Like Ninjaned, my parents got me the game gear with good intentions, thinking that a backlight and heavier handheld would do more good. It wasn't the case. I remember playing it on occasion. It wasn't a system I played more than 10 times. I think I still might have it.
Oh yeah, I turned it on and the batteries exploded, it was sooo old. And they were new batteries from a day before I used it.
Scott— Naw, I wasn't referring to all that keenspot shit you can find a dime a dozen. I was talking about the comics online that have respected names and have become legitimate businesses. The difference between Megatokyo and Adventure Fun Time With Megaman in 8-Bit Color is that the former is someone's full-time job and has 4 physically published, widely distributed volumes out. I have other crap-comics that I hate that are also semi-businesses, but I personally know the creators of most of those. So they don't get to be mentioned.
And it looks like the next time I visit, I'm going to be getting sat down for Utena 101 by Rym. Should I be excited? We can never be sure.
Heh heh.. I note my avatar here. Utena and Captain Tylor are to this day my favourite shows ever, the awesome of Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Trigun, and Evangelion notwithstanding.
As for MegaTokyo, I'm surprised sometimes that I still read it. Webcomics seem to gain momentum over time: the longer I read one, the longer I'll continue to read it no matter what happens. Take Real Life. I really don't enjoy it much anymore, but I'll probably keep reading it until it dies. Scott and I clicked our links to BBOCS daily for months after THE SITE WENT DOWN.
There's also the fact that they stole Mosh Mosh Revolution from us, but that's another issue altogether. ^_~
I have about 10 Webcomics that I still visit every day despite the site being dead and buried. Actually, one of them came back up after a year of it being down and I didn't even notice despite going to it every day, because it didn't update. And still hasn't. I like Megatokyo. The art is nice, and the story and characters are more developed than lots of things around and popular.
Although I'm still reading Megatokyo, I have to agree with both Aido and Rym's comments. Megatokyo's story is developing so extremely slowly: each chapter, and there's been only 7 or so, is a single day. So in all the years that its run, you've only got a short burst of a developing plot, but I'm hooked by the weight of how long I've read.
Edit: I loved Virtual On! I wish that was still around, the controls in that game were great in the arcade.
Virtual On arcade machines are not hard to find. But finding ones that aren't broken can sometimes be a little difficult. I love how the arcade machines had this piece of plastic so you couldn't see the other player's screen.
The worst anime. Hm. This is actually going to take some thinking since I have seen so much. Let me see what I can remember off the top of my head. Please note my list is broken up into two sections. One contains shows in which I could find no redeeming quality. They are in fact the worst shows and should never be watched by anyone. The second list are shows that had a part to them that was just SO BAD that it defies explanation (ex. generic to extreme, horrible ending, things that just don't work and make it unwatchable).

Now, I saw Pretear a LONG time ago, but I recall enjoying it while I was watching it. I'll admit that I've watched lots of stuff since, and really can't remember it at all, but it was recently released here. As a result, my friend who buys (nearly) the entire madman catalogue each month has got the DVDs, which I will borrow, as soon as somebody else finishes with them. We shall see if I enjoy it this time around.
What I do recall was a single girl with 90 hundred men, 2 of whom I thought were women until I read an internet site saying they were all male (The DVD I was watching was from Japan. Nothing I understood except the subs. I would be able to hear their gender in speech now that I know some Japanese). there was also something about leafe, and a nasty woman eating it all, and monsters coming up all around the place... Hmm... It's starting to sound pretty crappy now... well, I shall see.

Sonic was a much better mascot than Bonk.

Well these are all I can remember at this time. Can't wait for tonight's show.
Tactical Roar, Air Gear: I've seen worse. These are typically bad, but not especially bad.
Legend of Lemnear: Right there with you.
The coolest episode of Noir was, I think, the 4th one, with the blackout fight in the casino. But yeah, it totally went downhill.
Worst to marathon: Gasaraki. Great show, awesome show, but dear god, you cannot watch it all in one go.
Personally, I think Naruto was the biggest let-down. It stood a chance to be awesome, but then turned into a fighting show.
And now, I wonder, how would people rank Lensman. It was terrible, but was it the WORST?
EDIT: Adjusted for inflation, isn't the Neo-Geo the most expensive system ever?
What I do recall was a single girl with 90 hundred men, 2 of whom I thought were women until I read an internet site saying they were all male (The DVD I was watching was from Japan. The best example I can think of off-hand is Haruna from the third Tenchi Muyo movie.
