Is it really? Did we invent the Fibonacci sequence or was it always there, waiting to be discovered? Were there no right triangles before Pythagoras? Did we invent base 10 arithmetic or is it a basic foundation of universal truth?

Mathematics is a human language used to describe these universal truths.

I don't know why but that reminded of an argument about non conformist food. It was probably in my dream last night. Sounds yummy.
SMART boardsare used in almost every classroom in my area because the Ohio education department hands out technology money like candy. My wife is a teacher and incorporates video, graphs, presentations, etc. into just about every lesson. The kids are also required to work on the board as part of class, and multiple assignments through the year require students to make their own presentations.
Those are cool. I didn't see them until I started college.

Yay, an invention from my neck of the woods! My mother has actually worked for SMART Technologies for several years now fairly high up in their editing department. I had a couple temporary summer/fall jobs there doing some small things, too. Stuffing product binders, mostly, but I also did a short stint editing and make some lesson activities for really young kids (grades 1-4) to do on the boards, which was quite fun. ^^
But yes, while a great invention, probably not THE greatest. I'm not sure what I would put at the greatest invention, myself. Um... Huh. I could get behind fire, but I guess that was more of a discovery, like others have already said.
This is my answer as well. Mathematics and literacy are great but they would be relegated to only the very rich or powerful without the printing press.
*Shrugs* I have no idea. I think dildos are hilarious, so I searched it up in Google Image, saw that, and I figured it's about two steps above regular dildos.
The fact that you can say 'dildo' and most people know what it means makes it a real word in my book. In fact, I am adding it to my Firefox dictionary as I type this post.

The earliest group of literate people were likely middle-class.

Oh, how do you do that? Add it to your Firefox dictionary, I mean. There's a lot of words I use that I made up but use constantly.

Thane wins the thread.
I also put animation, film and soap.

Oh wait! How about podcasts?
WTF?! Why would you need a USB for that device?! What's the point of that if it was real.
BTW, 'dildo' is apparently not a word.
