Flip or Candy Bar phone?

edited January 2008 in Technology
My friend came home from Japan for the holidays, and showed me his Samsung candy-bar phone. It was very similar to this one. It's only 7mm thick!!!! I've always liked flip phones, but after seeing his I want it. Badly. The problem is that Samsung does not make one this thin that works on GSM 850. That's the only GSM coverage we have here.

His phone was the first phone I've ever seen that really slipped ever so perfectly in the pocket. It even wasn't bad at all to hold, which is my biggest complaint against the Moto RZR.

So my question.... why do Americans vastly prefer flip phones while Europeans and Asians are partial to candy bar phones?

Which is better and why?

This phone isn't nearly as thin, but it's pure Asian sweetness.

I've never cared much about phones, but now I'm on a quest. I like the KRZR a lot. But now I'm leaning toward a candy bar phone.

I'm also seriously thinking about getting an unlocked GSM phone so I'm not beholden to any major carrier. It's probably not a great move financially, but I like the idea of being able to take my phone wherever I want to with no contract holding me back.

  • Candy bar phones > Flip phone. Why? Because I hate how flip phones look, especially when they are flipped open. And you forgot the most awesomenest of them all. Slide phones.
  • Hamburger phones are TOTALLY BOSS!

    Go see Juno.
  • Candy bar phones are what they're called? I like 'em too because you can put different covers on them.. but I don't like thin ones because I am far too rough with my things.
  • And you forgot the most awesomenest of them all. Slide phones.
I've always worried that these were too fragile.
  • I love my Chocolate, it is the awesomeness.

Just as fragile as a flip phone. Heck, I think it's easier to break a flip phone than a slide phone. Flip phones are only connected by a single plastic hinge. And a few small cables.
  • What are the slider phones connected by?

Whatever the outcome, the candy bar still wins over both the flip phone (the "clam") and the slider. That said, I own a Motorola flip phone. XD
  • I have a candy-bar phone that flips open for the full keyboard, and it's never served me poorly.
  • I use a Sanyo RL-4930 candybar phone. I've dropped this baby twelve feet onto concrete and nothing happened to it. :)
  • I prefer the candy bar phones. Flip phones are way too delicate for my roughness.
  • I like how flip phones become smaller when you fold them, so they take up less room in the pocket. I also like how they have the external mini-screen which allows me to go without wearing a wristwatch. However, I think if I switch to a more powerful smart phone type device, that flippage is out of the question.
  • While flip phones are more delicate, every candy bar phone that I have owned has invariably turned on when I'm in the theater. I just like the fact that the buttons are hidden when the flip phones are closed, thus avoiding unwanted actions. I really don't care about how the phone looks, and I'm paranoid about ALL electronics, regardless of how delicate they actually are.

The problem for me isn't length of pocket, but rather thickness of pocket. I've yet to see a phone that fits nicely in a shirt pocket until I saw the Samsung SGH-X820. Not that I'd carry it in my shirt often, but it also slides into the pants pocket just perfectly.

I've always hated carrying my phone. I don't even wear a watch. With a phone 7mm thin, I didn't even notice it. And that's why I fell in love with it. Now if only the Samsung A727 didn't suck. It's only slightly thicker, but gets terrible reviews.

  • I like the candy-bar style, for purely aesthetic reasons. It's hard to make an argument for either that is not based on aesthetic preferences.
  • I prefer flip. If I drop or scratch a flip phone, basically nothing happens. If I drop or scratch a candy bar phone, it's more likely to damage part of the phone I actually need to use. It's true that the hinge of a flip phone can get damaged, but I like buying sturdier phones, so it's not reallly an issue.
  • I like whatever phone Verizon gives me for free, way back when it was a candy-bar, now it's a flip. It's my opinion that a phone is for making phone calls. As long as it will fit in my pocket it's good.
  • Verizon
Who are you, and what are you doing on the Internet?
  • I never really liked Candy-bar phones. Flip phones are much more resistant to accidental button-pressing, accidental screen scratching, accidental shattering, etc.
  • Only a flip phone is convincing enough to do the Star Trek communicator gag.
  • Just don't get the razr. The os on it is so slow. When you're scrolling through the menu, it takes 10 seconds to before it reconizes each button push.

It also breaks very easily and the buttons stick.
